Mel Gibson's mailbox was broken into Wednesday ... and cops are now on the hunt for a beaver.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ, Summit Entertainment -- which is distributing Mel's upcoming movie, "The Beaver" -- gave Mel the final cut of the movie on DVD. Mel screened it at his home, and at 10:45 AM put the DVD in his mailbox so a courier could pick it up and return it to Summit.
We're told the courier showed up at 2:30 PM Wednesday, and the DVD was missing.
The L.A. County Sheriff's Department is now on the case. But here's the sad part -- It's being investigated as a petty theft.
But don't worry Mel -- it's petty theft because of the value of the DVD. We're sure the movie is awesome.

Mel Gibson -- Oksana's Legal Cash Cow
It's a good thing Mel Gibson is rich, because he's bleeding green. Oksana Grigorieva's lawyers are asking him to pay a fortune in attorney's fees.
A gaggle of Oksana's present and past lawyers showed up in court Wednesday, chatting in the hallway about fees and asking Judge Scott Gordon to order Mel to open his wallet wide and fork over several million dollars .... for just a few months' work.
Here's a partial breakdown:
-- Oksana's current lawyers, Daniel Horowitz, Marty Garbus and Ron Litz, are asking for $1.2 million for work performed since September, 2010.
-- Manley Freid's law firm is asking for $250,000. Mel has already been ordered to pay Freid's firm $500,000.
-- Alan Shifman wants $163,000 for one month's work.
Other lawyers and law firms requested hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees as well.
Judge Gordon has not decided how much Mel should pay in the latest request.

Oksana's Ex-Bodyguard Sides With Mel Gibson
The person who knows more about Oksana Grigorieva's claims against Mel Gibson than anyone tells TMZ ... Oksana is grossly exaggerating or downright lying about the alleged domestic violence incident.
Kristian Herzog -- who served as Oksana's bodyguard until recently -- tells TMZ, Oksana admitted to him Mel never punched her, as she claimed to authorities. Rather, Herzog says Oksana told him Mel slapped her, and that's it. As TMZ first reported, Mel admitted slapping Oksana because he says she was shaking baby Lucia wildly.
Herzog -- who has been subpoenaed by Mel's lawyers in the custody war -- tells us Oksana admitted to him that she secretly taped Mel Gibson "to pressure Mel to pay her money." Oksana is currently being investigated by the L.A. County Sheriff's Department for alleged extortion.
Herzog -- who was privy to virtually every conversation Oksana had with her lawyers -- claims he had a sexual relationship with Oksana -- she denies it.
Herzog -- who runs The Bodyguard Group of Beverly Hills -- calls Oksana a "sexual sorceress."

D.A. in Mel Gibson Case -- No Decision Yet
The L.A. County District Attorney says he still hasn't decided whether to file domestic battery charges against Mel Gibson.
D.A. Steve Cooley says the case is "actively under review." Prosecutors met with Mel's lawyers -- Blair Berk and Jim Asperger -- yesterday. Law enforcement sources tell us the meeting had been planned for weeks.
Well-placed sources in the case tell us ... the D.A. has not made any decision on whether to file charges, partly because Mel's case is directly tied to the extortion investigation of Oksana Grigorieva, and that case has not yet been presented to the D.A.
And law enforcement sources tell us ... if the D.A. files criminal charges against Oksana, it could so compromise her credibility that any case against Mel would be futile.
Bottom line ... the D.A. can't make a filing decision until both cases are presented reviewed.

The Beaver' to Premiere at South by Southwest; Will Mel Gibson Show?
Mel Gibson and his beaver are headed to Texas.
No, that's not slang for something dirty. Academy Award winner Gibson and his feature film 'The Beaver' will be premiering at the Austin, Texas international film festival 'South by Southwest.' AP reports that 'The Beaver' will one of five films premiering there this March.
Jodie Foster directed and co-stars in the quirky movie, which features Gibson's character developing an unusual relationship with a beaver puppet he created to help separate the whirlwind stresses of his life.
This July, Gibson was dropped by his talent agency in light of domestic violence allegations. The actor has maintained a low profile since the incident, which was one of many since 1991 that have all but mauled his public image. An appearance at 'The Beaver's' premiere would be a big step for Gibson, although his current publicist is unsure whether the actor will be in attendance.
