Ricky Gervais Asked to Host Golden Globes Next Year

Despite previous reports that Ricky Gervais was banned from ever hosting the Golden Globes, it seems that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) might have had a change of heart.

The Daily Mail reports that Gervais revealed in the U.K. magazine Heat that he has been asked to present the Golden Globes next year. But the actor and comedian did not say if he accepted or rejected the offer of hosting the awards show for a third time in a row.

Gervais wrote, "The ratings went up again, and the organisers asked me to consider a third year. (But) I don't think I should. I don't know what I could do better. I certainly couldn't get more press for them, that's for sure."

Gervais continued, "I did exactly what I went to do: improve on last year's and have a laugh. The response was staggering. It was discussed on every news channel and chat show for weeks. The weird thing is, the question is always, 'Did Ricky go too far?' And the answer is always, 'No.' I have yet to find anyone who was actually offended by it."

Gervais recently went on CNN's 'Piers Morgan Tonight' where he defended his Globes hosting performance. Gervais said, "I'm not sorry for anything I said, because I'm not going to apologize for being true to myself. I don't care what people think of me. I care if I've done a good job, and I care if I've told the truth."

He continued, "They [the HFPA] hired me for a job, and if they didn't want me, they shouldn't have hired me."

Gervais came under fire for crossing the line at the annual awards show, which was broadcast worldwide. The comedian took jabs at actor Charlie Sheen's latest scandal, Robert Downey Jr.'s arrest record, Hugh Hefer's new engagement and the failure of 'The Tourist,' among many others.

Many people, including some celebs in the audience, took offense to some of his jokes. One star who voiced his apparent displeasure at some of Gervais' act was Robert Downey Jr. After the comedian joked about Downey's past addiction problems before introducing him on stage, the unhappy star quipped back.

"Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited, with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far, wouldn't you?" Downey said to the audience.

Judd Apatow, director of recent hit movies like 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and 'Superbad,' even mentioned Gervais when he played host at the Producers Guild Awards (held Jan. 22). Apatow wasted no time slamming Gervais, and reportedly laced his monologue with profanities in the process.

Even though some of his jokes were deemed "too close to the line," Gervais maintains his act wasn't malicious.
"There's nothing you shouldn't joke about," he said. "It depends what the joke is. Comedy comes from a good or a bad place, and I like to think that mine comes from a good place."

Ryan Seacrest & Julianne Hough's Golden Globes Date Night

Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough finally did it last night—walked a red carpet together, that is.

Our E! News anchor buddy and the Burlesque beauty walked arm-in-arm as they made their way into the Weinstein Company and Relativity Media party at Trader Vic's.

Michael Yo and I caught up with them during E! Online's (two-hour!) livestream of the party arrivals. Asked if it was, indeed, their first carpet together, Seacrest said...

"With the exception of the one we bought the other day that we put in our house," he said, quickly adding, "Did I say ours? Just kidding—it's mine."

Hough said she "felt like a woman" in her Marchesa gown. When Seacrest asked her what she felt like before, she cracked, "A little girl, which you love." D'oh!

Inside the party (presented by Marie Claire magazine), Seacrest and Hough canoodled in a corner. Ryan Gosling danced to Cee Lo's "F--k You" as he said hello to Michelle Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The Love and Other Drugs Globes-nominee joked that he had prepared an acceptance speech. "I spent months and months and months on it," he told me. "I spent months before the movie was even made working on it." And yes, Jakey wants to work with Anne Hathaway again. "I hope so soon," he said.

Later, Gosling was so excited to see Colin Firth, he walked across a table to get to him. And speaking of getting on top of a table, one very intoxicated-looking woman was dancing on her table when she fell and spilled her glass of champagne all over Marc Anthony.

Sofia Vergara and boyfriend Nick Loeb talked Valentine's Day. "I want flowers and chocolates," the Modern Family beauty said.

Ryan Phillipe was quite possibly the most low-key celeb of the evening. He not only declined doing interviews on the carpet (boo!), but he also spent much of the night by himself.

Paris Hilton hit the photo booth with our very own Brett Malec and Fox News' Deidre Behar. Where was the hotel heiress' boyfriend, Cy Waits? We're told he called it an early night.

Nicole Kidman was one of the first to arrive and hightailed it to her table to nibble on some fruit while Scarlett Johansson was just a few feet away chatting with Matt Damon.

No word if Damon ran into his ex, Minnie Driver, who looked fierce in a zippered body hugging black leather minidress. Thomas Jane sucked on a fat cigar all night, telling me and Yo that he'd love for Halle Berry to guest on Hung and wouldn't mind Betty White, too.

Gosling was one of the last to leave at about 12:30 as were Kate Bosworth (no Alexander Skarsgård in sight) and Golden Globe winner Claire Danes.

Helena Bonham Carter predicted that host Ricky Gervais would be "murdered" today for the jabs he took at celebs during his hosting duties, but also said he'll be back next year. "We're all grateful actually because it's essentially a real snooze fest," the King's Speech star said. "He keeps everyone awake."

Olivia Wilde: 'We Don't Get to Eat' on Golden Globes Day

Before Olivia Wilde turned heads in a Marchesa ball gown at the Golden Globe Awards Sunday, the 26-year-old actress reveals she had to seriously watch what she ate.

"I had a banana and then a sandwich," the TRON: Legacy star told UsMagazine.com of her pre-show meal. "We don't get to eat, you know? We don't get to eat until tonight."

Once she took her seat at the annual awards show, Wilde says she was finally able to sneak a few bites -- provided the cameras weren't on her.

"You pick the random breadsticks in the middle of the table and then hope you're not called on stage to present when you have a breadstick in your mouth," she joked with reporters backstage.

So how did the actress -- who tied the knot in 2003 with filmmaker Tao Ruspoli, the son of an Italian prince -- choose her outfit for the star-studded fete?

"I love the dresses for so many reasons," she told Us. "I'm actually really comfortable. I like the way its kind of swept together. It's like a little cocoon."

Golden Globes Cement Best Actress Oscar Race as a Natalie Portman-Annette Bening Showdown

In the lead-up to the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes are usually a pretty good indicator of who is on the road to Oscar glory. While the prizes are handed out by two entirely different voting bodies -- the Globes come from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a collection of foreign journalists who cover the American movie industry, and the Oscars are awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a collective of over 6,000 film professionals (actors, directors, writers, etc.) -- more often than not, if an actor or actress wins the Globes' lead dramatic acting prize, they go on to score the Oscar.

This year, however, both of the leading contenders for the Best Actress Academy Award -- Annette Bening and Natalie Portman -- took home Globes. In stark contrast to years past, a comedic performance is in very real contention for Academy's top acting prize, and since the Globes separate drama and comedy in the lead acting categories, all the Globes did was confirm something we already knew -- that this year's Best Actress race is pretty much a showdown between Bening (for 'The Kids Are All Right') and Portman (for 'Black Swan').

It's never a sure thing, of course, but the Globes do have a pretty good batting average when it comes to accurately predicting who will take home an Oscar. Only once in the last 10 years has the eventual Best Actress Oscar winner not also won a Globe. (The exception came in 2002, when Sissy Spacek took the drama prize for 'In the Bedroom' and Nicole Kidman won the musical/comedy award for 'Moulin Rouge,' while Halle Berry went on to win the Oscar for 'Monster's Ball.')

Most often, the Globes' Best Actress (Drama) winner is the one who takes home the big prize. Seven of the nine Globe winners who went on to win the Oscar won in the drama category, while the two musical/comedy winners -- Reese Witherspoon ('Walk the Line') and Marion Cotillard ('La Vie en Rose') -- won for dramatic performances in what the HFPA determined were musicals.

So while the Oscars do tend to favor drama, that Bening's performance is being treated as a comedic one certainly doesn't rule her out of the Oscar race. 'The Kids Are All Right' is probably better described as a dramedy than a full-on comedy, and her role as the lesbian mother of two children who seek out their sperm donor father is a heavy one.

There's also a sentiment in Hollywood that Bening is long overdue for an Oscar win and that her strong performance in 'Kids' is worthy-enough of recognition. The Academy has a long history of handing out what some call "career Oscars." Just last year, after four nominations and no wins, Jeff Bridges took home the Best Actor prize for 'Crazy Heart' despite being up against an arguably better performance by Colin Firth, who himself is the frontrunner for this year's win, in 'A Single Man.' There's no argument that Bridges gave a fantastic performance in 'Heart,' but was he really better than Firth, or was it just time for the acting legend to finally take home Hollywood's biggest prize?

Hollywood's inclination to award veteran performers who have racked up multiple nominations is well-known. In 2009, Kate Winslet, whose nomination for 'The Reader' was her sixth, took home the Best Actress trophy for a lukewarm-reviewed film while first-time nominee Anne Hathaway ('Rachel Getting Married'), who won raves as well as prizes from the National Board of Review, Broadcast Film Critics Association and multiple critics groups, looked on. In 1995, a famously competitive year, Susan Sarandon, who was 0-for-5 at the time, triumphed for her quiet turn in 'Dead Man Walking' over performances that have gone on to gain further esteem, most notably Sharon Stone's intense turn in Martin Scorsese's 'Casino.'

So while Portman's win in the drama category seems to better position her for a victory at the Oscars, the notion that it's Bening's turn to take the podium should not be discounted. The Oscars can be a notoriously political affair -- hence all the campaigning that goes on, when the award is meant to represent the best in film (not the most well-funded marketing machine). With both actresses enjoying Globe glory, Hollywood's second biggest honor has only further entrenched Portman and Bening in a celluloid war with the other -- for everyone else, well, it really is an honor just to be nominated.

Jake Gyllenhaal had a stunning redhead on his arm Sunday night at the Golden Globes, and he has everyone buzzing as to who the mystery girl is.

Well, the mystery ends here. Gyllenhaal brought ex-girlfriend and former child star Jenny Lewis as his date to the big show, according to PEOPLE. He was up for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his role in 'Love and Other Drugs,' but lost to Paul Giamatti in 'Barney's Version.'

Lewis, 35, has starred in 'Troop Beverly Hills,' 'The Wizard' and 'Foxfire' -- alongside Angelina Jolie -- but has recently spent time as the frontwoman of the indie rock band Rilo Kiley.

Gyllenhaal and Lewis dated back in 2001, and though their romantic relationship didn't last, they have remained good friends.

Gyllenhaal even took ex-girlfriend Reese Witherspoon to catch a set by Lewis back in 2009 at the Hollywood Bowl. The couple hung out with Lewis and her boyfriend, Jonathan Rice, after the show.

Gyllenhaal has been in the romantic spotlight recently for dating 21-year-old singer Taylor Swift. The couple reportedly broke up last month.

5 Biggest Golden Globes Surprises in TV Categories

For the first hour or so, almost every TV category presented at the 68th Annual Golden Globes was a shocker… Here are the five biggest surprises of the night:

– Katey Sagal wins best actress in a drama series. It’s not surprising that Sagal earned the award, it’s surprising she actually won considering how statue-deprived FX’s underdog series Sons of Anarchy has been. – HBO loses best movie/miniseries. At about a half hour into the Globes telecast, audiences were united by a single thought: “What the hell is Carlos?” HBO typically dominates longform categories and its $200 million-plus The Pacific along with Emmy favorite Temple Grandin got beat by a French-made mini that aired on little ol’ Sundance Channel. Not that HBO was too broken up about this since…

– Boardwalk Empire overthrew Mad Men (and Dexter and The Good Wife and The Walking Dead). Whaaaa? Just when we finally began to accept that nothing could beat Mad Men, something beat Mad Men. The Prohibition drama busted the AMC drama’s streak and helped put HBO back in the drama series driver’s seat. Just as surprising …

– Steve Buscemi wins best actor in a drama series. Some critics thought Buscemi was miscast in Boardwalk, but the HFPA disagreed. Mr. Pink beat out heavy-heavy hitters Bryan Cranston, Michael C. Hall, Jon Hamm, and Hugh Laurie.

– Chris Colfer wins best supporting actor in a comedy. Perhaps not the biggest surprise of the night on the TV side, but certainly the most moving. The Glee star’s jaw-dropped moment as he realized he won, followed by his inspiring speech, provided exactly the sort of emotional rush we want in award shows. “To all the amazing kids who watch our show … who are constantly told ‘No’ … by bullies at school that they can’t be who they are, well, screw that, kids.”
