Justin Bieber Preps 'Never Say Never' Soundtrack, Hits Studio With 'Firework' Songwriter Ester Dean

With his much-anticipated film debut, 'Never Say Never,' due to hit the big screen on Feb. 11, multiplatinum music phenom Justin Bieber is putting the finishing touches on the movie's soundtrack. One high-profile songwriter who has wrapped up studio time with the teen superstar is Ester Dean, the Grammy-nominated talent behind hits by Rihanna ('Rude Boy,' 'What's My Name?'), Usher ('Hot Tottie') and Katy Perry ('Firework').

According to Dean, the in-demand Bieber -- who has become a pop culture behemoth, selling over 3 million copies of his debut album 'My World' and over 1 million of the release's extended edition, 'My World 2.0' -- took her by surprise with his humble demeanor. "I first met Justin with Usher at an 'American Idol' event," Dean told PopEater. "He was like, 'Oh my God ... I'm such a fan of your songwriting!' And I'm like, 'You're a fan? [laughs] I'm a fan of your music!'"

While some of Dean's longtime followers may be surprised at the pairing, the genre-jumping artist, who has also become a force in the R&B world drafting hits for Chris Brown, Robin Thicke and Tre Songz, sees no cultural differences when it comes to creating songs. "He's a very talented guy. He was very easy to work with and was very nice," she said. "We just finished up some music for the new movie he has coming out. I can't get too much into it. I don't want to give too much away. [Laughs] But it's going to be great."

"I've worked on all different types of music," Dean said of her diverse resume. "Take Katy Perry ... I've been wanting to collaborate with her since I heard 'I Kissed A Girl.' And I found out later that Katy wanted to work with me! So we did 'Firework' and 'Peacock' and wrote the lyrics together on both songs."

"Katy knew what she wanted. She already had the ideas in her head," Dean continued. "When an artist already has their thoughts for a song together, you only have to help them drive that car. It makes the process much easier. You are basically holding the map, but you still let them drive the car. Katy and I were coming up with some crazy lines like, 'Life is like a plastic bag, just let it go...' It was fun, but I didn't know 'Firework' would take off like it has."

Dean says her collaborations with pop acts like Bieber and Perry can only help end musical divisions. She points to her recent work with Mary J. Blige and Britney Spears, two acts that work at opposite ends of the music spectrum, yet have more in common than some would let on.

"Music is music. People need to get that into their heads," Dean said. "We should get past the segregation of music. If something makes you feel good, dance or want to make love, it could be anyone from John Mayer to R. Kelly. The music has nothing against you. It just wants to be heard."

Madonna's Brother on Her 24-Year-Old Beau: 'Creepy'

Madonna's brother Christopher Ciccone is a little weirded out by his sister's taste for younger men.

"I guess if she continues to date all these much younger guys, it could start to look creepy," Christopher tells RadarOnline.com, referencing Madonna's new 24-year-old French beau Brahim Zaibat.

Radar previously reported that Madonna, who turned 52 last August, is eight years older than Zaibat's mother. Before Zaibat, Madonna was linked to 24-year-old Brazilian model Jesus Luiz.

"She certainly isn't following societal values, but then again my sister never has and probably never will either," Christopher says.

Madge and Christopher haven't spoken in three years, since he published the tell-all book 'Life With My Sister Madonna.'

"I think that a lot of Madonna's emotional needs are met by taking care of her children; these boyfriends must really be like a kind of distraction for her," Christopher says. Madonna has four kids.

Madonna's former husband of eight years, Guy Ritchie, was a decade her junior.

Did Regis Philbin Quit Over a Pay Cut Dispute?

There's a new twist in the surprise departure of Regis Philbin from 'Live With Regis and Kelly,' and as you'd expect, it centers around money. Loads of money. Regis fired his longtime manager, Jim Griffin, right after telling viewers he was quitting, and sources say he made the move because he was insulted by a proposed pay cut.

According to TMZ sources, Regis makes between $18 and $20 million a year. I'm told it's a bit less than that, but regardless, an insider tells me that's "more than double" what Kelly Ripa receives. ABC producers wanted an adjustment for Regis' new contract, and Jim Griffin went to work on negotiations.

"Regis was insulted by the offer he got and chose to leave, blaming his agent on his way out," a television exec tells me. "The problem is the world has changed around this legend. Regis thinks he's being pushed out for someone they can pay peanuts to. The problem is if he thinks he's going to get anywhere near that sort of money doing another show he should think again."

Regis, 79, announced the news on last Tuesday's episode of the hit show, saying that he will leave the program sometime in late summer.

He apparently told Kelly about his decision 15 minutes before they went on air. While initially she was said to be stunned, she is now apparently furious and feels he showed a total lack of respect for her.

An insider with knowledge of the situation tells me that ABC wanted to retain Regis but also felt that Kelly had proven during his medical leaves and frequent days off that she could thrive without him.

"The writing was on the wall when Regis got sick and the show's ratings did not decline," my source says. "When it came time to renegotiate his contract again, the producers knew the show would survive with or without him and offered him way less than the multimillions he had become accustomed to."

Regis has said he's not quitting television, just the show he's helmed since 1983. ABC will announce his replacement in the coming months.

I was at ABC studios in New York just hours after Regis made his announcement and an executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity told me that producers have been "unofficially testing" out possible replacements for a while, but that they haven't necessarily found Kelly's partner yet.

"The show can definitely survive without Regis if they find Kelly the right new co-host," an ABC exec tells me. "For some time they have been unofficially testing out potential replacements on the show. Neil Patrick Harris, Anderson Cooper and even Kelly's husband, Mark, have filled in; yet no one was as good as Regis."

James Cameron Spills Schedule for 'Avatar' Sequels

James Cameron's 'Avatar' sequels may hit theaters by Christmas of 2014 and 2015, the director tells Entertainment Weekly.

"I am in the process of writing the next two 'Avatar' films now," Cameron says. "We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas '14 and '15 is the current plan."

EW notes the release dates should be treated as strictly tentative, referencing the initial film's pushed-back release date. More on the sequels after the jump.

Cameron says the trilogy will continue with characters from the first 'Avatar.' "Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form."

More good news is that a percentage of the 'Avatar' sequels' profits will benefit the environment. "Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world," Cameron says. "I didn't want to make more 'Avatar' movies without a grander plan in place."

'Avatar' star Sam Worthington hyped the sequels to Moviefone recently, speculating on the plot: "I always joked and said that they were married, and Jake Sully got lazy, and Neytiri kicked his butt," Worthington said. "But there is something to [the notion of being] in a genetically-engineered body now, which he is. Is there a 'use by' date on it? I don't know. What's the new dilemma? Is it just humans coming back, or is something even bigger than can threaten them, threaten the world?"

First Look at Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me' Video

Britney Spears is such a tease. The pop princess has been busy filming her 'Hold It Against Me' music video and tweeted the following photo, showing her dressed in a red metallic suit surrounded by microphones. "Day 2 is a wrap! #HIAM video coming soon...." she wrote on Twitter.

Over the weekend, choreographer Brian Friedman praised Spears and her dancers after shooting wrapped for the day. "Good luck to @britneyspears and all of my incredible dancers," he wrote. "You all have surpassed my expectations and I am so thankful for your hard work!"

"What a fabulous day on set of HIAM! @britneyspears killed it! She danced her ass off! Great work 2 my dancers too... Y'all slayed!" Friedman continued.

The video is being directed by Jonas Akerlund, who famously directed the video for Lady Gaga's 'Telephone' featuring Beyonce.

'Hold It Against Me' is the first single from Britney's new album, which is expected to be released in March. The tune ruled iTunes charts in at least 16 countries, and is already sitting at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart after selling more than 411,000 downloads in its first week.

Oprah Winfrey Reveals Surprise Half-Sister

Oprah Winfrey's big family secret? The talk-show queen announced on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' Monday that she has discovered a half-sister, named Patricia, who was secretly given up for adoption in 1963. Patricia, who lives in Milwaukee, said that she discovered Oprah was her half-sister while searching for her birth mother in 2007. She spent the next three years trying to contact Winfrey with the news and finally reached her late last year. They met on Thanksgiving Day.

Winfrey was 9 and living with her father, Vernon Winfrey, in 1963 and said she had no idea her mother, Vernita Lee, was even pregnant. According to Winfrey, her mother could not afford to keep Patricia.

In a confusing twist, Winfrey's previously known half-sister, who passed away in 2003, was also named Patricia and lived in Milwaukee. Oprah said that her mom did not name the daughter she gave away and that it was just a coincidence.

Patricia is believed to be 48 and has two adult children, a son and a daughter, meaning Winfrey has a niece and nephew to add to the family as well. Patricia said that she continued her quest to contact Winfrey so her children could know their aunt.

Winfrey praised her half-sister for not going to the press with the story.

It's been a revelatory year for Oprah Winfrey, who, as her legendary talk show winds down its 25th and final year on the air, has stepped out of her comfort zone to address a number of rumors about herself, including talk that her friendship with Gayle King is actually a romantic relationship and her thoughts of suicide as a teenager after she learned of an unwanted pregnancy.

"I was given some news that literally shook me to my core. This time, I'm the one being reunited," Winfrey said in advertisements for today's episode of 'Oprah.' "I was keeping a family secret for months, and on Monday you're going to hear it straight from me."

Earlier Monday, BlackVoices.com reported that Winfrey learned sometime around Thanksgiving of last year that her mother had another daughter. Winfrey, 56, believed for years that she was her parents' only surviving child after her two younger siblings, Jeffrey and Patricia, passed away.

As soon as Winfrey announced that she would reveal "news that literally shook me to my core" about "a family secret," the Internet lit up with speculation. "There has been speculation in the past that Vernon Winfrey is not her biological father," In Touch Weekly Senior Editor Amy Palmer told CBS News, "so this is something people are saying it could be."

Others -- including Kitty Kelley, who famously wrote an unauthorized biography of Winfrey last year -- had been correctly claiming that Winfrey would reveal a long-lost family member.

Elisabetta Canalis Learns on CNN She'll Never Be Mrs. Clooney

When George Clooney sat down for an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan, he made it clear to the world that he doesn't want to get married again. Too bad he forgot to mention this to longtime girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis.

"I hate to blow your whole news story, but I was married," George told 'Piers Morgan Tonight' on Friday. "Yeah, so I've proven how good I was at it, and I just ... I'm allowed one," the 48-year-old actor-philanthropist said referring to his marriage to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993.

"Elisabetta had no idea he was going to say that," a friend of the Italian beauty tells me. "She thought she was going to be the girl who would finally get George to settle down and put a ring on it. She was totally surprised."

Even the star's dad, Nick, who was in the same interview, seemed surprised by his son's answer on plans to walk down the aisle again, telling George, "I want you to think about that. I want you to think about ... we've been married ... Nina [George's mom] and I've been married 51 years."

However, friends tell me despite what George might say in public, Elisabetta won't take no for an answer. "If he doesn't ask her to marry him soon she will ask him," an insider tells me. "And if he says no, well there are plenty more fish in the ocean."

Good look finding another fish that looks like George!

Elizabeth Olsen Makes Her Sundance Debut

When one mentions an "Olsen," people immediately assume it's either Mary-Kate or Ashley. But it's the famous twins' younger sister, Elizabeth Olsen, who's making headlines now.

Olsen, 21, is currently taking time off from her studies at NYU, and is promoting not one, but two films at the Sundance Film Festival, according to the Huffington Post.

She gets her first glimpse of the spotlight in 'Martha Marcy May Marlene,' where she plays a young woman trying to reclaim her identity after escaping a cult. And Olsen, who, according to the Internet Movie Database, hasn't had a film role since 'The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley,' understands the importance of her new role.

"It's hard for independent films when they want to get money," Olsen told the Huffington Post. "And to have a lead be an unknown -- it's kind of a risk for people to take. And so the fact that they took that risk was like made my year, my life ... It was really exciting."

Her other film, 'Silent House,' is a unique one, especially for someone with a theater background. It's one continous shot following Olsen's character as she begins to suspect her house is haunted.

"When I was auditioning, I was like, 'Just so you know I'm used to the medium of theater, so like I can stand on my feet for this long,'" she said.

Olsen may come from a theater background, but she's no stranger to movie sets -- or paparazzi. The lenses, however, are usually focused on her 24-year-old sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley, who have been on camera since they were infants on 'Full House.'

"I just think it's crazy in general, but I want to be an actor –- and I have since I was a little girl –- and if that happens, then you figure out how to deal with it where it doesn't completely infringe upon your life," Olsen said. "I haven't experienced that personally yet. Hopefully I don't have to but I think it's a really weird part of this business."

Kelly Preston: Baby Ben 'Identical' to Dad

John Travolta and Kelly Preston have a noisey household these days, and they have their new baby boy to thank for it.

The couple welcomed their bundle of joy, Benjamin Hunter Kaleo Travolta, last November, and has Travolta warming up his singing voice "all the time."

"I make up songs," Travolta told Us Weekly. "I was changing him the other day, and I wanted to entertain him so he didn't get upset, so I made something up."

Preston, who graced the cover of Hello! magazine earlier this month with Travolta and baby Ben, revealed the new addition to the family looks "identical" to his dad.

"Maybe there's me somewhere in there, but he looks so much like his daddy," she said.

And how is Ella Blue, 10, dealing with her new job as big sister?

"Ella loves Benjamin," Travolta said. "She just can't stop loving him."

Preston has been open about her pregnancy and how it helped her family. She recently stopped by the 'Today' show to discuss how Benjamin has helped her family heal from from the loss of son Jett to a seizure in 2009.

"It's been wonderfully healing," Preston told NBC's Natalie Morales. "Of course, you know, we still -- it's still every day. But it's been, I think, a really nice gift for a lot of people throughout the world. We've gotten the most beautiful letters. And the most beautiful notes of happiness."

Kevin Smith Slams Bruce Willis in Interview

Director Kevin Smith has an opinion of Bruce Willis, and he's not holding back.

According to the Daily Mail, Smith recently went on the 'WTF with Marc Maron' podcast and slammed Willis' committment and attitude while shooting 2010's 'Cop Out,' which Smith directed.

Smith claims the actor neglected to promote the film, contributing to the movie's lackluster performance in theaters. 'Cop Out' grossed just $44 million in North America.

"It was difficult," Smith said. "I've never been involved in a situation like that where one component is not in the box at all. It was f***ing soul crushing."

The director continued on his rant, adding that Willis was difficult on set and refused to pose for promotional photos.

"I had no f***ing help from this dude whatsoever," Smith said.

Though Willis wasn't on his best behavior while shooting 'Cop Out,' the opposite can be said about his co-star Tracy Morgan, according to Smith.

"He's a f***ing dream," Smith said of the '30 Rock' actor. "Tracy Morgan, I would lay down in traffic for. Were it not for Tracy, I might've killed myself or someone else in the making of that movie."

England Fight to Keep Series Alive

The Big Picture
Australia Day would be the perfect occasion for the home side to wrap up the one-day series, but for the sake of the remaining contests an England victory is what's really needed. The visitors have played some poor cricket, especially in the last two matches, with the batting faring badly. A defeat here and the plane home won't be able to come soon enough.

That, though, won't be any concern of Australia's. They desperately needed to regain some belief following the Ashes and with coloured clothes back on they are beginning to hit their stride. England haven't forced them to play at their best, but even with injuries they are building up a head of steam. David Hussey was the star at the SCG as he showed his finishing skills, which will be valuable at the World Cup, but Brett Lee took the Man-of-the-Match award and he has led the attack superbly.

England's bowlers have actually performed a decent role, considering that it has been a second string attack, and the likes of Ajmal Shahzad, Chris Tremlett and Chris Woakes show the depth available. But somewhere in the transition from Tests to one-dayers key batsmen have lost the skill to convert starts into big innings.

It's a feeling of déjà vu as far as both sides are concerned. In the aftermath of the 2009 Ashes, also won by England, the one-day series was a horribly lop-sided affair as Australia cruised to a 6-1 drubbing. If the hosts continue their winning streak in Adelaide, it's very easy to see this series going the same way.

Watch out for...
James Anderson was given a break after the Ashes but following 10 days at home with his new baby has returned to the tour in the nick of time. Although England's quicks have performed an admirable role, Anderson's experience of 133 matches will be a valuable addition. He's got fond memories of Adelaide after his impact during the Test match when he helped reduce Australia to 3 for 2 on the first morning and is a dangerous operator with the new white ball.

Cameron White has played a couple of valuable innings in this series; his 25 at Melbourne helped Shane Watson complete victory and his 45 at Hobart began the first recovery. He'll want to make his decent form count in the remainder of this series because, even though his place is secure, there will be strong competition for batting places if Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey both recover. With his immense power White shouldn't have a problem clearing the square boundaries at the Adelaide Oval and against the spinners even the straight hits aren't out of reach.

Team news
Michael Clarke said no risks will be taken with any player before the World Cup so Shaun Tait (thigh) and Mitchell Johnson (throat infection) remain doubtful. It means Australia could field the same attack that did an impressive job in Sydney.

Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Cameron White, 6 David Hussey, 7 Steve Smith, 8 John Hastings, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Xavier Doherty, 10 Doug Bollinger

Kevin Pietersen is fit again following his groin strain and James Anderson is available, while Andy Flower confirmed Matt Prior will continue to open the batting despite his two ducks since returning to the side. Paul Collingwood would be the likeliest batsman to make way, but could be considered at No. 7 with Michael Yardy struggling to have impact with bat or ball.

England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Matt Prior (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Paul Collingwood, 8 James Tredwell, 9 Ajmal Shahzad, 10 Chris Tremlett, 11 James Anderson

Stats and trivia
  • Adelaide is the venue of England's highest one-day total in Australia when they reached 3 for 302 in the infamous match against Sri Lanka during 1998-99 where Muttiah Muralitharan was also called for throwing. England still lost.
  • James Anderson returns with a good one-day record in Australia. From 13 matches he has 21 wickets at 25.61, including a miserly 1 for 12 in 10 overs on this ground back in his debut series of 2002-03.
  • The teams have met five times at Adelaide, with Australia ahead 4-1. England's only win was the first encounter back in 1983.
Quotes
"We've played some exciting, positive cricket and I've enjoyed having the opportunity to lead the boys. I'd like to lead from the front with the bat and make some more runs, I'm well aware of that, but everyone is in good spirits and we believe there is a lot of room for improvement."
Michael Clarke

"It's not ideal, the start of this one-day series, but there are still four games to go. We intend to finish strongly, we are here to win these games, it's not just preparation for the World Cup."

Elliott and Blackwell Regain the Ashes for Australia

Australia hold the women's Ashes for the first time in six years after the debutant Sarah Elliott and the captain Alex Blackwell held their nerve to secure a seven-wicket victory. Elliott, the No.3, played the ideal anchor role with a committed 81 not out, while Blackwell increased her pace once she was set and finished with 74.

England controlled the first three days of the contest, but Australia's top order stood up to reach 3 for 198 at the end of a warm day at Bankstown Oval. Elliott and Blackwell delivered the match-winning stand of 125, which ultimately allowed Australia to lift the trophy they handed over to England way back in 2005.

Australia, who resumed at 1 for 29 on the final day, lost the opener Shelley Nitschke for 20 when she was lbw to Isa Guha in the morning. Nitschke had put on 46 with Elliott before she was joined by Blackwell for the game's crucial phase.

It was tough going before lunch, with only 48 runs added in the first session, but Elliott and Blackwell were able to lift the rate after the break. By tea they required 30 for victory and the only hiccup came when Blackwell was trapped in front by Katherine Brunt with the second new ball. Elliott, who struck one four in her 262-ball marathon, stayed until the end, hitting the winning run with a single to fine leg.

Australia stormed back into the game on the third day when Rene Farrell, the Player of the Match, captured 5 for 23 and helped dismiss the tourists for 149. The one-off Test victory follows England's 4-1 success in the Twenty20 series.

Injury Problems Send Graeme Swann Home

Graeme Swann has been forced out of the one-day series against Australia by injury as England's casualty list continues to grow. He picked up a knee problem during the first Twenty20 and has now suffered a back strain and will be returning to the UK to recover for next month's World Cup.

Swann played the second T20 and first one-day international in Melbourne but has missed the last two matches. It had been hoped he would be able to take part towards the end of the series, but a back spasm a couple of days ago added to his problems, leaving England another key bowler short as they aim to bounce back from 3-0 down.

"It's frustrating to return home from the tour early but the priority for me now is the World Cup and getting my body right so that I am able to play an important role for England throughout the tournament," Swann said. "I will be following the rest of the series and hope to see England put in some positive performances over the next fortnight. I've had the time of my life over here and bringing back the Ashes is something that will always stay with me."

Andy Flower, the England team director, said Swann would be taking the earliest flight home. "He's unfortunately got a strain in his lower back and that allied with his knee problem means it's best for him to go home and get ready for the World Cup now," Flower said.

It leaves England with Michael Yardy and James Tredwell to fill the spin roles for the remainder of the series but neither offer the attacking option of Swann and his absence has been felt during the middle overs.

"It's a big blow, he's an important part of our side," Flower said. "He's a world-class performer and full of confidence after the Ashes. But these things happen, we are coming towards the end of a long, hard tour and certainly the physical challenges are starting to take their toll."

Swann is the second player to fly home from the one-day series after Tim Bresnan picked up a calf strain in Hobart. England have not been able to field their first-choice attack at any stage in the limited-overs games due to Stuart Broad's absence and James Anderson being rested. Anderson, though, is available for the Adelaide match on Wednesday and will provide valuable experience as England aim to stay in the series.

Flower, meanwhile, has looked upon the loss of his main bowlers as a valuable chance to give experience to some younger and less experienced one-day players. One of the topics Flower has often mentioned is the need to have more than just a first eleven that is good enough because of the demanding international schedules.

"One of the areas I've been really happy with on this tour is the fact that some of our fringe players have come in and done very well," he said. "People like Bresnan in the Tests who did superbly, Tremlett the same. These guys stepped into the breach and I think we've seen Shahzad grow in the first three limited-overs games.

"I think they are great opportunities for some of our fringe players now. With the schedules we are given we are going to need a squad in which we can certainly rotate fast bowlers, because they are the ones at greatest risk of injury."

England's major issue has been a lack of consistency from the batsmen although Kevin Pietersen is fit again which will provide some extra power to the middle order. His replacement in Sydney, Paul Collingwood, continued to struggle with 1 and Flower admitted he was concerned but hinted at retaining him.

"Yes, of course we are. And he is," Flower said. "But we need him to be in form for the World Cup and again there's a good opportunity tomorrow for him to get that form."

Selectors Back Michael Clarke to Rediscover Form

Michael Clarke, the out-of-form one-day captain, will continue to receive the support of Australia's selectors at least until the end of the World Cup. While Clarke has been struggling for runs throughout the summer, Greg Chappell said the panel has been impressed with his leadership against England, who the hosts lead 3-0 in the seven-match series.

"We have a lot of reasons to support him at this time," Chappell said in the Sydney Morning Herald. ''We've been delighted with his leadership. His captaincy in the first three games has been excellent. His strategies, bowling changes, everything that he's done - not least winning matches - has been good, and I'm sure that will only be good for him.''

However, Clarke's batting is more of a problem, with him unable to exit the slump which worsened during the Ashes. He scored 193 runs in that campaign and has posted 36, 10 and 9 in the first three ODIs.

"Many wanted Mike Hussey out of the team, we decided to back his ability to perform at the top level and we were repaid in spades by his performances in the Ashes series," Chappell said in the Courier-Mail. "We are pretty confident that given the same opportunities Michael Clarke will repay us the same way. I believe he has got through to the end of the World Cup to sort it out and we are confident he well and truly will have it sorted before then."

Clarke, who is preparing for Wednesday's fourth ODI, said it was "nice" to hear Chappell's positive comments. "I've had a lot of support from a lot of people over the last couple of months and that helps," Clarke said. "A lot of people who support me don't have a story written about them. I know I've got a lot of supporters and fans out there who continue to get behind me. I'm confident that if I keep doing the hard work things will change."

Chappell told Clarke to believe in himself to correct the "state-of-mind" problem. "You can turn it around very quickly and for that reason I'm confident Michael only needs to get a few runs at some stage in the next few games and he'll go to India [for the World Cup] in a very different space than he's in now," he said. ''When you're not playing well you start to think about anything and everything and stop watching the ball. It's nearly as simple as that."

Tigers Trade Galarraga to D-Backs

The Detroit Tigers have traded right-handed pitcher Armando Galarraga to the Arizona Diamondbacks for right-hander Kevin Eichhorn and left-hander Ryan Robowski.

The trade was announced Monday.

Galarraga gained fame last season when umpire Jim Joyce acknowledged blowing a call with two outs in the ninth inning that cost him a perfect game.

He was 4-9 with a 4.49 ERA in 24 starts and one relief appearance last season in Detroit. He's 23-26 with a 4.58 ERA over four seasons with the Tigers and Texas Rangers.

Galarraga, who has a one-year contract for $2.3 million, became expendable when the Tigers signed Brad Penny.

"I talked to Armando and he was very thankful," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "He said he realized it was a business and he understood. It's a great opportunity for him. Arizona was real aggressive because they are looking for a starting pitcher. It's a good match for everybody involved."

Eichhorn was 5-6 in 15 minor league starts last season. Robowski was 2-4 in 35 relief games in the minors last year.

Dombrowski was satisfied with acquiring Eichhorn and Robowski in exchange for a player who wasn't going to be in Detroit's rotation.

"We look at both of the guys as sort of fringe-type prospects, not blue-chip guys, but guys we think can pitch at the big-league level," Dombrowski said.

Rangers Rally, Beat Caps in Shootout

The New York Rangers were being blanked by a rookie goaltender when Marian Gaborik put the puck in the net — and didn't even know it.

Then, once the game reached overtime, the result was seemingly inevitable.

Artem Anisimov scored the decisive goal in a shootout, backup goalie Martin Biron had 22 saves, and the Rangers rallied to defeat the Washington Capitals 2-1 Monday night.

Each team tallied twice in the shootout before Anisimov ended the duel by beating Braden Holtby, who was making his seventh career start.

The last time the teams met, on Dec. 12 in New York, the Rangers rolled to a 7-0 win. In this one, the Capitals cranked up the defense and took a 1-0 lead in the second period on a goal by Matt Hendricks.

Gaborik tied it for the injury-riddled Rangers with 6:41 left in regulation. Gaborik was in front of the net when Brian Boyle took a shot, and the rebound bounced off Gaborik and past Holtby.

"I felt it hit me and then I turned away and saw the guys celebrating," Gaborik said. "I didn't have any idea. I guess it was one of the lucky ones."

That's how the Capitals felt, too.

"It was a lucky bounce, a fluke goal on their part," Hendricks said.

And, it ended Holtby's bid for his first NHL shutout.

"The only goal that beat him was a goal that even the Rangers didn't know they scored," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said.

New York improved to 8-3 in games that extend beyond regulation. Washington lost its seventh consecutive overtime game and ninth in the last 10 despite outshooting the Rangers 6-1 in the extra five minutes.

"We haven't lost the overtime games because of lack of offense; it's because of poor defense," Boudreau said. "We talked about how we have to play in the overtime and we talked about it again on the bench. I thought we did a real good job of it."

Biron made several sensational saves in overtime, including one on a blast by Alex Ovechkin, who was held without a point.

"Tonight I thought he had two really good chances to score," Boudreau said. "Sometimes you get them. Some years they're all going in, and some years they're not going in. He's fighting for every goal he can get this year."

Holtby finished with 28 saves. In three games since his recall from Hershey of the American Hockey League last week, the 21-year-old has turned aside 77 of 80 shots.

In his first shootout, however, he fell for dekes by Wojtek Wolski and Mats Zuccarello before Anisimov scored the game-winner.

"NHL shootouts are a lot harder, obviously," Holtby said. "It's not something you get to practice because when they clean the ice it's a lot more slippery and you usually practice shootouts at the end of practice when it's all chewed up."

The focus was on defense during a scoreless first period in which the Rangers outshot Washington 7-5. Each team took only one shot over the first 11 minutes, and that included a Capitals power play in which Biron was not required to make a save.

At 1:27 of the second period, Hendricks scored from the left side of the net off a brilliant diagonal pass by Marcus Johansson. It was the seventh goal of the season for Hendricks, his second in two games.

New York scratched defenseman Dan Girardi, who missed his first game of the season with a rib cage injury. The Rangers are trying to keep pace in the Eastern Conference while coping with injuries to several key players, including leading scorer Brandon Dubinsky, who has a stress fracture in his left leg.

"We grind. We have confidence we can wear teams down," Boyle said.

"It's going to be like this for the next 2½ months," coach John Tortorella said. "We're happy we're grabbing some points here.

NOTES: The Rangers have held Ovechkin without a goal in four straight games. Ovechkin took four of Washington's 11 shots through the first two periods. ... New York's Brandon Prust played through a foot injury that occurred in Saturday's game in Atlanta. ... Washington fell to 20-0-2 when leading after two periods.

Packers' Rodgers has Sore Shoulder

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy says quarterback Aaron Rodgers' shoulder is sore after he was hit during Sunday's NFC championship game victory over the Chicago Bears.

McCarthy didn't seem overly concerned Monday, saying every player has bumps and bruises at this point in the season.

The Packers quarterback appeared to take a shot on his right shoulder from Bears defensive back Danieal Manning during his 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter of Sunday's game.

And McCarthy says Rodgers wasn't affected by what appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet hit by Bears defensive lineman Julius Peppers later in the game. Rodgers has had two concussions this season.

Knicks Top Wizards, End 6-Game Skid

Amare Stoudemire shook the basket with his dunks. Raymond Felton found his shooters on the wings, and knocked down his own shots when left open.

The New York Knicks looked right again, and it sure helped that the Washington Wizards do everything wrong on the road — even something as simple as getting dressed Monday night.

Stoudemire ended a mini-slump with 30 points, and the Knicks snapped a six-game losing streak and dropped the Wizards to 0-21 on the road with a 115-106 victory.

"We knew how important this game was," Stoudemire said. "We all pretty much showed the urgency to get this win."

Felton ended his dismal stretch with 17 points and 15 assists as the Knicks (23-21) avoided falling back to .500 with what would have been their longest skid of the season — and with Miami visiting Thursday. They beat Washington for the seventh straight time at Madison Square Garden and sixth in a row overall, sweeping the series for the first time since going 4-0 in 2003-04.

"Everything was clicking tonight," Felton said. "It was one of our better games."

Nick Young scored 22 points for the Wizards, now more than halfway to the NBA's first winless road mark in an 82-game schedule. They are closing in on the longest road skid to open a season, 29 straight losses by the Dallas Mavericks during the 1992-93 season.

The Wizards are still a long way from the 1990-91 Sacramento Kings, who lost their final 37 road games and finished 1-40.

"I'm not going to lie about that. If you lose on the road, you're going to think about it. You watch SportsCenter, you're going to see what everybody's talking about: you not winning road games. It gets tough," rookie John Wall said. "But for us to get them to stop talking about it, we've got to do what we've got to do on the road and get one."

Wall had 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, but the Wizards committed 20 turnovers that led to 24 points for the Knicks.

They also had one wardrobe malfunction. Rookie reserve Kevin Seraphin began the game with his shorts on backward and had to change in front of the bench during a first-quarter timeout as his teammates surrounded him.

Stoudemire had been held to 18 points in each of the Knicks' last two losses after scoring 20 or more in 26 consecutive games, but was 13 of 23 and added nine rebounds.

But the bigger problem lately may have been Felton, who might've wrecked his All-Star hopes by going 23 for 79 from the field in the last five games. He was 7 of 14 Monday and the Knicks turned it over only 11 times.

New York finally put it away midway through the fourth, holding Washington to one field goal in more than 5½ minutes during an 11-4 run that turned a four-point lead into a 110-99 advantage.

Wilson Chandler finished with 25 points and Danilo Gallinari had 17 for the Knicks, who finally got their offense going again after a tough road trip — with some help from the woeful Wizards.

"When we got (Chandler) and Gallo shooting the ball the way they do, guys coming off the bench contributing, Amare doing what he does, me getting everybody the ball, that's when we're at our best," Felton said. "Then our defense was clicking, we were getting rebounds, we were pushing the ball. I think we can play with anybody when we do that."

The Knicks' locker room board noted that the Wizards would turn it over, ranking near the bottom of the league, and sure enough they coughed it up 10 times in the first quarter, leading to 12 points that helped New York build a 33-26 lead.

"You can't turn it over 20 times and beat people on the road," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said.

But down 13 early in the second, Wall went to the bench and the Wizards surged back behind their reserves. Rookies Trevor Booker and recent NBA Development League call-up Mustafa Shakur were on the floor as Washington put up 36 points in the period and led by as many as five before the Knicks tied it at 62 at the half.

Stoudemire played the whole third quarter, throwing down a couple of powerful dunks en route to 15 points. The Knicks led 93-91 after a potential tying dunk by Seraphin was ruled after the buzzer.

Notes: The Wizards' reserves stood until they scored their first point, angering the fans behind them. The players were back sitting in time to catch a pass the Wizards fired out of bounds right after they took a 1-0 lead on a technical free throw after a defensive 3-second violation on the Knicks. ... The Knicks' game Thursday against Miami will be on TNT, the first time the network has televised a game from Madison Square Garden in five years. Longtime Knicks radio and TV voice Marv Albert will call the game with Reggie Miller, who thrived at MSG against the Knicks, and Steve Kerr. The studio team will broadcast from the arena and announce the starters for the All-Star game during the pregame show.

Federer Rolls into Semifinals

Defending champion Roger Federer advanced to the Australian Open semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 win over Stanislas Wawrinka on Tuesday in a mismatch that had all the intensity of a practice session.

Federer, aiming to become the first man to win five Australian titles, was playing in his record-tying 27th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal when he met Wawrinka in the first all-Swiss quarterfinal at a major.

No. 19 Wawrinka was playing at this stage for only the second time at a major. Making it worse, he had only beaten Federer once in their seven previous matches.

Federer and Wawrinka combined to win the Beijing Olympics doubles gold medal for Switzerland and have been Davis Cup teammates. So meeting on such a big stage had challenges for both men.

"I play Stan obviously very different to what (Andy) Roddick or (Gael) Monfils or what other players might do against him. Clearly it's not an easy match for him also," said Federer, now into his eighth consecutive Australian Open semifinal. "I've been in so many quarterfinals, in this situation so many times before, that I have the experience and I have the game to, you know, be tricky for him.

"The scoreline suggests maybe it was easier than it looked like. I thought it was a pretty tough match."

Wawrinka had only one look at a break chance against the 16-time Grand Slam winner, in the sixth game of the second set, and lost three straight points to let Federer off the hook.

Federer cashed in on five of his seven break opportunities.

Federer next plays the winner of Tuesday's later match between No. 3 Novak Djokovic and Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych. Federer's last two Grand Slam losses have come against Berdych at Wimbledon and Djokovic at the U.S. Open. Djokovic also beat Federer in the semifinals here in 2008 before going on to win the title.

For Federer, the match will be more about making the final than seeking revenge.

"I got them back a couple of times at the end of the year," he said. "I don't feel like I need to get back at them necessarily, but I'm not just going to come out here and give them the match."

January Transfer Rumours: Luis Suarez, Charlie Adam, Lassana Diarra, David Luiz

The New York Red Bulls have had success developing superb talents that become big contributors for the United States Men’s National Team. USMNT first-team regulars Tim Howard, Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore all spent the entirety of their MLS careers with the franchise, before moving on to bigger things in Europe.

The team may have two more names to add to that list.

After Saturday night’s friendly against Chile, current Red Bulls Tim Ream and Juan Agudelo continued their sharp form and further established themselves on the international stage.

Both players earned their second cap for the USMNT and impressed many.

Ream, who started and played every single minute for the Red Bulls in his rookie season, went the full 90 for the Americans. His composure and communication skills, for the most part, were good.

What was best though, and what drew a lot of attention during the MLS season, was his passing ability from the back. Ream does a good job seeing the field and getting the ball out cleanly. The good attack in the run of play that led to the penalty kick started with a Ream pass up the field.

There is a strong group of center backs ahead of Ream on the depth chart, but his performances in MLS and the last two friendlies with the USA have been good. He’s not far off the pace and those ahead of him are older, making Ream a real possibility for the 2014 World Cup. One thing he has done recently is move ahead of Omar Gonzalez as the better center back prospect, although the two do make a good combination that hopefully can grow together.

The player that drew the penalty kick to set up the equalizer against Chile was teen-sensation forward Juan Agudelo. He stole the spotlight in the friendly against South Africa in November, scoring in the 85th minute.

Against Chile, he came on as a substitute in the 60th minute and, along with fellow youngster Teal Bunbury, really provided a spark to a stalling US attack. Like Ream and Gonzalez, Agudelo and Bunbury are developing a good chemistry together (some are comparing their rise to the recent pairing of Altidore and Charlie Davies).

Agudelo is strong when dribbling at someone and can either play up top or out wide on the wing. The Red Bulls—where Agudelo was a rookie/home-grown player this past season—attempted to bring him on slowly, but when they started him in the final two games of the regular season and both playoff games, those plans quickly changed.

Each time he has stepped onto the pitch, be it for club or country, the excitement level of the fanbase grows. The difficulty for the Red Bulls, as well as Bob Bradley (more so with Agudelo than Ream) will be tempering expectations with his development. There is still a lot of room to grow and it is important that his development not get stunted with lofty expectations and ill-advised transfers.

For the Red Bulls, Agudelo should join Ream in the starting lineup in 2011. On the field they will provide lots of energy and creative talent going forward.

Off the field, as their status with the USMNT improves, their marketability will do the same. Add them to main attractions Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez, and the Red Bulls should be able to pack the stadium.

There are a couple of concerns, however. Firstly, the question often asked is how much longer the Red Bulls will be lucky enough to deploy these two talented players. Young and skilled, transfer rumors will swirl and, eventually, the two will follow in the footsteps of players like Howard, Altidore and Bradley and take their games to the next level.

From what Red Bull ownership is saying, that time is still a couple of years away though, and until that day comes, the team should just focus on doing the best they can while they have these talents.

Also, as they secure their spots on the national team they will frequently be unavailable to the club during the season. For example, the CONCACAF Gold Cup will be played this summer, overlapping with the MLS regular season. Both have an outside shot of making the squad and if they do, they will leave the team for the duration of the tournament.

The Red Bulls—like the whole league—are no stranger to losing players to international duty, however, they do know how to handle the situation.

What is most important is that the team currently holds two of the brightest young soccer stars in America, and they will be strong contributors to the club trying to win its first championship in the history of the franchise.

NHL All Star Game: Sidney Crosby Officially Announces He Will Not Participate

The NHL All-Star Game is almost here. Instead of who’s on the roster, one of the hottest topics has been who may or may not be on the roster. After weeks of speculation, it’s official. Sidney Crosby announced today that he will not be participating in this year’s NHL All-Star Game due to the lingering symptoms of his concussion.

The NHL was giving Crosby (along with other currently injured players Evgeni Malkin and Ales Hemsky) until Friday to announce whether or not they would be able to play. The league, as well as fans, were holding out hope that Crosby would be able to play. After all, prior to his injury, he’s been the most prolific player this year.

Alas, it was not meant to be. Crosby and the Penguins are putting the star’s health first, as they should. As Crosby said in his media scrum, “People say mild concussion, but I’m not sure there’s such a thing. It’s a serious thing.” Since Crosby is still recovering, and has yet to be even cleared to resume skating, he and the Penguins decided to go ahead and announce he wouldn’t be competing, instead of leaving it to the last minute.

What does the face of the league’s absence mean for the All-Star Game? Unfortunately, Crosby hasn’t played in an All-Star Game since 2007 due to injury. Most recently, he missed the 2009 game in Montreal due to a knee injury. However, since the league was (and is) still fighting for attention, Crosby did them a favor and still attended the festivities.

Crosby won’t be travelling to Raleigh though this year. Luckily for the league, they announced a new format for the All-Star Game as their gimmick this year. Hopefully, the new format will build excitement and cause viewers to still tune in to the All-Star Game.

Honestly, I don't think it makes a difference whether Crosby attends or doesn't attend the All-Star Game. If he had missed the Winter Classic, the playoffs, or the Olympics with a concussion, then it would be a big deal.

Sure, the game is still a competition, but it's played for fun and to showcase the league's top talents. Crosby is one of those top talents, but with all the other top names, his presence won't have a huge impact.

But the All-Star Game is really for those flashy personalities to show off in the skills competition. Crosby has never been one of those flashy personalities, a fact that he's been criticized for in the past. It's also another way for the league to show off their top talent and attract new fans.

Crosby's presence will be missed for that, but it's more important for him to focus on his health. That makes him an even bigger role model for young hockey players, showing them that they need to be wary of their health. This reflects even better on the league, having smart players like Crosby will portray a better image for the face of the NHL.

James Reimer: Toronto Maple Leafs' Goalie Of The Future or Mirage?

The recent announcement that the Toronto Maple Leafs will be carrying three goaltenders on their upcoming road trip has the Leafs Nation thinking two-fold. First, given the fact that three goaltenders is a crowd, will veteran goaltender J.S. Giguere be moved? And second, if J.S. Giguere is not in the Leafs’ future plans, where do James Reimer and Jonas Gustavsson fit into the equation?

Last week, Giguere told reporters that he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause if the Maple Leafs brass asked him to, leading to speculation that he may be on the move before the trade deadline expires.

Injuries and a mediocre season in which Giguere has posted a 9-8-3 record to go along with his .900 save percentage and 2.71 goals-against average may be enough of a roadblock for contending teams to stay clear of Giguere, but given the fact that he has won a Stanley Cup and has a good reputation on and off the ice, may be enough to entice at least one team to make an offer for Giguere.

Don’t hold your breath Leaf fans, the return for Giguere will likely be small. In the end, a third round draft choice should be enough to get a deal done, or the addition of another mid-tier prospect (something the Maple Leafs have a ton of already).

Whether Giguere is dealt or not, the writing is on the wall. Either Gustavsson or Reimer look to be the Maple Leafs’ goaltender of the future.

The question is, are either of these goalies ready to take the reins and be the number one goalie in Toronto, or are the Maple Leafs putting too much faith in two very inexperienced/untested youngsters to lead them to the promised land, a.k.a “the playoffs?”

Gustavsson has been inconsistent all season, posting a 6-13-2 record to go along with his lofty 3.29 GAA and terrible .890 save percentage. A number of tough loses has caused Gustavsson to lose his temper, often causing the young Swede to slam his stick into the goal posts.

Gustavsson tends to say all the right things when interviewed by the media, but one has to wonder, is Gustavsson mature enough to play in this market? Can he be counted on in the pressure cooker that is Toronto?

Thus far, given his immature behavior, one has to think “no," Gustavsson cannot handle the pressure in Toronto. The fact is, maybe he never will. Throwing temper tantrums in front of 20,000 fans never evokes much confidence from management, or the fans for that matter.

On the other hand, James Reimer came up from the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, Toronto Marlies, and played exceptionally well, posting a 4-2 record to go along with his stingy 2.26 goals against average and superb .933 save percentage.

Six games does not make an NHL career, but Reimer’s play has a lot of Maple Leaf fans talking about him as the Blue and White’s goaltender of the future.

Maple Leaf fans have a penchant for putting too much pressure on their young players. The anointment of James Reimer as the next Johnny Bower may be yet another example where Leaf fans are expecting too much too soon.

Through 26 games, Reimer has a combined record of 14-8-2 with the Marlies this season with one shutout, a save percentage of .925 and a GAA of 2.25. Those numbers are eerily similar to the ones he has put up with the Leafs, which says something about his consistency, if nothing else.

The issue for the Maple Leafs is this: given the fact that neither goalie is a sure number one, why play Giguere at all?

Going forward, Reimer and Gustavsson should get the lion’s share of the games. There is no value of having Giguere between the pipes, as any potential suitor will not be chasing Giguere based on the next four weeks of his career, but rather what he has already done in the past.

In fact, every game Giguere plays could potentially irritate his already bad groin injury, which, in turn, could make it impossible to move the likable veteran.

Are Gustavsson or Reimer the goalies of the future? Sadly, nobody knows. It says here, it is high time the Maple Leafs found out, and if that means sitting Giguere the rest of the season, so be it.

Chicago Blackhawks: John Scott's Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Routine Won't Produce Wins

A little over halfway into Sunday's game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers, something came to mind that reminded me of a popular toy of by-gone days.

Last Christmas, I bought my son a Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robots game (yes, they still make 'em). As we were putting it together, he asked me why he couldn't take the red and blue pugilistic warriors out of the ring and have them go into battle with his action figures and such.

"Because they just fight each other," I explained. "The blue robot just fights the red robot in front of it until one knocks the other one's block off."

In July, Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman got himself a red robot. His name is John Scott.

And it's becoming evident that this pick up has been a mistake.

John Scott has not produced in a way that has added anything to the Blackhawks this season. This isn't personal. I think he's been a stand up guy as far as recognizing what his role is in the NHL. The trouble is that the role he plays is a dying breed in the league and will continue to be unless the NHL ever rescinds the instigator rule.

Scott signed a two-year contract with the Hawks this summer. The organization brought the former member of the Minnesota Wild to Chicago under three assumptions:

1. We needed an enforcer.

2. John Scott was an enforcer.

3. John Scott was a defenseman.

So far none of those assumptions have proved to hold water.

It didn't take long to realize that Scott was not worthy of minutes at defense, as he has enough problems skating forward. The trouble has been compounded by thinking Scott could get on the ice as a wing. After all, he was an enforcer, and we needed an enforcer.

The problem is (and Sunday's contest is a clear example of this) that John Scott is not an enforcer. He is a fighter.

I cringed when Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk talked about making a lineup change to accommodate the Flyers, even as the present lineup was finishing off a 4-1 win in Detroit Saturday afternoon. We've been rolling four lines lately, and everyone has been making a contribution. Why make a change?

In come the Flyers. Out goes Jack Skille. In comes Scott. The Hawks neutralize the fourth line for the duration of the game. Jake Dowell and Viktor Stalberg might as well be out there by themselves.

Now comes the really frustrating part.

There were two fights in the Hawks 4-1 loss. Bryan Bickell, who played a real physical game, dropped the gloves with Scott Hartnell in the first period. Then Daniel Carcillo came out to mess with the Hawks in the second period and someone decided to scrap. That player was...Dowell.

Where was Scott? He wasn't fighting because the only guy he was going to fight was Philly's fighter, Jody Shelly. Why? Because that's what Scott has done all season long. He is only going to face off against the other team's goon.

Just like the red robot.

He doesn't keep opposing goons from coming after our skill players. That would mean roughing them up in the flow of the game, and the big man simply is not able to do this. He doesn't deter most opponents. The only guy who has to worry about going up against him is the guy paid to fight anyway.

With the instigator rule, cementheads just can't maul someone to send a message or protect a teammate. Whether you think that's for better or worse, the fact is that the rule is in place. As a result, spontaneous fighting is a rarity in the league. Picking a fight these days is like trying to negotiate a prom date.

Scott doesn't even lead the Blackhawks in fights. Dowell, the action figure in my toy analogy, leads the team with eight. If you can't skate, can't defend and don't score, you'd better contribute with your fists. None of Scott's battles this year have been anything but a diversion from the hockey game Chicago was trying to win.

I concede that Scott is pretty adept at pounding the blue robot...er...I mean, opposing team's fighter. But his battles are fought only for the sake of fighting. They don't protect teammates. The Hawks are 3-4 in games in which Scott has dropped the gloves, so they don't guarantee victories.

Meanwhile, Chicago's depth has been compromised because of the roster spot taken up by a player who does not score or prevent goals.

Again, I don't blame this debacle on Scott. He strikes me as a hardworking guy who just wants a place in the NHL. Believe me, I respect the role he plays. Players of Scott's type have short shelf lives in pro hockey, because it's a tough job.

At the same time, Skille should not be sitting out games so that Scott can dance with the same cast of fighters with little benefit to the rest of the team. Nor should anyone else. The organization is making a mistake continuing to force a square peg into a round hole.

Preview of 'A Stand Up Mother ':

Transitioning from the flashy, show-business life of Los Angeles to the simple, small town life of Meadville, Pennsylvania has been anything but easy for comedian Tammy Pescatelli. As a working, stand-up performer, Tammy struggles to balance the many roles in her life: a wife to her husband Luca, a mother to her two-year-old son Little Luca, a daughter to her parents Mary and Jim, and a daughter-in-law to her hardheaded, Italian mother-in-law Rose. After hearing that her mother-in-law has doubts as to whether or not she and Luca are truly married due to their "justice of the peace" wedding, Tammy attempts to put her and Luca's union in front of Rose's eyes, as well as celebrate Little Luca's baptism, by planning a combination celebration: a wedtismal.

Meanwhile, as the planning gets underway, Tammy is reminded of the day-to-day battle she faces trying to remain a presence in Hollywood from afar in Pennsylvania when she gets a call from her agent about an audition in L.A. Tammy does her best to hold everything together, but with having to find a venue, shopping for a dress, and booking a band, the stress mounts for both her and Luca as they begin to find that planning a wedtismal isn't as simple as they imagined.

Donald Driver: Why We Should All Be Green Bay Packer Fans This February

If I was given the ability to select one man in the history of any sport and put him into that sport's Hall of Fame, I wouldn't choose Pete Rose, Dennis Rodman or Don Mattingly—heck, not even Jerry Kramer.

I would pick Donald Driver. No man in the history of sports stands for what an athlete should be more than him.

The story of this man is a fascinating one. It's also one that few people know.

Driver grew up in the slums. The kid was dirt poor. He lived out of the trunk of his car.

When he was in seventh grade, his older brother noticed Driver's incredible speed, agility and hands—so he put it to use.

Things were so bad for the Drivers that Donald, dubbed "Quickie" by his brothers, was using his God-given talents to steal cars.

Those cars he would sell for drugs, drugs he claims he never used, but rather resold for more money.

Hey, when things are bad, they're bad. Driver says he probably stole 20 or 30 cars, and he was only caught once.

But that once changed everything.

Just as he was starting the car, he heard sirens, so he did what anybody would do—stepped on the gas and got away as fast as possible.

However, just as he was making his escape, he hit an old woman's car as she was backing out of her driveway. He hopped out of the car and sprinted away, and he was in the clear.

He had the cops beat by a few blocks, but something made him turn back.

It was the old lady. He went back to make sure she was okay.

That's right. Driver, who was in the midst of literally running for his life, the same kid who had just been caught stealing a car, turned back to check on the well-being of a woman that he had no affiliation with whatsoever, a woman he had never met in his life.

She was fine, but by the time he got back the police were rounding the corner, so she said to him, "Go sit on my porch."

For some reason he trusted her, and he took a seat on her porch.

By the time the cops got there she told them the lowlife had run off. "So who's that sitting on your porch?" one cop said to her.

The five words that followed would go on to change Driver's life as he knew it: "Oh, that's just my grandson."

Donald was mesmerized. He couldn't believe what had just happened—until the woman walked over to him and said, "Get in this house!" Inside, she went off on him. "Why do you do this?!" she said.

Now, this is no movie. He still stole another car or two because things were that bad. But one year later his mom sent him to live with his grandmother.

He joined the drill team at his grandmother's church and played organized football for the first time at Milby High School, where he found out Olympic speed and great hands can do more than just steal cars.

It then occurred to him what the lady was trying to tell him that day: "You could be doing so much more!"

And he did. Driver starred in track and football at Alcorn State, where he also got his accounting degree.

Isn't it funny how one good deed can mean so much?

After he finished college, Driver had a choice to make: He could either compete in the 2000 Sydney Olympics or join the Green Bay Packers, who had used the 213th overall pick to draft him in 1999.

With his family still in poverty, Driver needed an NFL paycheck desperately, so he chose the Packers.

Good choice.

For two years Driver played every practice as if he would have been arrested for taking a play off, and in 2002, when the Packers were about as desperate for a wide receiver as Driver himself was for money as a kid, guess who came out of nowhere to become a Pro Bowl receiver?

Driver didn't disappear after that 2002 season either. The guy has become a Packers legend, the second greatest receiver in team history.

However, talking to Driver, you wouldn't know it. He's never been a "look at me"-type guy, which is why he's flown so wildly under the radar in the same era as guys like Terrell Owens and Randy Moss.

From 2005 to 2008 he was, aside from Marvin Harrison, perhaps the best and most consistent wide receiver in all of football.

Driver holds Packers franchise records for career receiving yards, receptions, 1,000-yard receiving seasons, consecutive games with a reception and 50-plus-catch seasons.

However, that is not why Donald Driver deserves your utmost respect. He deserves it not because of who he is on the field, but rather who he is off it.

He has his own charity, the Donald Driver Foundation, which offers assistance to ill children with unmanageable hospital bills, provides housing for the homeless and donates to a variety of local charities. He is also said to make more charity appearances than any other player on the team by a wide margin.

"He's a wonderful man," says Cathy Dworak, the team's manager of community relations. "He's always smiling, fun, positive. He calls me up and asks if there are any appearances I need done. Can you imagine?"

Earlier this season, with the Packers playing for their playoff lives against the Detroit Lions, Driver noticed his quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn't look right after taking a brutal hit on a scramble on the last series.

He told him that he should leave the game, that his future as a human being was more important than a stupid game. Keep in mind that's coming from a 36-year-old veteran in perhaps his last chance to win a Super Bowl, risking a shot at the playoffs to do something that I guarantee you 99 percent of other NFL players wouldn't have done.

It turned out Rodgers had his second concussion of the season. Driver very well may have saved his career.

That is why I root for the little engine that could from Alcorn State—because he cares about the people.

He cares about the fans, the kids, his teammates and even people he's never met (remember that old lady).

Which is why I will pray to God that if there is one great game left in Donald Driver's 36-year-old body, we see it on Super Bowl Sunday.

Nobody deserves a ring more.

Montana Fishburne Faked Suicide Attempt

Montana Fishburne faked a suicide attempt and it was all caught on video ... TMZ has learned.

Sources tell us that last August, Montana's dad, Laurence Fishburne, was so concerned about his daughter's well-being that he had a private investigator follow her around. The investigator shot video of Montana drinking what appeared to be bleach.

Turns out, Montana faked the whole thing. Sources say she found out a P.I. was videotaping her and drank the bleach "to put on a show."

The tape has become relevant in the ongoing criminal assault case against Montana because her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, had sent the tape to the prosecutor to demonstrate her client's troubled mental state and help get a plea deal that involved rehab, not jail time. The prosecutor agreed to the deal, but has since disavowed it and wants her to do jail time.

The prosecutor argues in legal papers, obtained by TMZ, that the video "was just a ploy by the defendant to manipulate the People to offer a more lenient sentence."

But we've learned, shortly after sending the video to the prosecutor, Holley learned it was fake and actually notified the prosecutor everyone had been duped by it.

Holley is asking the judge to enforce the original deal -- rehab and no jail. The prosecutor is steadfast and does not want to honor that deal.

Fired Nurse: Tiger Woods Is Key in Hospital Cover-Up

The nurse fired for allegedly leaking Tiger Woods' medical records last year claims Tiger is partly to blame for his newfound unemployment -- spurring a massive hospital cover-up that cost him his job.

Nurse David Rothenberg -- who claims he's innocent -- filed new docs last Friday in his ongoing legal battle against the hospital that fired him ... insisting pressure from Tiger's side "may in fact be the motivation that led [the hospital] to severely punish" him.

According to the docs, Tiger's fame is "central to Mr. Rothenberg's claims that [the hospital] is engaged in a continuing cover-up" -- because if Tiger weren't a big name ... the hospital wouldn't have made such a stink about the records being leaked in the first place.

David claims the hospital is using him as a scapegoat to cover up the true reason for the leak -- the "lack of basic computer security for [the hospital's] patient health care system and the behavior of numerous doctors ... who inappropriately accessed [Tiger's] health care information."

As we previously reported, David is suing for defamation ... demanding $400,000 in damages.

Stafon Johnson Files Suit Against USC

Former USC running back Stafon Johnson has filed a lawsuit against USC over a weightlifting accident that almost killed him -- claiming his USC weightlifting coach recklessly struck the bench press bar that crushed his neck.

Johnson claims he was bench pressing 275 pounds in the USC weight room in Sept. 2009 -- part of the required football regimen -- when Jamie Yanchar, an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the football team, was "spotting" him.

While Johnson attempted to grasp the bar on his own, Yanchar allegedly struck the bar, knocking it off balance and slipping from Johnson's hands. The bar fell on to his neck causing severe injury and ending his college football career.

According to the suit, filed today in L.A. County Superior Court, Yanchar's "negligent, careless and reckless" action in striking the bar "substantially increased the risk inherent in Mr. Johnson's bench pressing."

Johnson -- who eventually signed with an NFL team -- is suing for unspecified damages including loss of future earnings.

UPDATE: A rep from USC released a statementt saying, "USC firmly believes it was not at fault in Stafon Johnson's unfortunate weightlifting accident. We are sorry that Stafon was injured."

The statement continues, "USC and the entire Trojan Family have been exceptionally supportive of Stafon from the minute the accident occurred. We are disappointed to learn that Stafon has decided to file a lawsuit against USC."
