Many New York Mets fans are pessimistic heading into 2011.
Now I'm not saying there's not a good reason for this—payroll inflexibility, infield depth, Oliver Perez—but fans right now prefer to look to the future than the present.
Unfortunately, the Mets are just one of four teams that did not have a single prospect featured on Jonathan Mayo's Top 50 list, unveiled on Tuesday night.
Jenrry Mejia was ineligible for the list because he no longer has rookie status and Wilmer Flores came in at No. 58, on the bubble behind Rangers shortstop Jurickson Profar and pitching prospects Jarred Cosart (Phillies), Tyler Skaggs, (D-backs), Dellin Betances (Yankees) and Ethan Martin (Dodgers).
The Mets don't have the prospects or the farm system like the Rays or the Royals, but they're not playing them every day. So where do the other NL East teams rank in the list?
The Braves had three guys in the top 21, the Phillies had two prospects inside the top 30 including the fourth overall prospect Domonic Brown and the Nationals had Bryce Harper ranked at No. 3.
The Marlins, like the Mets, had no one in the top 50.
New York's biggest problem is that, other than Mejia, they have very few, if any, Major League-ready prospects. Mejia will start in Triple-A most likely, and there's a really good chance that the Mets will be fielding the same core at the position players for many years to come.
Baseball America predicts David Wright, Jose Reyes, Ike Davis, Josh Thole and Angel Pagan will all be in the Mets' starting lineup on Opening Day of 2014, with the previously-mentioned Flores in left field, Reese Havens at second and Cesar Puello in right.
Puello is seen by some scouts as a better prospect than Kirk Nieuwenhuis, while Baseball America doesn't seem to rank Lucas Duda or Fernando Martinez, both players with big league experience, that highly at all any more.
The fact is that the Mets haven't drafted particularly well over the last decade. Their high school picks have looked distinctly average, and until last year Angel Pagan, Jon Niese and Josh Thole had made little to no impact. Take that trio out of the equation and you're left with very limited success in first-rounders David Wright and Scott Kazmir.
Then consider that the Mets sent Kazmir to the Rays in exchange for Bartolome Fortunato and Victor Zambrano only to watch him rack up 55 wins over the next five seasons as a full-time starter, and things are even less rosy.
The junior college picks have been even less impressive and the four-year college picks are headlined by a pitcher with an ERA north of 5.00 (Bannister) and a batter who has 14 homers in 639 at-bats (Murphy).
With few high-level draft prospects in the system and even fewer legitimate All-Stars on the 40-man roster, 2011 does indeed predict as being tough.
That's okay though, because the Mets have the cash to bring in everybody they need to succeed, right?
I'll cheer for this team through thick and thin, but 2012 can't come soon enough.

MLB Top 50 List Shows Mets Have Few Legit Prospects in Minors
Wednesday Watch List: More Eyeliner On That Werewolf!
Welcome to Watch List, where we identify five things on TV to watch while you stay at home and prepare your response to the State of the Union address. Why didn’t the President say anything about the radiator sitting out in Mrs. Jessup’s front yard? You talk about damaging the country! LET’S GO!
FACEOFF – 10:00PM (SyFy – an NBC/Universal network) From the folks at SyFy comes this new reality competition that pits aspiring Hollywood makeup artists and special effects designers against one another. Because after “Project Runway” and “Top Chef,” where else can you go but to the subsegment of humanity that worships at the altar of Rick Baker? Tonight’s first challenge forces the artists to create a human/animal hybrid. Like Dr. Moreau, only REAL! Well, not real. But fake real, which is still kinda real. Also note this show’s logo. You can tell they were dying to stick a slash in between FACE and OFF, just like that Nic Cage movie. But that slash is proprietary. Nic owns that slash, people. ANTICIPATION: HEAVY MAKEUP!
THE TRAVELER’S GUIDE TO LIFE – 10:00PM (Travel Channel) This new Travel Channel series features random celebrities talking about their favorite travel experiences and getting to visit places you probably won’t. Included in tonight’s premiere episode are Buzz Aldrin, Andrew Zimmern, and the lady who plays Jan on “The Office.” Tell me she went somewhere with nude beaches. Nude beaches always sound so promising on paper. ANTICIPATION: NO PASSPORT NEEDED!
NOVA scienceNOW – 8:00PM (PBS) The most awkwardly titled PBS show in the universe takes a look at the possibility of living forever through computer avatars. If this means we’ll all turn blue and be featured in mildly racist James Cameron movies, you can count me out. But if it means we’ll all get to become CyberChrist, like at the end of “The Lawnmower Man,” I am DOWN. ANTICIPATION: CREEPY!
MY STRANGE ADDICTION – 9:00PM (TLC) My favorite show to look up in the guide features a woman who picks scabs off her body up to two hours a day (that sounds fun, actually), and a man who is in a serious relationship with a doll. It’s just like that Ryan Gosling movie, only no one thinks it’s cute and the guy looks NOTHING like Ryan Gosling. ANTICIPATION: DOUBLE CREEPY!
WHEN WOMEN KILL – 10:00PM (E!) When women kill, everything smells nice! And the bodies are arranged in a lovely star formation! And thank you notes are written within a week of the killing. Women are great like that. ANTICIPATION: MURRRRDER!

Monday Watch List: Bachelorettes With Black Eyes!
Welcome to Watch List, where we identify five things on TV to watch while you stay at home and get out of changing the diapers by faking a knee injury. So very convenient. LET’S GO!
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE – 9:00PM (PBS) PBS documents the building of the Panama Canal, an undertaking that cost the United States $375 million, took ten years to build (1904-1914), and cost God knows how many workers their lives due to malaria and construction accidents. I bet the people who worked on the Canal got really mad when commercial aviation became a reality. “You mean you can just fly over it now? Well isn’t that typical?” ANTICIPATION: MASSIVE!
HOUSE – 8:00PM (FOX) House has to hang out with Cuddy’s kid or something. And you never want your nasty medical drama to take a turn into the Steve Guttenberg comedy area. It never ends well. Also, an embarrassing photo of Chase shows up on a social networking site. Since brand names are usually never used on big shows like this, let’s assume that site will be called FacePamphlet. ANTICIPATION: AGING!
TABATHA’S SALON TAKEOVER – 10:00PM (Bravo – an NBC/Universal network) That creepy British lady with the creepy haircut heads to a hair salon in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, where the staff is in revolt and the owner is a moron. But with creepy lady’s help, I’m sure they’ll be back to shaving Red Sox logos into the side of mullets in no time. ANTICIPATION: BAD HAIR NATION!
INTERVENTION – 9:00PM (A&E) Tonight’s addict is named Jimbo. And with a name like Jimbo, is there any doubt that his addiction is meth? No, there is no doubt. ANTICIPATION: METH!@
THE BACHELOR – 8:00PM (ABC): Tonight one of the bachelorettes has a black eye and she has no idea how she got it. Now THAT is a gal I can party with. That’s the kind of gal you should start off your reality show hooking up with only to dump five dates in for the real marriage material. Also tonight, Brad helps one of the gals overcome her fear of water. My goodness, where did they get these ladies, at a Marshall’s outlet store? It’s like a junior cougar bargain bin. Also appearing tonight on the show is… Dr. Drew! Of course. If there are women with black eyes and odd phobias that Dr. Drew can exploit to make himself look like the Savior, then he’s all over it. ANTICIPATION: CRAZY!
