Human Planet Season 1 Episode 1 Oceans - Into the Blue
Preview of 'Human Planet':
As an air-breathing animal, the human is not built to survive in water. But people have found ways to live an almost aquatic life so they can exploit the sea's riches. From a 'shark-whisperer' in the Pacific to Brazilian fishermen collaborating with dolphins to catch mullet, this journey into the blue reveals astonishing tales of ingenuity and bravery. Daredevil Galician barnacle-collectors defy death on the rocks for a catch worth 200 pounds per kilo. In Indonesia an epic whale-hunt, using traditional hand-made boats and harpoons, brings in a sperm whale. The Bajau 'sea gypsies' of the Sulu Sea spend so much time on water they get 'land sick' when they set foot on the land! We dive 40 metres down to the dangerous world of the Pa-aling fishermen, where dozens of young men, breathing air through a tangled web of pipes attached to a diesel engine, capture thousands of fish in a vast net. We see how surfing has its origins in the ancient beliefs of the ocean-loving Polynesians, and we join a Borneo free-diving spear-fisherman on a breath-taking journey 20 metres down in search of supper.

Judge Deals Jackson Doc Two Setbacks with Rulings
A judge has dealt the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death two setbacks, bringing him a step closer to a trial that could end with him being sent to prison and also taking away his livelihood.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor on Tuesday told Dr. Conrad Murray that after listening to six days of testimony at a preliminary hearing, he thought there was enough evidence to support a possible finding of guilt at trial for the cardiologist to be convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
The ruling sets the stage for a high-profile trial that will examine all aspects of the pop star's death and try to finally place responsibility for his demise at the age of 50.
Moments after he delivered the ruling, Pastor also suspended Murray's license to practice medicine in California, a move that the physician's attorney warned could prompt two other state where he has clinics to do the same.
Murray has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's June 2009 death, with prosecutors accusing him of providing the singer with a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives. The doctor has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court on January 25 for another arraignment.
Pastor made minimal comments on his ruling that there was enough evidence for Murray, 57, to stand trial. But the judge was clear that he thought Jackson's former personal physician may pose an "imminent danger" if allowed to keep his medical license.
Murray's attorney, Ed Chernoff, called the suspension the "nuclear option," noting that Murray hadn't practiced medicine in California since Jackson's death.
"If you do that, he's dead in the water," Chernoff said. "He has no practice anymore. His patients have no doctor."
A prosecutor portrayed Murray in closing statements Tuesday as a doctor who showed poor medical judgment and who had cost the Jackson family dearly.
"Because of Dr. Murray's actions, Michael is gone," Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said. "Because of Dr. Murray's actions, Michael's children are left without a father."
On the final day of the preliminary hearing, another of Murray's attorneys grilled experts on the possibility that Jackson somehow gave himself a fatal dose of propofol.
A coroner's official and a prosecution expert said that while it's possible Jackson swallowed propofol when his doctor stepped out of his bedroom, it was unlikely. Both said if that's what happened, it doesn't change Murray's culpability.
Dr. Richard Ruffalo, an anesthesiologist who testified as an expert witness, said Murray expressed concern about Jackson being addicted to the anesthetic in an interview with police two days after the singer's death. The cardiologist told police he left Jackson alone to use the restroom, and when he returned the pop star wasn't breathing.
"It's the same as having a heroin addict and leaving the syringe next to him and walking away," said Dr. Richard Ruffalo, an anesthesiologist who testified as an expert witness.
He said Murray lacked the proper medical equipment to properly monitor Jackson, who was receiving propofol to help him sleep six nights a week for at least two months before he died.
Ruffalo also didn't properly attempt to revive Jackson, calling his attempts to perform CPR on the singer's bed "useless." The technique must be performed on a hard surface.
Compounded with Murray's delay in calling 911, which prosecutors said could have been as much as 21 minutes, the doctor's treatment of Jackson represented an extreme deviation from the standard of care, Ruffalo said.
Walgren made the point in his closing arguments, during which he placed the blame for Jackson's death squarely on the doctor.
"Michael is not here today because of an utterly inept, incompetent and reckless Dr. Conrad Murray," Walgren said.

Toronto Maple Leafs Surging, Goaltender James Reimer, Grabovski Are Key
With last night’s 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings the Toronto Maple Leafs have now won four of their past five matches, leading many Leaf fans to suggest that their beloved Buds are indeed turning the corner on their way to respectability.
While it is still a tad early to be throwing accolades towards the Blue and White, one cannot help but see that the Leafs now occupy 26th spot in the standings, leaving them just one point away from surpassing the Florida Panthers, which, while the Panthers still have a game in hand, would bring the Buds out of a lottery pick position.
For Leafs general manager Brian Burke, having his team finish out of a lottery position would be the first step towards that elusive respectability, both in terms of on-ice product and with regard to his many offseason moves (which were supposed to have the Maple Leafs competing for a playoff spot.
Leading the way for the Leafs has been the team’s second unit of Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur and Nikolai Kulemin, a.k.a. “the misfits.”
Grabovski, Kulemin and MacArthur have combined for 19 points their past five games, making them one of the hottest trio’s in the entire NHL.
Another key contributor has been goaltender James Reimer, who, through five games, owns a 3-1-0 record to go along with a sparkling 1.90 goals against average and an equally impressive .945 save percentage.
Reimer’s only blemish came against the Boston Bruins on January third, in which the Leafs lost a tough one by a final score of 2-1.
Prior to being called up to the big club Reimer posted a 14-8-2 record with the Marlies. His .925 save percentage and 2.25 GAA stands out as one of the best in the AHL, this on a Marlies team that has just 19 wins on the season.
To many, Reimer’s promotion to the big club came as a surprise, but when you look over the numbers and consider his success, it was a no-brainer to bring him up, especially when you consider how inconsistent both J.S. Giguere and Jonas “don’t call me the monster” Gustavsson have been thus far.
A win tonight against the San Jose Sharks will only further Leafs Nation's confidence in their newly found diamond in the rough and give the Blue and White their fifth straight road victory.
With 41 games in the books on the season the Maple Leafs can hardly be impressed with their paltry 17 wins on the season. But as the saying goes, sometimes it’s not how you start, rather how you finish that people remember you for.
For the Maple Leafs, a strong finish will go a long way towards erasing the ugly memories of the first 41 games and get the team into a desirable position in the standings, mainly, out of a lottery position.
Until next time,
Peace!

Until next time,
Peace!

Dustin Byfuglien and Tobias Enstrom Are Selected For the 2011 NHL All-Star Team
It should come as no surprise to anyone, especially Atlanta Thrashers fans, that Dustin Byfuglien and Tobias Enstrom were selected to the 2011 NHL All-Star squad. The NHL recently published the official roster and the two talented defensemen were on the list.
Both Atlanta players are having exceptional seasons at the halfway point. Byfuglien has consistently led his team in goals and points and Enstrom has upped his game, scoring more goals while setting up players for opportunities with astute passes.
Without a doubt, Byfuglien and Enstrom have helped lead the Thrashers to a winning record and perhaps their first playoff berth in years and only the second one in Thrashers history.
Byfuglien is on track to score 27 goals and nearly 80 points. He also is one of the league leaders in game winning goals.
Enstrom has improved his play offensively and defensively, utilizing smart positional play along with his excellent puck handling skills to engineer consistent offensive opportunities for his defense partner, Byfuglien and his other Atlanta teammates.
Enstrom is also on track for a career high season tracking at 70 points.
Both players have been the linchpin for the team all season and are deserving of their All-Star selections.

Pittsburgh Penguins: Recent Play Proves Why Sidney Crosby Leads Hart Candidates
With the Pittsburgh Penguins not bringing much to the table in their most recent games, a strong statement is being made to injured captain Sidney Crosby and his importance to the team, thus making him the leading candidate to win the Hart Trophy as the most valuable player to his team.
Since his entrance into the league, Crosby was the shining light of the organization. The player that would lead the dying Penguins organization to the Promise Land, similar to how Mario Lemieux resurrected the franchise two separate times as a part of the organization, once as a player and another as an owner.
A look back at his five and a half seasons in the NHL, and Crosby has consistently done what was asked of him. He has become an example to the hockey world, demonstrating how hard work and a constant desire of improvement can bring all of the success in the world.
This season is no different as Crosby, despite sustaining a mild concussion sidelining him for the last three games, has elevated his game once again and has become a major factor in the Pens' success. His lack of presence on the ice, subsequently, has dealt a harsh blow to the team's overall performance.
Following an impressive 12-game winning streak, the Pens have begun to stumble in the wins department, even against "beatable" teams.
A major reason behind this recent occurrence is the Pens' inability to close out games in the third period. Once dubbed the "comeback kids", the Pens now see themselves ahead of teams by a handful goals halfway through the third, only to watch that scoring gap disappear.
The names "choke artists" are now being pegged to the Pens.
To be clear, a lack of Crosby isn't the sole reason the Pens are having some issues currently. A complete defensive breakdown in the third period during last night's game against the Boston Bruins doesn't fall on the shoulders of one player.
This is a team effort.
However, it would be foolish to think the team's problems have nothing to do with his absence.
Crosby has not only been the backbone of the offense, but of the entire team as well. With each passing season, his defensive abilities have improved as well as his faceoff numbers, making Crosby a threat in all three zones.
Of course, his bread and butter has been the offensive zone.
Crosby strung together an impressive 25-game scoring streak before the New York Islanders managed to bottle up his game. This streak was the 11th longest scoring streak in NHL history and the longest since Mats Sundin put up a 30-game scoring streak in the 1992-1993 season.
Lemieux, in a press conference at the Winter Classic, equated Crosby's streak with his own play that dominated the hockey world once upon a time.
"It's much tougher to dominate the way the League is set up," he said. "What he's doing now is much more impressive than what I did years ago."
What's even more impressive is that Crosby hasn't had much help from the rest of his team.
During Crosby's scoring streak, especially during the team's 12-game winning streak, he became a rare force that saw him put the entire Penguins team on his back with some help from the steadily improving Marc-Andre Fleury.
Without Crosby, there is no possible way this Pens team is near playoff contention. Some may argue that the Pens need Crosby too much.
It certainly explains why the Pens have had problems generating consistent offense since his injury. It also gives credit to the idea that Crosby is the leading Hart candidate.
Everyone knows of Crosby's skill, and the same goes for the other Hart candidates such as Steven Stamkos, Henrik Zetterberg, and Daniel or Henrik Sedin or Ryan Kesler. However, what puts Crosby ahead of the pack is the fact that he doesn't have the help these other players do.
Stamkos has Martin St. Louis, and the two are separated by five points. The Sedin twins are tied in points, and Kesler is their teammate. Zetterberg has Pavel Datsyuk, who is 10 points behind him.
Sure, many may say that Crosby has Malkin, but Malkin hasn't been playing anywhere to his potential. When he has come close to doing something, he has an inability to play in that form consistently.
emates Chris Kunitz and Pascal Dupuis have been playing some of the best hockey of their careers, but even then, their numbers aren't quite indicative of top-line wing talent. Kunitz has 13 goals and 28 points and Dupuis has eight goals and 18 points.
It should be no surprise that Crosby sits at the top of the Pens with 32 goals and 66 points. However, the player with the second-most points is defenseman Kris Letang, who has seven goals and 37 points. Malkin is third with 15 goals and 35 points.
It's a significant gap and one that needs to lessen if certain players want to get back on the right track.
At this point in the season, there are many players who have emerged ahead of the pack, but none have made the impact Crosby has made when he has been in and out of the Pens lineup.
His ability to carry the Pens while putting up record numbers is all the proof necessary.

'American Gladiators' Host -- Jousting with DUI
Mike Adamle -- the longtime host of the original "American Gladiators" -- was arrested around 1AM Monday morning on suspicion of DUI ... and cops say he was acting so "erratic" they tested him for drugs.
Cops say 61-year-old Adamle -- a former Chicago Bears running back -- was pulled over after blowing through a stop sign in his 2002 BMW just outside the Chicago area. When cops approached the vehicle, they suspected Adamle had been boozing.
According to the Chicago Sun Times, Adamle failed a field sobriety test and was taken to a nearby police station... where he exhibited "erratic behavior" and was subsequently taken to a hospital for a drug screen. The results from the drug test are pending.
Adamle was eventually arrested and charged with disobeying a traffic control device, DUI and failing to notify the Security State's office of an address change.
Adamle is due back in court on Valentine's Day.

Charlie Sheen on the Set -- Like Nothing Happened
TMZ has learned Charlie Sheen is back on the set of "Two and a Half Men" and is showing absolutely no sign he went on a major bender this weekend.
One source connected with the show tells TMZ, "He has the constitution of an ox," adding, "He's figured out a way of shutting down [the substance abuse] long enough so he can function normally when he has to. He's a complete functioning addict."
As TMZ first reported, Charlie was on a bender in Las Vegas over the weekend, partying with 3 porn stars. As one source involved in the situation tells TMZ, Charlie doesn't believe he has a problem: "He's having a good time. On the surface it's the opposite of hitting rock bottom."
Sources tell us people on his team talked to him on Friday about getting help for substance abuse, but Charlie would have none of it. By the way, we're told the show Charlie taped on Friday is "great, and Charlie nailed it."
Charlie arrived at 10:30 AM and is now on the set, rehearsing with Jon Cryer.

Jenn Sterger Coming Out for March Madness
Jenn Sterger's finally ready to go public ... as in, rescheduling the public appearance she abruptly pulled out of -- and promised to rebook -- when the Brett Favre sexting scandal first broke.
TMZ has learned Jenn will be hosting a March Madness party at the grand opening of Public House in Chicago on March 17.
Jenn's been laying way low since Brett's alleged penis pics started popping up on the Internet in October -- prompting her to back out of a Chicago bar event with the same people marketing the NCAA hoops party.
We're told Jenn will pose for pics and sign autographs -- and she's donating her appearance fee to Project Sunshine.

'You're Cut Off' Star -- Popped for DUI
One of the spoiled, rotten she-brats on the new season of "You're Cut Off" was busted for DUI in West Hollywood last night ... at the SAME TIME her show was premiering on VH1.
TMZ has learned Jennifer Jowett -- the chick who declared on the show, "Ugly people annoy me" -- was pulled over for talking on her cell phone while driving ... and when the officer approached the vehicle, the cop detected alcohol on her breath.
Law enforcement sources tell us, 28-year-old Jowett performed "poorly" on a field sobriety test -- and was then given a breathalyzer. We're told Jowett's blood alcohol content was .10 -- just over the legal limit of .08.
Cops placed Jowett under arrest and took her to a nearby station -- where she was booked and held overnight. We're told she was released around 8:00 AM after posting bail.

Carey Hart to Hard Rock: You Cooked the Books!
Freestyle motocross rider Carey Hart's company is suing the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, claiming he was robbed blind by the hotel over his investment in the Wasted Space Lounge.
Hart's company, S&H Projects, invested in the lounge, which opened in July, 2008. Hart -- who's married to P!nk -- claims the Hard Rock hid profits and inflated expenses, thus denying S&H its fair share.
Hart's company claims the Hard Rock created the deception to mask some serious mismanagement problems with the hotel.
Wasted Space shut down last August. Hart's company wants unspecified damages.
The Hard Rock denies the allegations, and claims Wasted Space never made a dime in profits.

Charlie Sheen's XXX Star -- The Bombshell Kiss
Bree Olson -- a member of Charlie Sheen's Las Vegas foursome -- has already tasted scandal once this week ... when she made out with famed Jesse James' mistress Bombshell McGee.
The girl-on-girl action went down at The Palms Hotel on Sunday ... where the next day, Sheen was spotted taking a shot of Grey Goose at a hotel bar.
We're told the vodka session was the tail end of an epic "bender" -- and Bree, along with two mystery porn stars, was with Charlie for some of the action.
But, as TMZ previously reported, Sheen's people are very concerned about the actor's health -- and members of his inner circle have been urging him to check into a rehab program. We're told Charlie doesn't think he has a problem.
But if Charlie kissed Bree ... and she's kissed Bombshell ... and Bombshell's kissed God knows what ... then dude does have a problem -- he should invest in some mouthwash ... stat.

'Jersey's' Angelina -- Sued for Taj Mahal Attack
Angelina from "Jersey Shore" has been smacked with a lawsuit over an alleged "violent assault" on a female clubgoer before a Celebrity Boxing match in NJ last month ... and now Trump is also a target.
Melissa Mayne claims she was leaving a nightclub at the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino back in December, when she crossed paths with Angelina ... who was on her way to box.
In her lawsuit, filed in NJ, Mayne claims Angelina suddenly grabbed her, struck her in the face, threw a glass in her face -- and perhaps worst of all ... snatched her cell phone and threw it across the room.
Mayne is also going after the Trump Taj -- claiming the whole thing went down in front of Trump security guards, who did not intervene or "even attempt to stop" Angelina from laying the beat down.
Mayne is suing for unspecified damages.
Angelina has told us she feels she was "set up" -- adding, "That night I feel I was provoked, taunted, and harassed into a fight."

Jay-Z -- Money, Cash, Chicken Wings
Wanna invest like Jay-Z? Then it's time to put your money where your mouth is ... the chicken wing business!
TMZ has learned Jay-Z -- along with his mother Gloria (above left) and sister Andrea -- secretly invested in a buffalo wing joint in Brooklyn called Buffalo Boss.
It's not just because wings are delicious -- Jay's first cousin Jamar White (above right) is one of the owners.
The joint is already making a positive impact in the community -- recently rewarding outstanding students at a local middle school with FREE FOOD! How awesome is that?!

Teams Get Behind Flood-Relief Effort
The limited-overs series between Australia and England will turn into one continuous flood-relief effort, as the situation worsens in parts of south-east Queensland. Twelve people have died in the floods but that number is likely to rise, and up to 20,000 homes are expected to be inundated in the state capital, Brisbane.
The Australia and England teams will be collecting donations in the crowd at the Adelaide Twenty20 international and it will be the first of many fundraising drives during the series. England's players will donate part of their match fees for the first Twenty20 to the flood relief appeal, as will their Australian counterparts, while Kevin Pietersen is keen to auction a shirt and bat he used during the Ashes to assist the flood victims, and Cricket Australia has donated $100,000 to flood relief.
Shane Warne and Darren Gough are also becoming involved, tweeting their interest in setting up a "legends" Twenty20 match to help raise funds. Cricket New South Wales will donate all gate receipts from their Big Bash match against Queensland on January 29, the day before the Brisbane ODI, which Queensland Cricket remains hopeful will go ahead.
"It's been really heartening to see how many people are so willing to stop and do something to help," Cricket Australia's spokesman Peter Young said. "Everyone is feeling the pain. It's really heartening to get calls from clubs in the community who are having sausage sizzles, and they're saying 'where do we send the money?' We have a program called Cricket Cares. What's been demonstrated today is that cricket does care.
"We decided a week or so ago that we, Commonwealth Bank and Channel Nine would run a fundraiser during the Brisbane ODI, on January 30. Given the deteriorating situation with the floods, we've decided to broaden that, so we're starting the fundraising tonight at the international T20 in Adelaide and we'll run fundraising through the matches culminating in the match at Brisbane."
The offices of Queensland Cricket in Brisbane have been sandbagged and the state's staff were working from home on Wednesday, as the city was in the grip of a major natural disaster. The Brisbane River was expected to peak at 5.5 metres on Thursday, which would be the worst flooding in the city in more than a century.

Australia Bat as Finch and Woakes Debut
Cameron White has won his first toss as Australia's Twenty20 captain and chose to bat at Adelaide. Aaron Finch, the Victoria batsman, will make his debut for Australia and Chris Woakes, the Warwickshire seamer, gets his first cap for England while Ian Bell returns for his first Twenty20 since 2008.
Woakes, who replaced the injured Stuart Broad in the England squad, made his senior debut against the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra on Monday and claimed 2 for 63 from nine overs. He has been preferred to Chris Tremlett with Michael Lumb, the specialist Twenty20 opener, is also on the sidelines.
Australia have a bowling attack full of pace with Shaun Tait, Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson primed to unleash on the batsmen. James Pattinson is the man to miss out from their 12.
England are chasing a world-record eighth consecutive Twenty20 victory having followed their World Twenty20 success with back-to-back wins against Pakistan. Australia, meanwhile, have collected four defeats on the bounce including the loss to England in Barbados during May.
Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Tim Paine (wk), 4 David Hussey, 5 Cameron White (capt), 6 Aaron Finch, 7 Steve Smith, 8 Steve O'Keefe, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Brett Lee, 11 Shaun Tait

And so, the 2010-2011 college football season comes to an end. Despite what Bill Hancock will surely tell you on Tuesday, the BCS did not "work." Here we are with an undefeated Auburn and an undefeated TCU at the end of the season, unable to take to the field and settle things like any sane sport would have them do.
You can argue whether or not TCU could beat Auburn all day because we'll never know. Auburn will be named the BCS National Champion and that will be that.
Or will it? What about the Associated Press? Last bastions of integrity, honesty and objectivity...surely if anyone will take a stand to right the egregious wrong that is the BCS, it's these muck-racking journalists. Right?
Eh...probably not.
And you can't really blame them. There's just not enough incentive to vote for TCU unfortunately. Furthermore, not enough compelling data to prove they were the best team. Say what you will of Auburn's boring win, they did beat a better opponent.
So far, I've seen a handful of AP voters proclaim their ballots and only one was even considering placing TCU at No. 1. Even then, it had more to do with how bad Auburn looked compared to how good TCU did.
The entire reason the AP got out of the BCS business is because they're here to report the news, not make it. It's going to take someone else to fix this broken system.

BCS Rankings Embraced By TCU After No. 2 Finish In The Polls
The TCU Horned Frogs finished the 2010 season undefeated, capped with a win over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl. It was, in many ways, a dream season for the Horned Frogs, despite being left out of the BCS Championship Game. For their efforts, TCU was ranked No. 2 in both the AP and Coaches' Polls on Tuesday, and will likely be in the same position when the final BCS rankings are released.
You'd think TCU would be upset about missing the opportunity to play for the national championship. The Rose Bowl is a nice consolation, but an undefeated season should earn them the right to play for the title, right? According to TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte, the Horned Frogs are still happy with the BCS, and are embracing the "imperfect system."
"But until they get a system that is going to be absolutely perfect so they can figure out a way to determine those things, we need to celebrate the system we currently have right now."
Is it surprising that TCU is fine with the system? Not at all. Consider the Horned Frogs still played in a BCS bowl and still finished the season at No. 2 in the final polls. Now consider that TCU, a former BCS-outsider, will find itself on the inside when it joins the Big East in 2012.
TCU is simply shying away from biting the hand that feeds it. In 2010, the Horned Frogs saw the financial windfall a BCS game gives, the exposure of playing in one of the biggest bowls out there and the added bonus of a win over one of the "big boys." When they become an automatic qualifier, in 2012, TCU will immediately see an increase in revenue from the BCS every year, no matter if they make a bowl or not.
Simply put, it's not embracing the system, it's keeping those that write the paychecks happy. It's the same reason you see every major conference championing the system. Money talks.

Nike Uses Oregon Ducks' BCS Championship Loss As Advertising Opportunity
The Oregon Ducks have become Nike's pet marketing project over the years. From the uniforms, branding and use of the Ducks in advertisements, Oregon is Nike's college football cornerstone. It's no surprise, then, that the shoe and apparel company used the Ducks' loss in the BCS Championship as another marketing opportunity.
The ad itself is simple, clean and well-done. It's only a picture, of a hand holding an Oregon helmet, with six words. Those words -- "Everyone loses games. Few change them" -- capture a strong emotion following the Ducks' tough loss to Auburn.
Below the jump, the ad, scheduled to run in Oregon papers on Wednesday.
Of course, it shows how much the corporate world plays a role in college football. The BCS Championship was littered with advertisements, right down to the Nike vs. Under Armor matchup on the field. Oregon has become a walking billboard for Nike, with the trademark swoosh plastered all over their uniforms. With the college football world's attention squarely on Oregon, Nike used the opportunity to cash-in.
Nike always finds a way to capture the college football world's attention -- whether it be the highlighter yellow socks the Ducks wore on Monday or this print ad following the game. In this case, however, it's less flash and more substance for the Portland-based company.

'SportsDome' Tries To Capture Rare Success For Sports Comedy On TV
The Onion, your most trusted source of fake news for the last two decades, will try its hand at TV sports comedy with the premiere of SportsDome on Comedy Central on Tuesday (starting time at 10:30/9:30 Central). It's being billed as the sports version of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, but it's more accurately described as a cut-up of ESPN's flagship SportsCenter.
Which is to say it's full of the bombast and absurdity that ESPN has made a staple of American sports fandom. The only difference is that the stories are about Bill Belichik throwing acid in Tom Brady's face and a boxer with a metal hands.
Scripted TV sports comedy hasn't had the best record of success. ESPN itself tried it a few times; Jay Mohr's Mohr Sports, an attempt at a Leno-style talk show (I mean that in the meanest way possible) with a sports bent, was dreadful and didn't last one season. Cheap Seats, ESPN's Mystery Science Theater 3000 infused Sklar brothers vehicle, lasted longer, but still didn't really manage to take sports comedy mainstream. Sports Soup, a weekly show on Versus that borrows the clips-and-jokes formula of E!'s wonderful The Soup, has similarly lasted but failed to make a wide mark.
The Onion plays a different sport entirely, and I'm almost embarrassed I mentioned Jay Mohr in this post. One of the keys will be how the hosts, Matt Walton and Matt Oberg, recreate the worst of SportsCenter smarm and cliché. The trailer above sets hopes high, as Oberg captures the Stephen Colbert faux sincerity rather well and Walton's deadpan delivery looks solid. With guest spots from Gary Payton and others, this looks promising.
SportsDome airs on Comedy Central Tuesday night at 10:30 Eastern and Pacific, 9:30 Central.

Kings To Call Power Balance Pavilion Home, Never Fall Down Again
The Sacramento Kings' ARCO Arena will be transformed into Power Balance Pavilion next month, reports SB Nation blog Sactown Royalty. You may recognize Power Balance as the snake oil salesmen who pitch rad bracelets that purport to imbue their wearers with superpowers like "awesome balance" and "sweet power." Power Balance, however, recently admitted these superpowers are nonexistent.
Essentially then, these are neat looking placebos to be used for decoration. Interestingly enough, that's just what DeMarcus Cousins, star of the Kings and wearer of Power Balance bands, had already thought of them before learning of his home court's new name.
From NBA.com reporter and all-around swell dude Jimmy Spencer:
I asked DeMarcus Cousins weeks ago if the Power Balances he wears on both wrists work. He laughed, "Hell no! These are just for decoration."
Well there you have have it; we will, however, see if Cousins changes his tune once Power Balance presents fat endorsement checks they've used to woo players like Lamar Odom, Shaquille O'Neal, Derrick Rose and Brandon Jennings.
Meanwhile, The Basketball Jones has endeavored to redesign the Kings' logo in light of the news.

Holly Madison Told to Lose Weight for 'Peepshow'
Holly Madison was 'shocked' when she was told by the producers of 'Peepshow' that she needed to lose weight for the show.
In a Radar Online interview, Madison said "I always thought I looked fine. It was a shock to me when they told me to lose weight. I just feel like I market myself as a sex symbol, I don't market myself as a fitness model or a professional dancer so I feel like the way I look is fine!"
Madison continues "I'm still up in the air over what to do. I feel like I changed my eating habits to really healthy. I've lost a few pounds. I'm still getting there and deciding if I even want to lose weight."
'Peepshow' is a burlesque show at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and Madison is the star of the show. She also stars in her own E! reality show called 'Holly's World'. Watch the interview after the jump.

'Spider-Man' Becomes Broadway's No. 1 Musical
'Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark' has become a bit of a punch-line over the last month or so, but the latest news about the Broadway adaptation of the popular Marvel comic will have Julie Taymor and her producers laughing – all the way to the bank.
The New York Times is reporting that the upstart production, plagued by bad press since a rash of accidents left several actors and crew injured, has knocked 'Wicked' from the top of its Broadway box-office perch last week, but just barely. The web-slinger edged out the revised take on 'The Wizard of Oz' by a whopping $58.
The margin might have been bigger – 'Wicked's' 1.5 million haul was based on 100% of the audience paying for tickets, while Spidey's numbers didn't factor in all the free and reduced price seats they were offering patrons while it continues its preview period. 'Wicked' had an average paid admission of $109.76, while 'Spider-Man' was slightly less at $102.86.
Could this be a portent of things to come? 'Wicked' has been one of the highest earning shows on Broadway since it debuted back in 2003, while 'Spider-Man' won't officially open until February 7th (after nearly a year of delays). The battle could be quite interesting – as 'Spider-Man' plays in a slightly larger theater (The Foxwood Theater) and boasts the name recognition of director Taymor (who helmed the stage version of 'The Lion King') and music from U2's Bono and The Edge.
However, as The Times mentions, the 'Wicked' team has more experience in figuring out how to sell the most seats at premium ($300 a pop) prices – which should keep its grosses in the stratosphere for the foreseeable future. Plus, 'Wicked' hasn't shown any signs of waning popularity even after a seven year run. It's a proven commodity.
Either way, it seems safe to say that the executives behind 'Spider-Man' have to be breathing a sigh of relief. After weeks of bad news, edging out a popular production like 'Wicked' is definitely something to crow about. Sony Films executives have to be pleased as well – as negative publicity for the musical could have a trickle down effect that compromises the earning ability of the new 'Spider-Man' movie, which is set to reboot the franchise.

'Green Hornet' Star Edward Furlong in Jail After Violating Restraining Order
Edward Furlong, who has had roles in 'Terminator 2' and most recently 'The Green Hornet', alongside Seth Rogan, has gone from the big screen to behind bars.
According to MSNBC, the actor, 33, successfully showed up in court Tuesday at 10:30 AM for a progress report regarding his probation violation from November. Furlong left threatening messages on the voicemail of his then soon-to-be ex-wife, going against the the restraining order that expressly prohibited this. This made the voicemails a direct violation of the law.
Furlong again breached the restraining order this December, when he came within 50 yards of his ex-wife. Tuesday morning's hearing was set up to address these violations. The judge, however, sent Furlong directly to jail where he now remains on $75,000 bail. His next probation violation hearing is currently set up, ironically, for this upcoming Valentine's Day.
There must not be a lot of love for Furlong from Rogan, the man behind 'Green Hornet.' Rogan starred, wrote and executive produced the big-budget action flick, so $75,000 bond for a friend would be pocket change.

Dr. Conrad Murray's Medical License Suspended, Ordered to Stand Trial Over Michael Jackson's Death
Conrad Murray, the physician accused of injecting Michael Jackson with a lethal amount of sedatives, was ordered to stand trial on a count of involuntary manslaughter. According to TMZ, Judge Michael Pastor then ordered the suspension of Murray's license as a condition to the doctor's bail.
E! Online reports that Murray has pleaded not guilty to the charge. This ruling comes only six days after more than 20 prosecution witnesses testified that Murray violated his duties as a medical professional by injecting Jackson with a surgical-grade anesthetic then failing to properly monitor him to see the effects of the drug.
One of Jackson's bodyguards, Alberto Alvarez, testified at the preliminary hearing against Murray, confirming that the doctor demonstrated "an extreme deviation from the standard of care" by administering the amounts of anesthetic he did to Jackson, then concealing the evidence and not thoroughly attempting to resuscitate the King of Pop.
Janet Jackson was outspoken about her belief that Murray was responsible for her brother's death. "He was the one that was administering," she told ABC's Robin Roberts. "I think he is responsible."

Report: 50 Cent Hauls In $8.7 Million Via Twitter Over the Weekend
50 Cent made a lot sense, financially, on Twitter over the weekend. According to the New York Post, the rapper saw the value of his 30 million shares in a penny-stock company increase by $8.7 million after sending out a series of tweets urging his 3.8 million followers to invest, which sent the price of the stock skyrocketing (relatively speaking).
The penny-stock company also owns TV Goods, a small marketing company ran by former 'Shark Tank' star Kevin Harrington. The Post even goes as far to call H&H a "money-losing venture," but once 50 Cent started telling his Twitter followers to invest, the company's stock rose from 10 cents to 39 cents.
The stock opened at 41 cents on Tuesday, reports The Huffington Post.
50 Cent "received 30 million shares of H&H in a private placement last October, including a series of warrants granting him the opportunity to cash in as the stock rises: at 15 cents, 25 cents or -- no kidding -- 50 cents," according to the New York Post.
One of the catches is that the company is selling the star's trademarked sunglasses, Sleek by 50, ensuring 50 Cent equity in the company. He also used the marketing of his sunglasses to sell the stock to his followers, according to StreetInsider.com.
"HNHI is the stock symbol for TVG, Sleek by 50 is one of the 15 products this year. If you get in technically I work for you. BIG MONEY," 50 Cent tweeted, according to screen shots on mediabistro, but later removed from his page.
Along with this and a flurry of other promotional tweets, 50 finally decided to back off toward the end of the weekend.
"Ok ok ok my friends just told me stop tweeting about HNHI so we can get all the money. Hahaha check it out its the real deal," 50 Cent reportedly tweeted.
Despite all of 50 Cent's recent success, the Post suggests H&H's long-term future doesn't look like a healthy investment since it currently sits at $3.3 million in debt and lost $1.3 million in the last quarter.

'Jersey Shore' Stars Sammi and Ronnie Call it Quits
The self-proclaimed "sweetest b*tch you'll ever meet" and the archetypal juice-head gorilla have finally called it quits. No more holding hands during couple's spray tanning sessions or fluff and fold fodder for "monogamous" couple of 'Jersey Shore.'
After dating on-and-off throughout the 'Jersey Shore's' first three seasons, according to Entertainment Tonight, Sammi Giancola and Ronnie Ortiz-Magro took to Facebook to make it official. Sammi threw the first punch when she began 'unfriending' all of Ronnie's friends from her Facebook page--although her Facebook profile shows no sign of a yay or nay 'Relationship Status.'
We all watched the roller coaster romance unfold during season one of 'Jersey Shore' --Sammi and Ronnie's first lip locking session was caught on film just minutes after Sammi had been caught in a tongue twister with the couple's roommate, The Situation. And with season two in Miami came a Miami dose of temptation--Ronnie was caught in a three way kiss while girlfriend, Sammi, was snug in bed back at their shared pad.
Although neither of these tanner than tan shore go-ers are picture perfect examples of monogamy, we did think there was a leopard print themed wedding in their future. On the show, which just kicked off its third season, Sammi and Ronnie are still very much a couple. We can't wait to see the downward spiral caught on film.

Justin Bieber Returns to 'CSI' in February
Beliebers and unsuspecting 'CSI' fans alike, get ready for Justin Bieber's triumphant return to primetime!
TV Line reports that the pint-sized pop star is set to reprise his role as Jason, a troubled teen whose brother was eventually killed by the CSIs. Smart move, CBS. This stunt casting is just in time (or should I say, Justin time) for February sweeps!
This news comes shortly after rumors that 'Glee' plans to do a Biebs-themed episode in February as well. Unfortunately, Gossip Cop reported, this isn't quite the case. wasn't quite true. Creator Ryan Murphy does confirm, however, that an episode of 'Glee' will feature a Bieber track, and in Sam, played by Chord Overstreet, will fashion his hair into a Bieber swoop in an effort to win back Quinn, played by Dianna Argon.
