Is Super Bowl XLV The Highlight Of The Year For The American Male?

According to a new study, except for Christmas, the Super Bowl is the most important day of the year for American men. Better than the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, their birthday... It's true:

A further finding in the poll shows that the Super Bowl is the second most important day in an American male's life during the year. The poll results show that men get excited for the Super Bowl more than any other day, with the exception of Christmas, and look forward to it more than their anniversary, birthday or Thanksgiving.

Who knows how accurate the polling is—it was conducted by the Penn Schoen Berland, which sounds pretty official—but this much is certain. If people really do value the Super Bowl more than Thanksgiving and 4th of July, then there's something seriously wrong here.

I mean, the Super Bowl's great, and it's the one day of the year when the entire country watches the same thing, at the same time, and collectively consumes upwards of a trillion calories' worth of three bean dip and buffalo wings. It'spretty much perfect.

But better than Thanksgiving? Better than 4th of July? Let's be serious.

I love the Super Bowl, but if Americans are going to start calling it the best day of the year, the let's be clear: It's not even the best sports holiday of the year. Half the time, the game's a complete dud. Also, it attracts a lot of people that know nothing about sports, but insist on talking throughout the game. Not always a bad thing, but depending on where you watch the game, it can get pretty excruciating to hear a bunch of people say stuff like, "I have a feeling Aaron Rodgers is going to be key for Green Bay tonight." Oh really, doctor?!

Seriously. Want to talk about the best day of a sports fan's year? That's the first two days of March Madness, and I'm already excited for 2011. This year, Charles Barkley and Jimmer Freddette will be prominently involved, so the best will be even better. Let's be serious. Even Thanksgiving and Christmas can't compete with that.

Ron Artest Plays Beach Football With Random Fans, Talks About Phil Jackson

No journalist knows Ron Artest better than FanHouse's Sam Amick, and the writer's most recent Q&A with the L.A. Lakers forward shows you why. In the talk, a sitdown held after Amick watches Artest play beach football with strangers in SoCal, the Laker digs into his continuing mental health journey, how he's adjusting to Kobe Bryant and his team in his second season in L.A and, most interestingly, what that whole Phil Jackson scrap was about.

Artest: [W]hen you've got one coach, you've got to adjust to his personality. So it was like trying to adjust, but then eventually it was, 'OK, I know your personality, but it bothers me sometimes.' You know what I'm saying? But it was real professional. Real professional.

FH: It was reported as a loud conversation. Was it loud and professional, or no?

RA: Even if it was, it was very professional. If it was yelling or no yelling, it was very professional. People can read into it, but obviously it wasn't no jawing back and forth. Obviously it wasn't no disrespect.

Artest and Jackson downplayed the reports of their shouting match back when it happened, and there have been no further instances of public aggravation ... until today's report that Ron-Ron wants out, of course. Artest's recollection of the scrap with his coach certainly says something about Ron himself, and how he wants to deal with issues. To hear that Ron-Ron is shy is both disarming and sensible. What a complex personality.

Rich Rodriguez Had To Interview Brady Hoke On National Signing Day - Video

The nature of that mysterious four-hour pre-firing meeting between Rich Rodriguez and Michigan Wolverines AD Dave Brandon has now been brought to light. In order to receive an honorable discharge from the school, Rich Rod would be required to interview his successor live on CBS Sports on National Signing Day. This also explains those rumors of Michigan nearly hiring Cormac McCarthy, an interviewee who can add a degree of difficulty.

And no, Brady Hoke didn't take it easy on Rodriguez. You'd spend three-and-a-half hours begging your boss not to make you get nagged at on national TV about Midwestern recruiting by the guy who replaced you, wouldn't you?

Hoke's using the air time to do some more recruiting, which is his job, but it can't be easy for Rodriguez to hear the guy who took his job talk about Michigan's national brand and high standards and history.

Rodriguez wonders whether the facilities investments made during his tenure helped out the first class signed during Hoke's time in Ann Arbor, like a man who hopes his wife's new husband likes the, uh, the new weight room and stadium additions.

GOALIE FIGHT! Brent Johnson Drops Rick DiPietro With One Punch

It's not every night that you get to see a goalie fight, so even though this Wednesday evening edition between Brent Johnson and Rick DiPietro was not really much of a fight, we'll take it anyway.

There are already a lot of jokes made at DiPietro's expense and there's no doubt that this will add to them quite a bit. One punched, man? Rough break. Even MSG play-by-play man Howie Rose got in on the fun, saying that "Hopefully he didn't re-injure any part of his body in the altercation." Oh, Howie.

In all seriousness, though, Johnson's one punch did seem to daze DiPietro a bit, and as Chris Botta points out, he's had a history with concussions. Let's hope nothing happened there.

Meanwhile, if you're Brent Johnson, how good is your night tonight? A shutout (although not technically because he didn't finish the game) and a one-punch take down? He was named the first star of the game and he received a rousing ovation from the CONSOL Energy Center crowd. Of course he did.

Gary Neville Announces Immediate Retirement From Football

We all knew it was coming, but that doesn’t mean it comes as any less of a shock. Gary Neville has today announced his retirement from football with immediate effect.

Shortly after Ryan Giggs had first broken into the first team, there were plenty of young players vying for a chance to join him on Manchester United—Chris Casper and Robbie Savage are two names that stick out from that crowd. But there were five who truly made the grade at United.

Between them, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers amassed well over 1,700 appearances for Manchester United, and 364 England caps (and, in the case of David Beckham, counting).

They were regulars on the team throughout the runaway successes of the late 90s and early 00s, and while Gary Neville has fallen away from the first team of late, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are still very much part of the first team picture.

They form an integral part of my football world. Football has never existed for me without these players, and I can’t imagine it without them.

I remember David Beckham first breaking through, seeing a goal he scored while on loan at Preston on the evening news.

I remember Paul Scholes making his England debut against South Africa, and cementing his place as a first choice with his two goals against Scotland.

Ryan Giggs has always been there, and although he has become less devastating and more cultured over the years, he is just as effective as he used to be.

Phil Neville is Everton captain, and a constant feature of Match of the Day. Even Nicky Butt still plies his trade in Hong Kong.

This is why the loss of Gary Neville is a milestone to myself, and a generation of Manchester United fans. He is the first bird to fly the nest.

And in many ways, he is the first player whose career I have followed from the first game to the last. I don’t quite remember Alan Shearer’s first seasons at Southampton. I don’t remember Tony Adams as a donkey, just an experienced leader at the back. Even Robbie Fowler, very recently departed, seemed established when I first started taking an interest in football.

Maybe it’s just that I didn’t follow their clubs. And after all, we’ve seen players retire before, but it finally hits home that nothing in this game lasts forever when you see it from the beginning to the end.

Gary is one of the least spectacular players that I have ever seen. He is steady, reliable and an example of professionalism. If you’re looking for highlights of his career beyond his Scouse rants, you’d do well to find one.

However, his influence on the club cannot be underestimated. With Neville’s presence at right back, that’s one position the club didn’t need to consider filling for 15 years. Behind the scenes, Ferguson trusted him with new and potential signings, and will no doubt want him to form a part of the backroom staff.

Sky Sports seems a more likely destination, with a job available given Andy Gray’s enforced departure. The media, at first glance, doesn’t seem like the most likely destination for Neville.

However, how much of his outspoken nature that has been masked by professionalism will only really be revealed when his book comes out which, now that he has retired, is presumably imminent.

Whatever is next for G Nev, we will never forget the values he espoused, and has passed on to the latest generation of United players: hard work, integrity and utter, undying loyalty to the badge.

Not loyalty shown by kissing it, or waxing lyrical about it to the paper.

By serving it for 19 years.

JaVale McGee Dunk Video: Watch Wizards Big Man Rise Up For Alley Oop Slam

JaVale McGee isn't the biggest star. The 18th pick in 2008 out of Nevada, McGee has spent his two and a half seasons in the NBA thus far toiling for the perennially struggling Washington Wizards.

But after seeing only sporadic action through his first two years, he's really come into his own this year, and been one of their few bright spots for the Wizards, averaging 9.1 points and 7.7 rebounds, while currently sitting second in the league with 2.5 blocks per game. And this is all in just 26.8 minutes per game.

McGee's already had his share of highlight reel dunks this season, which is why he was selected to participate in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest at February's All-Star Weekend. He also has a bit of a heritage to live up to, as his mother, Pamela McGee, played in the WNBA, making him the first son of a WNBA alum to play in the NBA.

Here's his latest highlight, an alley-oop throwdown off a feed from Nick Young, another nice story for Washington this season. Young has come out of seemingly nowhere to be the team's leading scorer.

What strikes me about this play is how McGee makes it look so effortless. He almost looks like he's just running through the motions on a pick-and-roll drill in practice. He took advantage of the Hornets' Aaron Gray paying him absolutely no mind, and did what any self respecting big man should do in that situation: made a beeline to the basket. Maybe this is why Gray is playing just 8.3 minutes per game.

I can hear Bill Walton in my head: "Throw it down, big man, throw it down!"

Los Angeles Lakers: Do Losses to Celtics, Heat on National TV Spell Doom?

Are the L.A Lakers out of gas? Have the champs finally begun to succumb to age and mileage like the old tire reference Jerry West used to describe them last week?

Mr. Competitive himself Kobe Bryant is having none of it, but even his legs have shown serious signs of wear and tear so far this season.

It's not as if the Lakers are the worst team in the league or anything, but when you lose games to teams like the Sacramento Kings and are completely outclassed and outplayed by your biggest rival on national television, everyone begins to panic a bit.

Not to mention your GM is coming out with the proverbial, "I'll trade someone to shake this roster up because they're under-performing," talk to light a fire under your rear end.

The Lakers looked bored and uninterested in recent losses to two of the NBA's best teams, the Heat and Celtics by double digits.

Ron Artest has completely bottomed-out, Pau Gasol hasn't given them his best and Andrew Bynum isn't the factor the team needs him to be if they are to raise the banner for a third straight title.

Phil Jackson seems ready to retire along with the aged legs of Derek Fisher.

The consensus seems to be that every championship caliber team gets lethargic in the regular season but will turn it on in the playoffs, but do the Lakers have enough left in the tank?

Additions of Matt Barnes and Steve Blake were supposed to solidify the bench and give more rest to Fisher and Bryant, but Barnes is injured and Blake's numbers are down.

L.A has the second best record in the Western conference behind the San Antonio Spurs, but look extremely vulnerable and is putting little to no fear in opponents hearts when facing them.

In other words, any of the top four seeds would have a legitimate shot against them.

Why were the Lakers beaten so thoroughly in two of their biggest games of the season? Are they that inferior to the Heat and Celtics? Here's a look into each of the losses and why the Lakers have a lot to improve on by April.

12/25/10 Loss at Staples Center to Heat, 96-80

Bryant attempted to get in LeBron James head by jawing and trash-talking him, but James took it to the bank with a triple-double and blowout of his former Olympic teammate in his gym.

Everyone knows when LeBron is actually making his three-point attempts, there is absolutely nobody on American soil who can stop him.

Unfortunately for L.A, 'Bron's three-point shooting was the least of their worries.

His ability to get into the lane easily was a bigger issue, and he continuously set up his teammates to the tune of 10 assists to go along with 27 points and 11 rebounds.

The smaller Heat controlled the paint, shot better from three and inside, had less turnovers, more blocks, steals, assists and fast-break points. Total domination.

Chris Bosh made a mockery of Artest and Lamar Odom, James outperformed Bryant and Dwyane Wade and Pau Gasol canceled each other out.

This is a game that if it was any indication of where the Lakers are headed, it won't be long before Phil can hang up his coaching suits for one last time.

Miami did everything better than L.A that night, and there honestly was no bright spot in Staples.

1/30/11 Loss at Staples Center to Celtics, 109-96

Paul Pierce has been a Laker killer for his whole career, and he stayed true to form in this game going toe-to-toe with Kobe and holding his own in a resounding win in L.A.

Bryant scored 41 points on 16-of-29 shooting including 3-of-5 from the three-point line, but totaled 0 assists and failed to get anyone else involved.

Pierce, on the other hand, scored 32 points on 11-of-18 shooting and also was 3-of-5 from three, but added three assists and five rebounds.

The undoing of L.A in this game again was lackluster defense, allowing Pierce to get to his spots too easily and giving free lanes and shots to Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

The trio of Allen, Rondo and Garnett accounted for 49 points, 20 rebounds and 24 assists while shooting a combined 22-for-33 from the field aside from Pierce's performance.

In contrast the Lakers trio of Odom, Gasol and Bynum combined for 38 points, 18 rebounds and 3 assists while shooting 14-of-27 from the field. That won't get it done.

Defensively, the Lakers are giving up too many easy shots and allowing players to get to where they are comfortable on the court without much resistance.

Despite their size advantage, they are being outworked on the glass and giving up high rebounding totals to smaller teams and second-shot opportunities.

Offensively, Bryant dominates the ball as he always has, but players are standing and watching, especially when down in the fourth quarter of games to good teams.

Gasol isn't establishing himself consistently on the low block, Artest is giving them nothing and the duo of Bynum and Odom are soft and being thrown around in the post.

The same issues that plagued the Lakers in the 2008 Finals have made a valiant return. Teams are simply out-toughing them and seem more confident.

One thing for certain is teams such as the Celtics, Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder smell blood in the City of Angels, and the Lakers need to wake up before the playoffs come or it may be a rainy May in L.A.

One cannot assume doom on the NBA champions yet, but games coming up against the Spurs, Hornets, Celtics and Magic will tell us more. If the Celtics sweep, expect more panic in California and rightfully so.

With Jerry West and Mitch Kupchak accounted for, who would be next to pour gasoline on the pile next? Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Albert Pujols: 10 Possible Moves If St. Louis Cardinals Talks Break Down

This is going to be an interesting season for the St. Louis Cardinals and their first baseman Albert Pujols. The team has a lot of money invested in a lot of players, and they have stretched their budget pretty thin as it is. Pujols is poised to hit free agency after this season, and he is going to get paid A LOT of money by someone.

Pujols has said that if a deal doesn't get done before the start of the season that he will not negotiate during the season, and will likely end up testing free agency. It's understandable why he would take that stance since he would be hounded by questions about negotiations after every game. This way the focus can stay on baseball, for a little while anyway.

The Cardinals can ill-afford to have Pujols hit free agency. They know that once he does, he will be the most coveted player in the history of free agency. That doesn't mean every team will bid on him because his price will be far too high, but almost everyone will make an inquiry. The team can't afford to lose the face of the franchise and the best player in franchise history.

It almost becomes a catch-22 because if the Cardinals pay Pujols the $25-30 million per season that it will take to keep him, they won't be able to do much of anything else. They are paying Matt Holliday a ton of money for the next six years. In fact, between the two of them they would take up nearly $50 million per season. That leaves roughly another $50 million to fill out the other 23 spots on the roster.

One way or another, it's going to be an interesting season in St. Louis.

Assuming the Cardinals and Pujols can't get a deal worked out, here are 10 teams that could make a serious play for the three-time National League MVP.

Original "Dallas" Cast Joins Show Reboot

The Ewing family is headed back to Dallas.

Three of the biggest stars from the 80s hit drama - Larry Hagman (J.R. Ewing), Patrick Duffy (Bobby Ewing), and Linda Gray (Sue Ellen Ewing) - will reprise their original roles in a planned TNT relaunch of the iconic series, reports Zap2it.

The new show will continue to focus on the trials and tribulations of the Ewing clan, a family that built its considerable wealth in the oil and cattle raising industries.

According to a press release from Turner, the new show will pick up where the old one left off.

"The modern story of Dallas focuses on the Ewing offspring - J.R. Ewing's son, John Ross, and the adopted son of Bobby and Pam Ewing, Christopher - as they clash over the future of the family dynasty," it said.

Playing John Ross will be Josh Henderson from Desperate Housewives. Jordana Brewster, who is known for her work in Fast & Furious and the TV show Chuck, will play Elena, who becomes involved in a love triangle between John and his cousin, Christopher.
No date has been set for the airing of the new show.

Playing the "Skins" Game for Laughs

In the most recent "Saturday Night Live," Andy Samberg plays the unnamed "head of programming" for MTV in a spoof of "Skins," the new teenage sex-and-drug bacchanalia that's shedding advertisers nearly as quickly as the young actor doff their clothes.
"I'm bad at my job!" Samberg declares.

MTV’s real head of programming, David Janollari, apparently couldn't be happier.

"It's always flattering when you're spoofed by 'SNL' two weeks into your series run," he told The Hollywood Reporter this week. "That's great and that really helps."

The sad thing is that he's probably right.

The show, which reportedly spurred calls for edits by MTV executives amid fears it might violate child porn laws, has inspired controversy, losing at least nine advertisers so far. Three episodes in, its latest ratings are relatively strong (1.5 million viewers), though a far cry from the premiere's 3.3 million audience.

But perhaps the strongest signs that "Skins" quickly has become part of the pop culture conversation – and might just have some staying power – are recent parodies lampooning both the show and its opponents.

The clever "SNL" skit takes aim at the advertiser exodus, re-envisioning "Skins" as a sleazy platform for product placement. The oversexed characters mix bawdy talk with pitches for modest local businesses, like a used car dealership and Kennedy Fried Chicken, whose $9 special includes "slutty mashed potatoes."

Playing far less broad is a new video on Funny or Die, which smartly pokes fun at the often-reactionary Parents Television Council's over-the-top declaration that "Skins" is “the most dangerous program that has ever been foisted on your children!”

In the video, teens are drawn to the show by the PTC's fear-mongering rhetoric.

"Thanks for telling us!" one girl declares.

"That sounds awesome!" a teen boy pipes in.

Which is exactly the reaction MTV is hoping for from young viewers.

Somewhere along the way, perhaps starting with "Jackass" and peaking with "Jersey Shore," MTV's game became leveraging controversy into ratings. In that respect, Samberg's character is wrong: Janollari does his job very well. The unfortunate byproduct is that MTV traffics too much these days in a cynical view of youth instead of tapping its power and potential of youth (more "Rock the Vote" and less Snooki would be nice).

"Skins" would be easier to take if it showed more humor, or if the attempts at laughs weren’t so forced. The characters get into potentially funny situations that could have come out of “American Pie” – the pot-filled car sinking into a lake in the premiere episode and the latest Viagra-inspired episode are a couple examples. But the bits didn't tickle us as much as they should have, possibly because it's hard at this point to care much about the characters or maybe because of the underlying sadness of the whole enterprise.

In the meantime, we'll find our laughs where we can get them. Check out these "Skins"-related parodies below:

Plot:

Sanctum follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition to the largest, most beautiful and least accessible cave system on Earth. When a tropical storm forces them deep into the caverns, they must fight raging water, deadly terrain and creeping panic as they search for an unknown escape route to the sea.

Master diver Frank McGuire (Richard Roxburgh) has explored the South Pacific's Esa-ala Caves for months. But when his exit is cut off in a flash flood, Frank’s team–including 17-year-old son Josh (Rhys Wakefield) and financier Carl Hurley (Ioan Gruffudd)–are forced to radically alter plans. With dwindling supplies, the crew must navigate an underwater labyrinth to make it out. Soon, they are confronted with the unavoidable question: Can they survive, or will they be trapped forever?

Simon Who? Tyler Re-invigorates "Idol"

There were differing opinions on how season 10 of “American Idol” would look this year, but almost everyone agreed on two points: “Idol” would sorely miss the irreplaceable Simon Cowell, and few would notice the absence of Ellen DeGeneres after her disappointing season as the fourth judge.

Both of those are correct, but Simon’s absence hasn’t been as impactful as expected because Steven Tyler has been a badly needed burst of fresh air. And that has happened because Tyler is doing what Ellen was supposed to do a year ago — add some fun to the program. Not only that, he’s doing so as a credible music talent who the contestants are listening to.

An odd choice
Nobody quite knew what to make of the Aerosmith frontman when Fox announced he was one of the new judges because this is something completely foreign to what he’s done in the past. Fans have seen him in rock concerts and the odd TV interview, but among the “Idol” audience, his actress daughter, Liv Tyler, likely began 2011 with the greater name recognition.

For a show that presumably was trying to get younger — hence the lowering of the age limit to 15 for the auditions — bringing in someone who was a music veteran when the parents of those 15-year-olds were teens themselves didn’t seem to make much sense.
What looked strange on paper, however, has been very enjoyable in practice.

Fun and credible
Ask Tyler what he brings to the table, as journalists did in a recent conference call, and he has a ready answer. “I’m just bringing my Italian on how to work a room, Aunt Phyllis honesty, 40 years as front guy in Aerosmith who’s judged the hell out of himself and kind of made a good career out of it, and with hopes to find some kids in America here for 'American Idol' to take the stage and no more, no less,” he said.

But really, what he brings is fun mixed with credibility. He’s having a good time up there, humorous and self-deprecating. But unlike with Ellen a year ago, he can’t be dismissed by naysayers because he knows better than a lot of people what it takes to succeed in the music business.

In addition, he gets along well with others. The big difference in the new judging panel has been the chemistry, and Tyler deserves a lot of credit for that.

Missing link
By the end of last season, the judging panel was riding off the rails. Simon had checked out, staring at the TV and presumably saving his best material for his next show. Ellen looked lost, like the new kid who nobody ever told what to do. Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi were blithely plodding ahead because that was where the GPS was telling them to go, no matter that the cars around them were spinning wildly. And host Ryan Seacrest was acting like a kid jumping around onstage asking, “Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”

“Idol” became must-watch TV not just because of Simon’s snark, but because of how he interacted with the other judges, particularly Paula Abdul. When she left, the show lost something. Simon’s exchanged barbs with Kara weren’t the same — she threw more elbows, he was more dismissive. And he never took Ellen seriously, so “Idol” in 2009 was akin to four strangers sharing a stage.

The surprising thing about the new judges is how quickly they seem to have bonded. They aren’t as mean as previous editions — and Randy is brutally bad when he tries to be — but it is a lot more fun. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves up there, and it shows.

“Certainly, there’s camaraderie that you haven’t seen in 10 years,” Tyler said in the conference call. “About that I’m really happy that I get along with Randy so well. J.Lo is a fox, she’s also street, she’s also got a good big heart.”

Must-see TV
Unlike Ellen, the Aerosmith frontman has nothing but confidence up on stage. While the comedian appeared to script her jokes in advance, Tyler looks like he blurts out whatever comes into his mind — whether it is appropriate or not. He’s got the edge-of-your-seat unpredictability that Simon brought to the table, with the added plus that there’s always a chance he’ll say something crazy enough to get him fired.

You had to watch Simon because he was cruel in a clever way. Sometimes he got bad press for being perceived to have gone over the line, making fun of the looks of an auditioner or commenting on the clothes or weight of various hopefuls. Rosie O’Donnell would get involved, the nightly entertainment news shows would have a few days of copy, and “Idol” took the higher ratings right to the bank.

Tyler said he isn’t going to be the harsh judge, nor does he appear to have that streak in him. He does appear to be the lecherous judge, however. He’s also the judge who drops profanities in a way that will keep the FCC on its toes all year, particularly given his fondness for rhyming “duck” with … well, use your imagination.

Particularly once the live shows start, there is a good chance that Tyler will get bleeped and hushed more in his first month than anyone else has in nine years. Every week will offer a chance that he’ll do something to get him in hot water, more than enough reason to give the post-Simon “Idol” a chance.

Blake Lively Tops 'Most Desirable' List

Blake Lively is Hollywood's "most desirable" woman, according to AskMen.com.

The popular men's website released its annual list of the "Top 99 Most Desirable Women" and the "Gossip Girl" star topped the list of beauties.

The website credits the 23-year-old's "unusual amount of dignity and composure," her performance in last year's "The Town" and her upcoming role opposite Ryan Reynolds in "Green Lantern" for landing her the coveted honor.

"Black Swan's" Mila Kunis came in second place, with "Modern Family's" Sofia Vergara taking third. Supermodel Selita Ebanks and new mom and Orlando Bloom's wife, Miranda Kerr, rounded out the top five, respectively.

Access Hollywood's own Maria Menounos nabbed #46 on the list – and she has an idea about how to amp up the competition among her fellow lovely ladies.

"I have two suggestions. The top girls should have to enter an AskMen Royal Rumble, just like in the WWE, and the winner should get an AskMen championship belt. I want the strap!" Maria said. "Thanks as always guys and thanks AskMen!"

Other Hollywood notables making the list include, Scarlett Johansson (# 7), Natalie Portman (#11), "Mad Men's" Christina Hendricks (# 21), Beyonce (# 23), Kim Kardashian (# 45), Taylor Swift (# 56), Kate Middleton (# 61), Angelina Jolie (# 67), Halle Berry (# 85), Kristen Stewart (# 90) and Minka Kelly rounding out the list in the 99 spot.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt May Be in "Dark Knight" After All

The minute he signed on for Christopher Nolan's "Inception," Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been the focus of an inordinate amount of Bat-rumors.

"He's the Riddler!"

"He's Robin!"

"He's going to take over as the Joker!" (Seriously, Google "Joseph Gordon-Levitt Heath Ledger" and tell us you couldn't see it happening).
None of them seemed to pan out - the Joker rumor, especially, was promptly shot down by Nolan himself. However, that doesn't mean Gordon-Levitt won't be heading to Gotham.

According to a Deadline report, Gordon-Levitt is in talks for an as-yet-unspecified role in "The Dark Knight Rises." The fanboy rumor machine is now in high gear, dredging up the old Riddler rumor and even suggesting that he could be Hugo Strange - a deranged, Batman-obsessed psychologist who hijacks the cowl for a brief time.

Incidentally, Strange was the role everyone was convinced Tom Hardy had locked down before Nolan revealed he would actually be playing Bane. We await word from the puppet master himself, but adding Gordon Levitt, Anne Hathaway, and Hardy to a cast that already includes Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine seriously ups the ante for "Rises."

Tara Reid: "There's Going to be a Lebowski 2"

Anyone got a spare $1,000? Because Bunny Lebowski is back.

In an interview with Hollywood.tv, actress Tara Reid - who played the kidnapped trophy wife at the heart of the Coen Brother's cult classic "The Big Lebowski" - revealed that among her upcoming projects is "Lebowski 2."

Reid goes on to say that "everyone should be coming back for that," but admits she has not actually seen a script.

Rumors have been kicking around about a Lebowski sequel for a while, but many of them seemed to be purely fan wish fulfillment rather than based on anything concrete out of the Coen camp.

The Coen Brothers, of course, just directed Jeff "El Duderino" Bridges to a Best Actor Nomination for "True Grit," so who knows what they have planned. We're dusting off our Autobahn albums in anticipation.

Akiva Goldsman Adapting Unfilmable Fairy Tale "Winter's Tale"

This is the moment fans of author Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale" have been awaiting/dreading for years.

Akiva Goldsman, the producer behind movies like "Jonah Hex," "Fair Game" and "The Losers," is making his feature-film directorial debut with his own adaptation of "Winter's Tale," reported Deadline.

The novel is a sweeping epic, an adult fairy tale set in New York City around the turn of the 20th Century. Here's the description from publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt:

New York City is subsumed in arctic winds, dark nights, and white lights, its life unfolds, for it is an extraordinary hive of the imagination, the greatest house ever built, and nothing exists that can check its vitality. One night in winter, Peter Lake--orphan and master-mechanic, attempts to rob a fortress-like mansion on the Upper West Side.

Though he thinks hte house is empty, the daughter of the house is home. Thus begins the love between Peter Lake, a middle-aged Irish burglar, and Beverly Penn, a young girl, who is dying.

Peter Lake, a simple, uneducated man, because of a love that, at first he does not fully understand, is driven to stop time and bring back the dead. His great struggle, in a city ever alight with its own energy and beseiged by unprecedented winters, is one of the most beautiful and extraordinary stories of American literature.

This synopsis is notable for a couple of reasons, like the misspellings of "the" in the second paragraph and "besieged" in the third, and for the lack of any mention of the flying horse that appears throughout the story.

This seems like an awfully ambitious project for a man who's previously only directed a handful of TV episodes, mostly "Fringe." We dearly loved this novel, but shudder to think what Hollywood would do to it with a $75 million budget.

Do yourself a favor and read the book before this thing hits theaters--figure you've got at least two years.

Zach Galifianakis Looking to Get "R.I.P.D."

We were a lot more excited about this project before "RED" came out, but there's no point in giving up now.

Zach Galifianakis is negotiations to join Ryan Reynolds in the big-screen adaptation of the comic book "RIPD" ("Rest In Peace Department") for "RED" screenwriter-turned-director Robert Schwentke, reported Variety.

Reynolds is set to star as Nick Cruz, a cop murdered in the line of duty who agrees to join God's police force in return for a chance to catch his killer. Galifianakis would play his partner, a veteran of the force dating back to the 19th century.

Schwentke was hired to direct, based largely on his adaptation of the Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, and John Malkovich geriatric action film that, unfortunately, turned out not to be half as good as its trailer.

Reynolds will next be seen June 17 in "Green Lantern" and Aug. 5 in "The Change-Up," while Galifianakis can next be seen May 26 in "The Hangover Part II," and Nov. 23 in "The Muppets."

The Original "Alice" Remembers Her Hollywood Wonderland

Six decades after Disney’s original, animated “Alice In Wonderland” debuted, the voice of Alice still marvels at her personal journey down the rabbit hole.

“I feel so blessed in my life that I played a role as a child that had a life all through the years and is still going strong,” Kathryn Beaumont tells PopcornBiz, marking “Alice’s" debut on Blu-Ray this week to celebrate the film’s 60th anniversary. “It's so timeless that today adults and children can enjoy it in the same way that they enjoyed in the '50s when it first came out.”

Beaumont was an 11-year-old, British-born child actress who’d been under contract at MGM when she was suddenly tapped to breathe life into Alice for her soft, slightly accented voice. She had to steady herself for her first meeting with the legendary Walt Disney himself, by then an iconic name to young audiences for over a decade.

“I was really in awe when I learned I was going to play Alice,” she recalls. “I was going to meet Walt Disney to sign the contracts and all of that, and I was so nervous, because obviously I knew exactly who he was. I'd seen 'Bambi' I don't know how many times and all of the films that had come out up to that point. 'This is the person that created all of this and I'm going to get to meet him.'

When she visited his office with her mother, Beaumont remembers, “he answered the door and welcomed me in. He said, 'Oh, I know you are familiar with the story of Alice, coming from England.' He said, 'Do you know what we're going to do with it?' I'm standing there blathering away – I don't know what to answer. He said 'I want to show what we're doing and the changes that we're going to make.'”

As Disney paged through the original book by Lewis Carroll and explained his studio’s take on it, Beaumont – who also later voiced to Wendy Darling in Disney’s “Peter Pan” – immediately relaxed. “I felt throughout the time that I worked there that he was a good friend. You don't always feel that kind of feeling about the head of the studio. Walt Disney related to everybody, and I soon found that out.”

“I would see it in the cafeteria,” she explains. “He'd wait in line with everyone else with his tray. He would sit in on these storyboard conferences and be very quiet back there. He just listened in and sometimes he'd have an idea, but often it was the animators that were like, 'Oh, maybe we should put a little sight gag here,' or 'What would happen if we did this?' I would sit there watching all this creativity going on, just being amazed to be a part of it. I must've had an awareness that I was watching something very special going on because I was seeing it right from the ground up.”

Beaumont provided more than just Alice’s speaking voice: she also live-modeled the character in costume for elaborate reference films, helping the animators create more lifelike and fluid movements – an early precursor to actors’ extensive green screen experience today. “There was a camera, lighting, maybe a couple of boards, no backdrop and that was it,” she laughs, recalling how she pictured in her head where “co-stars” like the Cheshire Cat would appear. “You just used your imagination throughout.”

She vividly remembers filming Alice’s tumble down the rabbit hole. “They had me fall over head first. I was somewhat high up, and then I basically fell onto a mattress – but that was just to show the falling over. Then they created a saddle that was mounted on a large doweling. My feet were in stirrups and the skirt of my dress were blown out by a very large crane so that it looked as if Alice was floating and her skirt was a parachute [to capture] the body motion that they needed to see how the character was floating down through the rabbit hole.”

For an 11-year-old, it was more play than work, she admits. “It was really so much fun!”

Geoffrey Rush on Bad Acting

Just how did an acclaimed, stage-trained, Oscar-winning actor like Geoffrey Rush approach the scenes in “The King’s Speech” in which his character proves to be a mediocre thespian? Genuine anxiety.

“Clever Mr. Tom Hooper shot that scene on the very first day,” Rush told PopcornBiz at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival of the moments when speech therapist Lionel Logue reveals that, despite youthful dabbling in the theater, he’s anything but an accomplished actor. “He made me get up in front of an entire English crew and some other English actors who all knew that I had some sort of reputation for being a Shakespearean actor in Australia. But I'd always played prose characters – I was never the verse speaker.

So I was nervous and I was bad, and he just shot it.”

Rush says one of the reasons he was drawn to play the character because, despite his contribution to a key juncture in history, Logue was an utter mystery. “He's completely unknown. If you had Googled Li\onel Logue two months ago you would've had no hits. Now you might get a couple of thousand.”

But there was an even more personal factor at work. “It was primarily because he was an Australian,” reveals the Queensland-born actor. “I'd never read an international screenplay that featured an Australian character, and in particular, a very idiosyncratic Australian character. He didn't have any of the attributes of what maybe is the archetypal, the stereotypical, the cliché of how the international might perceive our national type because everyone has one.

“You know what I mean: we all think the Canadians are Mounties or whatever or that they're terribly funny, or that the Brits always have a stiff upper lip, which is always untrue,” he says. “But this guy had so many personal quirks and I liked the fact and wanted to explore what it was like to be an elocutionist in 1930's Australia. It's so far removed from the sporting image of our country.

“And that he was a dilettante Shakespearean actor,” laughs Rush. “Again, that breaks the rules.”

James Cameron, Johnny Depp Lead List of Hollywood's Top Earners

Don't forget to thank Eywa, James.

James Cameron soared above his peers to become the richest man in Hollywood in 2010, according to a new list of film industry top-earners.

The “Avatar” writer, producer and director mined $257 million last year, mostly from his take of Pandora-related box office and DVD sales and associated licensing, Vanity Fair reported.

The mag selected Johnny Depp for the no. 2 spot on its “Top 40” list of top-earning stars, directors and producers.

The list, which excludes TV and other non-film–related income, estimated Depp’s haul for the year at $100 million.

That broke down as $40 million for “Alice in Wonderland,” $35 million for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and $20 million for “The Tourist,” the empty-seater co-starring Angelina Jolie. Depp also reportedly scored $5 million from past work.

Jolie landed at no. 21 on Vanity Fair’s list with her income pegged at $23.5 million, largely for her cut of “Tourist” dollars.

Brangelina’s other half must have been watching the kids last year, as Brad Pitt was nowhere to be found on Vanity Fair's list.

Kristen Stewart landed at no. 13 with a $28.5 million purse, making her the top-earning woman of the six who secured a spot on this year's list.

Stewart's “Twilight” colleagues Taylor Lautner (No. 9; $33.5 million) and Robert Pattinson (No. 15; $27.5 million) also scored prime real estate on the list.

Eddie Murphy snagged the bottom no. 40 marker with estimated earnings of $13 million, including a bonus for “Shrek Forever.”
Other notable filmmakers and actors who cracked Vanity Fair's "Top 40" for the Jan. 2010 to Jan. 2011 period: Steven Spielberg (no. 3; $80 million); “Inception” writer/director/producer Christopher Nolan (no. 4; $71.5 million) and star Leonardo DiCaprio (no. 5; $62 million); Will Smith (no. 11; $29 million); “Blind Side” star Sandra Bullock (no. 22; $22 million).

I Have Seen 'The Future' -- Miranda July's Deep and Artful New Film Lingers in the Mind Long after Sundance

The 2011 Sundance Film Festival is over. With the departure of rushing, movie-mad visitors swaddled in snarling shades of indie black, the streets of Park City have been returned to strolling, ski-happy visitors dressed in cheery colors of Barbie pink and snowflake white.

The Red State picketers have packed up their stupid signs. And here I am, still itching to talk about a Sundance movie that has stayed in my mind for days. Sometimes the only way to really understand and appreciate a movie — either during a multiple-titles-a-day film festival or even if it’s the only thing on your own Must List — is to wait for the dust to settle and the Tweeting circus to leave town.

I’m talking about The Future. I’ve seen The Future. I mean, I’ve seen the movie The Future, written, directed by, and co-starring Miranda July. And its pleasures and profundities expand the more I think about it. Fans like me (as well as those who don’t respond to her distinct, feminist-free-spirit style) will remember July as the maker of the 2005 Sundance (and Cannes) award-winner Me and You and Everyone We Know. July — who traded her given last name of Grossinger for something more summer-y — is a performance artist, a writer, a musician, a video artist, a web artist, and a fan of cats. At least I assume she’s a fan of cats: An injured feline named Paw-Paw narrates the future in a voice suspiciously like that of July if she were a sick kitty. We don’t see Paw-Paw’s little cat face; we do see her little front paws, one of which is bandaged.

Paw-Paw has a month to heal at the vet’s before she’s adopted by Sophie (July) and Sophie’s live-in boyfriend, Jason (Hamish Linklater, from TV’s The New Adventures of Old Christine and, even more to the point, from a lot of terrific New York stage work). Even in their mid-30s, Sophie and Jason feel time slipping away. They are not making the most of their potential! They are sobered to learn that after they adopt Paw-Paw, they will have to devote years of energy to their cat’s fragile health. They will have adult responsibilities! Suddenly, making the most of their freedom feels urgent. They decide to unplug from the Internet. Sophie will make dances. Jason will follow his bliss, although he has no idea what that bliss is. Frustration begins to cast a shadow over the daily lives of these two wan hipsters.

That’s when The Future gets really interesting. That’s also when the filmmaker gets daring: She starts to manipulate cinematic time as if it were clay, or a rubberband, or a Moebius strip, or a rolling object that can only be stopped (and only temporarily) by being pushed back with one’s brute strength. Sophie’s life splits off from Sophie’s life as we’ve seen it, and she becomes a different Sophie, someone married to someone else and living in passive suburban affluence. Jason becomes a man bereft and Sophie-less. There’s an extraordinary dance sequence involved in which July, enveloped in stretchy yellow fabric, strings together movements that are part Martha Graham, part Mummenschanz. There’s a breathtaking scene in which Linklater steps to the shore of an ocean and contemplates vastness, emptiness, eternity.

Watching this mutable, inventive, true-to-itself film, the work of an artist who delights in mixing media, I didn’t realized until I exhaled how I had been holding my breath. I’m so glad Roadside Attractions picked The Future up at Sundance, so it can be in your future, too.

Talking Black History, Slavery, the Right and Left Wings, 'Huckleberry Finn' with Cornel West, Plus Funk Music with George Clinton

Tonight, Craig Ferguson will devote his Late Late Show to Black History Month — specifically, to a long, engrossing conversation with Dr. Cornel West and music by the great George Clinton. It’s “my attempt to know my country better,” says relatively new citizen Ferguson. “One of the advantages of doing a show the network barely knows exists is that I can do whatever the hell I want.”

Ferguson and West engage in a spirited discussion of the history of black oppression and triumph in American history. (“We down in the funk now,” says West at one moment of intense conversation.) Ferguson asks West about the “difference between ‘black’ and ‘African-American,’” and the state of black life in America today.

West is direct. Ferguson asks him what he thinks of a recent reediting of Huckleberry Finn to remove the N-word. West is against it: “That’s an attempt to deodorize the funk of the text,” he says, championing Mark Twain as someone who understood what he was doing in using that word, knowing the vexed complications of writing realistic fiction.

The subject of slavery gives rise to a discussion that includes West’s observation that black people were “enslaved for almost 80 years under the U.S. Constitution. This is something our right-wing brothers, who we love and respect but are just often wrong about a lot of things, can forget.”

There is no more suitable musical guest for this show than George Clinton, who performs “One Nation Under a Groove.” Clinton’s vocal power has dimmed (two male vocalists back him up much of the time), but, he and his band dressed in military-fatigue green, Clinton makes sure the groove is driven in deep.

Don’t miss this tonight.

'Never Say Never' Promo: Professor Sitch and Pauly D Catch Bieber Fever

MTV fans, brace yourselves. In an undeniably great cross-promotional move from the MTV family, the network has solicited the coiffed kids from Jersey Shore to promote Justin Bieber’s upcoming biographical 3-D flick, Never Say Never. Over the past week, promo spots for the MTV Films-produced movie featuring Shore staples Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and DJ Pauly D have aired during their primetime lineup.

The commercials themselves, dare I say, are pretty entertaining. Clad in glasses, a scholarly scarf, a saucy open-chested dress shirt, and a characteristically slick ‘do, Uncle Sitch is rockin’ the professor look. So much so, that after the first 30 seconds, I imagine a bronzed, big-busted “student” might come in and teach him a lesson. Oddly, in enters Justin Bieber. Disappointed? Kind of.

Pauly D, on the other hand, looks like he’s starring in one of MTV’s anti-drug ads… while also channeling the Hulk.

But give them credit: Uncle Sitch and Pauly D are full-on committed. I’ll admit, I’m looking forward to potential spots from the Snookster and J-Woww.

What do you think? Did your head explode (like mine did) when you saw the Shore/Biebs collaboration? Are you craving more? Hoping for a single, maybe “Never Say Never… Except to a Grenade”?

Farrah Fawcett's Red Swimsuit on Display at Smithsonian. What Pop Culture-Centric Exhibits are You Dying to See?

CollectionSo Farrah Fawcett’s iconic red swimsuit went on display in the Smithsonian today, which would have been her 64th birthday. This is awesome for all sorts of reasons — mainly because it gives me hope that there are swimsuits out there somewhere that manage to not get tangled and destroyed in the dryer just weeks after you buy them. But, also, because nothing quite matches the glee every pop culture addict feels when they recognize some of their favorite TV/movie paraphernalia from mere feet away. It’s the best nostalgia high you could ask for, and the closest you can get to starring in the TV/movie itself. So, PopWatchers, I ask: What pop culture-centric exhibits would you love to see at the Smithsonian?

Clearly, from the photo above, you can tell two things: 1) My choices for dream exhibits, and 2) I went to my prom alone. Yes, my wish list is incredibly nerdy, but you can’t deny how incredible it would feel to see the Hatch’s hieroglyphics, the Phial of Galadriel, or Tom Servo in the flesh. (Of course, due to many on-set bloopers and errors, there have been many versions of Joel and Mike’s puppets, so we’d have to settle for the most recent, intact one. That’s okay, as long as a lock of Arch Hall, Jr.’s hair is included in the exhibit as well.) But I want to know what you’d like to see, fellow pop culture nerds. Share your dream Smithsonian exhibits in the comments below!
