After David Akers missed two kicks in the Philadelphia Eagles' playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers earlier this month, safety Quintin Mikell said his teammate was distracted by an off-field issue.
His agent, Jerrold Colton, said it was a "private family health concern". Akers had been silent on the issue but told The Philadelphia Inquirer in a story that appeared in Sunday's editions that his 6-year-old daughter Halley had a malignant cyst in her left ovary that was removed in the week after the game.
"They used the word tumor or cyst or growth," Akers told the newspaper. "And you're like, 'OK, what does that mean?' Cancer is what that means."
Akers' wife, Erika, told the newspaper that she could tell from her seat in the stands at Lincoln Financial Field that her husband's mind wasn't solely on the game against the Packers.
"I could tell he was there doing his job," she told the newspaper. "But he wasn't there."
Akers missed field goals of 41 and 34 yards in the Eagles' 21-16 loss to the Packers.
According to early tests, doctors believe they removed all of the malignant tumor. Halley has to get blood tests each month for the rest of the year and then more tests periodically. Even is she remains cancer-free she likely will also eventually have to have her right ovary removed.
"I think a lot of it is the unknown for us, and still not knowing, still kind of holding on," Akers told the newspaper. "You just don't think this is going to happen to your kid."
Akers, who will be the NFC's kicker in Sunday's Pro Bowl, will be a free agent this offseason.

Who Had the Most Awful Onstage Moment?
Parrotheads had good reason to be upset this week.
Beloved "Margaritaville" singer Jimmy Buffett was released from an Australian hospital on Thursday, a day after he took a horrifying fall off the stage during a concert in Sydney.
"Jimmy has been released from the hospital and is doing well," reads a statement on margaritaville.com, though a concert planned for Saturday in New Zealand has been canceled.
In video footage, the 64 year-old singer is seen stepping off the front of the stage at Hordern Pavilion and falling to the concrete floor.
Dr. Gordian Fulde, head of the emergency department at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, said Buffett "really took a very nasty tumble."
"He just didn't see the drop in front of the stage," Fulde, who was at the concert, told Australia's Seven Network.
"I heard the crack and I thought this guy has broken his neck. He had a head injury and he lost consciousness ... [but] scans show that he's OK," Fulde added.
Whew -- sounds like it was a close call. Buffett had just finished singing the line, "It's been a lovely cruise, I'm sorry it's ended," when he fell off the stage and was rushed to a hospital.
Audience member Dan Bateman, 30, told The Daily Telegraph that Buffett fell face first off the stage.
"We were in the 10th row and it looked like he did a massive face plant after his encore and pretty much didn't get up,'' Bateman said. "Everyone was pretty horrified.''
Buffett is the latest celebrity to have a frightening, disturbing or just plain embarrassing on-stage moment circulate through the media.

Porn King to Octomom -- You HAD Your Money Shot ...
Octomom's house will NOT become a XXX property -- TMZ has learned the porn king who wanted to buy the home has officially decided to back off.
After Octo refused multiple job offers and FREE MONEY from Steven Hirsch -- the Vivid Entertainment president has finally ended negotiations to buy the note on the OctoPad.
Hirsch tells TMZ, "We tried really hard to develop some sort of a relationship with Nadya. We totally understood that she didn’t want to make a movie with us and we respect her decision."
Hirsch adds, "She has refused our check for her February mortgage payment and has made it very clear that she doesn’t need or want our help in any way."
He concludes, "At this point we will no longer pursue buying her $450,000 balloon payment, but remain open to speaking to her about other opportunities."
