Ron Reagan Adds Prose to the Account of his Search for his Father's Roots

A good book should blindside you. If it’s doing its job, a book ought to be unpredictable. As you’re reading along, minding your own business, something needs to come zinging in from left field or dropping straight out of the sky, landing in your lap.

Sorry about that spilled coffee.

I don’t mean that I yearn for zombies to interrupt “Moby Dick” or that, instead of parting forever, I want Daisy and Jay Gatsby to reunite later via Facebook. (Turns out it was just a flesh wound and he was able to drag himself, shaking and sputtering, from the pool.) I’m talking about emotional surprises, about small shifts of tone and perspective that remind us that readers should always stay on their toes.

That’s what happens in “My Father at 100” (Viking), Ron Reagan’s early valentine to his late father. A chronicle of the author’s search for Ronald Wilson Reagan’s Midwestern roots, in honor of the centennial of the president’s birth Feb. 6, 1911, the new book is just what you’d expect it to be: heartfelt, witty, suffused with the golden light of reminiscence.

The author travels to Tampico, Ill., and nearby spots, tracing his famous father’s rise from a grim childhood to wealth and fame in Hollywood and Washington, D.C. But then, just when you’ve settled into the rhythm of this pleasant, earnest and inspiring story, Ron Reagan comes up with a passage bound to startle — not because it’s rude or mean, but because it’s so casually, effortlessly beautiful.

He describes his father in the pool: “Dad had one of the most graceful and efficient swimming strokes I’ve seen this side of Mark Spitz. ... The instant his fingertips left the water, his recovering arm, instead of describing a circuitous arc on its way back to slapping the surface, would lance forward like a rattlesnake’s strike, knifing into the water at a shallow angle and pulling Dad’s body along with it. There was very little splash.”

Many memoirs have been written by children about their parents, but rarely do they depict, with such crisp economy, the experience of watching a parent’s particular motion — through water, in this case, and across space and time.

Unfortunately, “My Father 100” is getting attention for a reason other than its prose. Michael Reagan, the author’s half-brother, has expressed public outrage at Ron Reagan’s suggestion that Reagan may have already been exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimer’s before he left office.

The furor is puzzling. For one thing, the author isn’t claiming that anyone in the White House knew it and orchestrated a cover-up. For another, it’s just a guess, based on Ron Reagan’s sporadic visits.

“I’ve seen no evidence,” the author writes, “that my father (or anyone else) was aware of his medical condition while he was in office.”

Still, if the controversy brings readers to “My Father at 100,” that’s a good thing; this is a fine, eloquent story, one that sheds light on America in the early days of the 20th century, a time when, for many people, life was “not all berries and cream,” as my mother likes to describe less than ideal circumstances.

I found only two snarky sentences. Alluding to the many official celebrations of Reagan’s achievements, Ron Reagan writes: “I’m sure my mother would welcome my involvement in more official Reagan commemorations, but I prefer to recall him without the aid of eponymous aircraft carriers and interstate highways.”

The tradition of public acknowledgment of a great man is not to be sneered at; it’s a fine tribute, not the annoyance that Ron Reagan seems to feel it is.

And then, to demonstrate how debased our culture has become, the author contrasts it with his father’s purity: “He was, in some respects, too good — like a visitor from an enchanted realm where they’d never even consider inventing a Double Down sandwich or credit default swaps.”

That’s a lot of scorn to heap on a couple of chicken patties.

Mostly, though, “My Father at 100” is a nicely written, richly felt book.

No matter what you think of Reagan’s politics — or Ron Reagan’s, for that matter — you will find something to savor in this account, something upon which to reflect, something that surprises or delights you. And maybe it will help you remember how your mother or father caught a ground ball or cast a fishing line into a clear lake.

Maybe you disagreed with that parent’s worldview — as Ron Reagan certainly did with his father’s — and maybe, for you as for the author, that ends up not mattering so much, after all.

'Mr. Sunshine,' Premiering Wednesday on ABC

Matthew Perry returns to series television Wednesday night as co-creator and star of the ABC single-camera sitcom “Mr. Sunshine.” For insurance, he has brought along producer Jamie Tarses, who helped develop “Friends,” on which Perry starred for a generation, and Thomas Schlamme, who directed and produced Aaron Sorkin’s “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” Perry’s last-known television address. Not surprisingly, what they arrived at combines the extreme characters of a traditional wacky workplace comedy with the big-canvas naturalism of the Sorkin shows. As expressed in the pilot, it’s not altogether an easy fit, but it shows promise.

Perry stars as Ben Donovan, the manager of a San Diego sports arena and, as on “Friends,” is surrounded by birds of more colorful plumage, which can make him seem a bit the dull one. But he’s working hard, at the center of every scene. We regard the world not exactly from his point of view, but over his shoulder, removed enough to see how he fits into his misconception of things. Alienated and alienating, he directs people who follow his orders without being impressed while having to bend to the whims of his own boss, pill-gobbling arena owner Crystal (Allison Janney).

As the show begins, on Ben’s 40th birthday, his keeping the world at arm’s length no longer seems such a good plan. (There is a warm heart beating deep at this series’ center.) The catalyst, apart from a barrage of critical expository dialogue aimed his way by fellow characters, is the end of a “friends with benefits” affair with marketing director Alice (Andrea Anders): “I thought we were the same,” he says, disappointed. “When you told me you were emotionally broken, I believed you.” Anders was the designated human-with-feelings on ABC’s icy, dry, office-space comedy “Better Off Ted,” and she is a bright light here as well.

It’s a busy opening, including brief but satisfying guest appearances by Jorge “Hurley” Garcia and an elephant. The show is well played down to the smallest parts: Ben’s new assistant (Portia Doubleday), who had previously “set fire to a man,” does a lot with her handful of lines. As a rich woman living in her own private cloud, Janney is required at times to be impossibly ignorant of the real world, but she steers clear of one-note weirdness with fresh readings; she’s physically funny as well in small, unexpected ways. Playing her half-acknowledged idiot son, Nate Torrence also does more with his part than the part promises.

There is something about middle age that suits Perry; it is almost as if he has been waiting his whole career for those bags to be parked under his eyes. Some of his time during and after “Friends” was also taken up with drugs and drinking, and I don’t want to say that these things have seasoned him — because, kids, they are bad for you — but all in all the mileage has done him a favor, and it’s easy to read his new series’ story of delayed maturity as a rewriting of the star’s own. It’s not a bad way to begin again.

Julie Taymor's vision runs amok with her Broadway staging of 'Spider-Man'

Well, it turns out there is a valid reason the producers of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” have been keeping critics at bay. Julie Taymor’s $65-million, accident-prone production, featuring an erratic score by U2’s Bono and the Edge, is a teetering colossus that can’t find its bearings as a circus spectacle or as a rock musical.

The endlessly postponed official opening was last moved from Feb. 7 to March 15, but the battle over healthcare reform has a better shot at being resolved before the manifold problems of this frenetic Broadway jumble get fixed.

In the meantime, “Spider-Man” has been making lucrative lemonade out of all the lemons the media has thrown an embarrassing spotlight on. (The show, previewing since late November at the Foxwoods Theatre, has already beaten “Wicked” in the weekly box office tallies.) Not even a nuclear bomb detonation, as the satiric newspaper the Onion joked, can stop this juggernaut, which has survived financial crises, a spate of cast member injuries and enough bad press to sink a presidential candidate.

But the time has come to assess the work, not the hullabaloo surrounding it. So much emphasis has been placed on the technological hurdles, the notion that “Spider-Man” is trying things that have never been attempted before in a Broadway house. What sinks the show, however, has nothing to do with glitches in the special effects. To revise a handy little political catch phrase, “It’s the storytelling, stupid.” And on that front, the failure rests squarely on Taymor’s run-amok direction.

This is, after all, her vision, and it’s a vision that has been indulged with too many resources, artistic and financial. The production, lacking the clarity that’s born out of tough choices, adds when it should subtract, accelerates when it should slow down. Taymor’s inventive staging of “The Lion King” was a victory for the craft and commerce of theater alike. But the investors of “Spider-Man” have inadvertently bankrolled an artistic form of megalomania.

The book, by Taymor and Glen Berger, is an absolute farrago, setting up layers and subplots before the main narrative line has been established. A female spider figure from Classical mythology named Arachne (T.V. Carpio) has been introduced, mucking up the traditional Marvel tale. There’s even a chorus, a group of comic-book-addicted kids, who at first appear to be joshing fans of the “Spider-Man” saga but later seem to be actually inventing the tedious version unfolding before us. Apparently, they’re the creative team’s surrogates. Not that it matters much in the end. The conceit is dispensed with as the second act transforms into a video game, interrupted by high-flying shenanigans that had many in the audience nervously bowing their heads as human cartoons swooshed above them.

The biggest shame in all of this is that the leads — Reeve Carney, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Jennifer Damiano, who plays Peter’s love interest, Mary Jane — are utterly captivating. Their appealing sensitivity, however, is no match for the machine they’re trapped in. Forget about the snarling threats of the Green Goblin (Patrick Page decked in a verdant, plasticky getup that would seem obvious even for a Halloween parade) — the real villainy is Taymor’s overreaching desire to top herself.

The music is hit or miss, with three screechers for every rousing cri de coeur rock ballad. But the show is most alive when the sound that Bono and the Edge made famous connects to the emotional predicament of Peter Parker, torn between the demands of crime-fighting and the dictates of his homebody heart. The best numbers, “No More,” “Bouncing Off the Walls” (thrillingly staged as the title suggests) and “If the World Should End,” emerge from the protagonist’s or Mary Jane’s inner state of being. Too much else, unfortunately, is a cacophonous brew.

The visual world of the production is more confusing than mesmerizing. Taymor, working with a fleet of designers, seems unable to settle on a style, bounding between comic-book cut-outs and expensive sci-fi gadgetry, between ingenious thrift and galumphing glitz. It would be pointless to sort out the hodgepodge of historical eras, but, among other jarring incongruities, there’s a reference to the Internet at a newsroom so comically old school it would seem to predate Clark Kent.

Incoherence isn’t much fun to sit through. The two friends who attended Friday night’s performance with me, a fashion executive and a filmmaker, both regular New York theatergoers, were muttering to each other before the first act was done. My fashion industry friend, who bought the tickets, spent the second act savoring a martini at the bar at Sardi’s. The filmmaker stuck it out with me, hoping against hope that Taymor’s vision would somehow pull itself together. The poor guy left Foxwoods feeling as though he had been lured inside someone’s psychotic hallucination.

The aerial antics were impressive to an acrophobic like me. I feared for the actors’ safety, though, stupidly or not, I managed to persuade myself that every safety measure was being employed. But there’s a kiddie show aspect to these soaring stunts that seems at odds with a spectacle that many will find too complicated, brooding and weirdly suggestive for young children.

Who exactly is “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” for anyway? The only answer I can come up with is an audience of Julie Taymor types who care only about panoramic sensibility — a bit of slow-mo choreography here, a smattering of diabolical mask work there. Much as I enjoyed the clever shifts in perspective during the skyscraper scenes, it was hard for me to picture adults or young people yearning for a second visit, never mind critics who may feel obliged to check back in with the production when (or should I say if?) it officially opens. Nothing cures the curiosity about “Spider-Man” quite like seeing it.

Perhaps this is why the show’s long-term prospects seem to me nearly as grim as the fate of Bette Davis’ character in another work with ‘dark’ in the title — “Dark Victory.” Not since that 1939 weeper have the words “prognosis negative” seemed so apt.

'Thelma & Louise' Roar out In Front of New Blu-ray Releases

A movie that spawned two instant 20th century icons, “Thelma & Louise,” leads the latest list of titles to arrive on the high definition Blu-ray format.

“Thelma & Louise: 20th Anniversary Edition” (MGM/UA, 1991, $19.99) struck a responsive chord in millions of moviegoers, especially women, when it was released to theaters in 1991. It did an about-face on the usual buddy movie by having the “buddies” be a pair of women.

Despite the passing of two decades, the film has lost none of its punch. Geena Davis as Thelma and Susan Sarandon as Louise dominate their scenes and are an absolute pleasure to watch. Ridley Scott deftly directs the two through this fast-paced adventure drama.

Thelma Dickinson is a housewife who has a pretty routine life with her husband, Daryl (Christopher McDonald). Her friend Louise Sawyer is single and is a waitress at a local eatery. The two women, seeking a break from the monotony, decide to get away for a weekend of fishing in the mountains.

That evening on the way to their destination, they stop at a bar and dance hall where Thelma dances with a guy named Harlan. When he tries to rape Thelma in the parking lot, Louise shoots him dead. The two jump in their 1966 Thunderbird convertible, take off across the country and become fugitives on the run. It’s the start of a wild and exciting ride.

Also in the cast are Harvey Keitel as Detective Hal Slocumb who is pursuing the two in hopes of bringing them to justice and Brad Pitt as a young cowboy con who tags along with them for a while. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best actress for both stars. It won for best original screenplay (Callie Khouri). Highly recommended.

Other Blue-ray releases:

“Legends of the Fall” (Sony, 1995, $19.95): In the early 20th century, Col. William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins), a veteran of the Indian wars, becomes disgusted with the way the U.S. government is treating Native Americans. That’s when he tries to get as far away as possible, so he moves to Montana along with his three sons Tristan (Brad Pitt), Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Samuel (Henry Thomas). The colonel’s wife, Isabel, cannot take the Montana territory and moves East. This is a fine period piece that touches on many events that took place during the decade prior to World War I through the 1930s. Recommended.

“For Colored Girls” (Lionsgate, 2010, $39.99): Tyler Perry directed and produced this film and also wrote the script, which is based on Ntozake Shange’s 1975 stage play. It focuses on the interconnected lives of nine women as they make their way in the world as “women of color.” The stellar cast includes Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose and Kerry Washington. Includes a standard DVD copy of the movie. Recommended.

“You Again” (Walt Disney, 2010, $39.99): Eight years after high school, Marni (Kristan Bell) is a successful public relations exec when she returns home for her brother’s wedding. Imagine her dismay when Marni discovers that he is marrying Joanna (Odette Yustman), her old high school nemesis. Meanwhile, her mother Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes face-to-face with her own old high school rival, Ramona (Sigourney Weaver). Betty White plays the grandmother. Included is a standard DVD version of the movie.

“Paranormal Activity 2” (Paramount, 2010, $29.99): This is a prequel to 2009’s original that provided plenty of chills for frightened movie audiences. Here, the days leading up to the events of the first film are chronicled. Katie and Micah are back and again try to capture the scary supernatural presence on tape. Those who like the first one will like this one.

“It’s Kind of a Funny Story” (Universal, 2010, $39.98): Keir Gilchrist plays a troubled teenager who checks into a mental health clinic. While there, his life takes a positive spin when he meets a new romantic interest (Emma Roberts) and also a soon-to-be-friend (Zach Galifianakis). Also in the cast are Viola Davis, Laura Graham and Jim Gaffigan.

“Life as We Know It” (Warner Brothers, 2010, $35.99): Holly (Katherine Heigl) and Messer (Josh Duhamel) have a distinct dislike for each other after their first date turns into a disaster. They do have one thing in common — a love for their goddaughter Sophie. When tragedy strikes, Holly and Messer turn out to be the only people little Sophie has in the world. The two try to forget their differences in order to raise Sophie. Included is a standard DVD copy of the movie.

“Tamara Drewe” (Sony, 2010, $38.96): Gemma Arterton plays Tamara, who after several years returns to hometown Ewedown in the English countryside. It is a village of stuffed egos, petty jealousies and pompous souls. All, especially the men, do double takes when they see Tamara. Considered ugly as a teenager, she is back as a knockout beauty. Her secret to the transformation? Plastic surgery.

“Wild Target” (20th Century Fox, 2010, $29.99): Bill Nighy plays Victor, an aging assassin who is noted for his efficiency. He is hired by a gangster named Ferguson (Rupert Everett) to bump off Rose (Emily Blunt), a thief who conned the mobster out of much money. Victor falls for Rose, however, and then the two team up to take on Ferguson.

“Middle Men” (Paramount, 2009, $29.99): Luke Wilson stars as Jack Harris, a successful businessman who lives the “perfect” life with his loving family. Then two men come to him for advice on getting their Internet plans up and running. Soon Jack is reluctantly caught up in a world of mobsters and conmen. Jack not only manages to survive, but also goes on to become one of the wealthiest men of his time. Also in the cast are James Caan, Kelsey Grammer and Kevin Pollak. Supposedly inspired by a true story.

“Ong Bak 3: The Final Battle” (Magnolia, 2010, $29.98): Tony Jaa is back as the star, writer and director of this finale of this action-packed martial arts trilogy. The film begins with Tien (Jaa) sleeping with a torture collar around his head and arms. With the help of friend Pim (Primorata Dejudom), Tien escapes his bonds and then takes on the Golden-Armored King’s Guard, the mysterious killers in black and Bhuti Sangkha (Dan Chupong).

“My Soul to Take” (Universal, 2010, $39.98): Director Wes Craven returns with this tale about the “Riverton Ripper” who seems to be operating from the grave. Sixteen years ago, the Ripper vanished without a trace and many thought he was dead. On the night he disappeared, seven children were born. Now, as each one turns 16, they start turning up dead.

The Star Maker: Q&A with Music-Industry Legend Clive Davis

Year in and year out come Grammy time, perhaps the hottest ticket in town is the one granting admission to the bash hosted by veteran music mogul Clive Davis. It was the occasion he used to introduce a promising young singer and songwriter named Alicia Keys a little more than a decade ago and where he’s brought together an A-list of performers and party guests for more than three decades.

Davis, 78, is getting a special salute night from the Grammy Museum downtown for his patronage of the fledgling facility — his name now adorns the 200-seat theater where the museum hosts a regular series of performances and question-and-answer sessions with key players in the music business. On Wednesday, he’ll be the first honoree of the museum’s “Icons of the Music Industry” series. (“It’s a real thrill having the theater at the Grammy Museum named for me,” Davis said. “Day after day I see the incredible musical events that take place there, and I know it’s bringing great joy to many people.”)

Davis’ track record for identifying and nurturing new talent stretches from the 1960s and ‘70s, when he signed artists as diverse as Janis Joplin, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith and Aerosmith. In the ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s he scored megaplatinum successes with Whitney Houston and Keys, and his latest discovery, singer and songwriter BC Jean, the co-writer of Beyonce’s megahit “If I Were a Boy,” is about to release her debut album.

Los Angeles Times staff writer Randy Lewis spoke with Davis, now the chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment, as the Grammy Awards ceremony approaches on Sunday.

Q. The Grammy Awards give the industry a chance to celebrate its successes, so with that in mind, what do you think is going right in the much beleaguered business today?

A. There certainly is freshness. There is, and has been, the emergence of Lady Gaga; when you look and you see the great album Eminem did, there certainly have been some very strong records that have come out in the past year.

Q. What are the issues that concern you the most?

A. We’ve got to make sure that music is not homogenized, that music does not exist only to fit into a radio format — which is just encouraging rhythm and tempo and discouraging artistry. ... We’ve got to be careful that we not just concentrate on having hit records but that we launch the careers of stars. That’s what the business has always been for me: equal parts discovery of new artists like Whitney or Alicia, but also showing, in effect, how long a career can last. If you begin with a young Aretha or Luther (Vandross) or Rod (Stewart), if they are only allowed to make records that fit into a dance tempo radio format, you can’t do that. I would welcome more diversity. No one’s trying to stem the tide of newness and freshness, but we’ve got to make sure we’ve got the opportunity to build new artists that have careers that will last 10, 20, 30 or 40 years.

Q. Conventional wisdom says the CD is dying, the album format is passe and the individual track you can download from iTunes is king. Do you buy into that line of thinking?

A. This is certainly a very challenging and tough time for music based upon the transition to digital overall. We just have to make sure we don’t just ... convert to singles and abandon albums. We need the full panoply, we still need the great album artists, whether historically that’s been the Who or Pink Floyd or Bruce Springsteen. With some of the new artists like Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons, I’m hopeful we’re not going to be that homogenized. It’s more difficult for the unique artist to break through today, (but) I have confidence the situation will right itself. ... I have overall confidence that music is playing a vital part in more lives than ever.

Q. Your annual pre-Grammy Awards party has typically offered testament to the notion of stylistic diversity. Can you give us a sampling of who’s onboard this year?

A. I’m looking at the RSVP list and it goes from Akon to Earth, Wind & Fire and Jeff Beck, Sacha Baron Cohen, Keyshia Cole and Jermaine Dupri, Berry Gordy, Quincy Jones, Dr. Luke, Whitney Houston, Magic Johnson ... and that’s just up to the Js.

Q. Do you strive to keep upping the ante each year, and what can you tell us about what’s in store Saturday night?

A. Historically, I’ve always started my shows with a rock artist, whether we’re going back to the Foo Fighters or Velvet Revolver or Kings of Leon. I think it’s important to showcase the diversity of music and also salute and welcome new artists. ... (In the past) we’ve put together Alicia and Aretha, Lou Reed and Rod Stewart, and last year we had Fergie and Slash doing a Guns N’ Roses song. It’s the unexpected; it’s really sharing the music that I love. ... It is a healthy diversity that showcases great talent that lifts people out of their chairs all night long. That’s always been my criterion: You don’t slacken the pace. Every artist that performs, you want them to lift everyone up out of their chair. For 35 years, it seems to be working

Carlos Fuentes' 'Destiny and Desire': Mexican Myth from a Severed Head

I’m the thousandth severed head so far this year in Mexico. I’m one of fifty decapitated heads this week.

—“Destiny and Desire”

———

Josue Nadal, the colorful, poetic, and exceptionally loquacious narrator of Carlos Fuentes’ “Destiny and Desire,” is uniquely situated to tell his whole life story from beginning to end: He’s dead.

More precisely, he’s a severed head who, in the opening pages of the novel, finds himself — sans body — dumped on a beach, “lost like a coconut on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, along the Mexican coast of Guerrero.”

Fuentes’ magisterial novel of ideas is hard to describe: It’s a take on Gustave Flaubert’s “A Sentimental Education,” about the intellectual awakening of two young men.

But it’s also an exciting, and ultimately very bloody, Cain and Abel thriller.

It’s a potent political and moral critique of contemporary Mexico, which has been embroiled in a vicious four-year drug war that has led to more than 30,000 deaths (12,456 in 2010 alone).

Yet again, it’s epic mythology about the nature and destiny of Mexico.

Set in Mexico City, “Destiny and Desire” follows the intensely intertwined lives of two boys, Josue and Jerico, from the moment they meet at a high school playground.

The boys bond quickly — both are orphans, and both have a voracious appetite for all things philosophical.

Their paths diverge after college, when they enter the service of two of Mexico’s most powerful oligarchs.

Jerico becomes an underchief and enforcer for Valentin Pedro Carrera, the nation’s cynical, opportunistic, and corrupt president (an amalgamation of a handful of recent Mexican leaders), whose idea of governance begins and ends with bread and circuses.

Law school grad Josue becomes an adviser to telecommunications giant Max Monroy (who is modeled after real-life billionaire Carlos Slim). An aggressive capitalist, Monroy is as corrupt as the president, but he tries to justify his sins by promising Mexicans a prosperous future.

The two giants clash. There’s espionage, conspiracy, murder, a coup attempt. By the time the dust settles, Josue is dead at 27.

It’s hard to admire either Monroy or the president, Fuentes admits in a phone interview from New York.

The 82-year-old writer, who has published more than 20 works of fiction and criticism, including “The Death of Artemio Cruz” and “The Old Gringo,” says “Destiny and Desire” explores the nature of power and its corrupting effects.

“Machiavelli is very much present in the novel,” he says, referring to the Renaissance philosopher and politician often derided for taking traditional moral considerations out of politics. “I wanted to describe some of the possibilities of power.”

People who acquire power, Fuentes says, often get diverted from their goals, and instead find themselves “used by power” for a different end — amassing more power.

Fuentes insists that his novel isn’t an abstract dissertation, but a critique of contemporary Mexico, which he says is in desperate need of “a new social contract” built on radical economic, political, and educational reform.

“We need to finish constructing a country that is only half-built,” says Fuentes, who served as Mexico’s ambassador to France in the ‘70s. “Our infrastructure hasn’t been developed since the 1950s and 1960s.”

The flight of the country’s workforce to the United States compounds the problem, says Fuentes, who believes Mexico’s economy has become too dependent on tourism and laborers’ remittances from north of the border.

Fuentes is a disappointed idealist, says Alfred MacAdam, cochair of the Spanish and Latin American cultures department at Barnard College in New York.

“He was an optimist in his earliest writings, (including) ‘The Death of Artemio Cruz,’” published in 1962, MacAdam says.

“It was written by a ... young man who is basically infused with existentialist optimism — the whole idea that we can take control of our own destiny.”

MacAdam says that for more than 40 years, Fuentes has backed any number of promising reforms — only to be disappointed.

“Everything that he has tried to work for, everything that he has hoped would happen to Mexico, has fallen apart,” says MacAdam. “It’s been a disaster, all these ironies.”

Fuentes no longer subscribes to that notion: In “Destiny and Desire” we don’t make our destiny, but are made — and unmade — by its crushing weight. Josue and Jerico, Fuentes says, started out as soul mates but were turned against each other by forces they couldn’t control.

Fuentes’ political concerns certainly figure in “Destiny and Desire,” but they hardly exhaust the novel, which balances out the story’s pessimism with its exuberant, at times extravagant, Joycean stylistic fireworks.

Wendy B. Faris, chair of the English department at the University of Texas at Arlington, says that for some readers, the novel’s heart and soul lie not in the story but in the numerous asides, digressions, disquisitions on St. Augustine, Nietzschean declamations against Christianity, allusive flights of fancy, and biblical and historical lessons that punctuate the story.

“It seems to me that all these authors in Latin America were trying to write the next “Ulysses,’” says Faris. “Fuentes finally did it.” (Faris counts the 1987 novel “Christopher Unborn” as Fuentes’ most Joycean effort.)

Faris, whose books include the biographical study “Carlos Fuentes: Life and Work,” says that like Joyce’s work, Fuentes’ novels experiment with style and are filled “with wonderfully joyous wordplays.” Both authors, she says, “worked with underlying strata of myth.”

“Destiny and Desire’s” translator, Edith Grossman, says that Fuentes, unlike Joyce, pulls the mythical and the political together, by “unmaking one myth of Mexico, and making a new Mexican myth.”

Fuentes laughs gently at himself when asked if that’s his goal: “I’m making a whole nation’s myth on my own?”

Girl Talk is a Master of Musical Mixes

When Gregg Gillis, the biomedical engineer turned pop mash-up mad scientist known as Girl Talk, mixes together a mainstream hit like Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” with a less well-known song such as Washington, D.C., post-punk band Fugazi’s “Waiting Room,” he’s not doing it to force feed his favorite music to his fans.

He doing it because it makes sense, musically.

“I don’t want to push anything on anyone,” says Gillis.

“Part of the theme of the music is it’s OK to be into anything, and there should be no rules,” says the 29-year-old from Pittsburgh, talking on the phone from a tour stop in Raleigh, N.C. “But I am actively a fan of everything I sample. So if someone does get turned on to Fugazi because of my record, then I’m into it.”

Everything Gillis samples runs a rather mind-blowing gamut. On “All Day,” the latest Girl Talk magnum opus, there are 373 different song parts used, ranging alphabetically from a-ha’s “Take on Me” to Zapp’s “Doo Wah Ditty (Blow That Thing),” with everything from Willow Smith and Jimmy Smith and Jay-Z and Joe Jackson mixed in.

“It’s always fun for me to hear people say, ‘Wow, that’s great party music,’” Gillis says. “But I still want to make music that’s challenging to a certain degree on a compositional level. If you take a step back, it’s a 71-minute piece of music that’s linear with no repetition, really. Structurally, it’s kind of out there. I want to try out a lot of things, but still be accessible to someone who’s 50 or someone who’s 15.”

Gillis studied engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and worked doing sleep-science research in his early 20s while making experimental music on his laptop in the evening. “We worked on a lot of devices that would help you fall asleep or maintain sleep,” he says. Now, of course, Gillis concentrates on keeping listeners very much awake. “It’s the opposite, pretty much all the time,” he says. “I’m working my hardest to keep them up.”

Scientific discipline readied Gillis for the detail-oriented process of making music out of complexly interwoven digital samples.

“Music making to me is not the classic cliche of somebody sitting on the beach strumming a guitar, writing a new song after they broke up with their girlfriend,” he says. “It’s very meticulous and it involves way more trial and error. Going back to science, it’s like fine-tuning these little ideas that will then go together to build something bigger. It’s a detail-oriented process.

“The parallels are definitely there.”

Early Girl Talk albums such as “Secret Diary” (2002) and “Unstoppable” (2004) used pop samples as part of a sonic assault that was often proudly abrasive. Starting with “Night Ripper” in 2006, however, the pleasure principle began to reign supreme in his work.

That album got its title from an old skateboarding T-shirt and because he was sitting in front of a computer at his job during the day and doing the same thing making music at night.

On stage, Gillis is “a guy playing a laptop,” triggering samples in real time that may or may not correspond to how he does it on his records. “I tend to be more blunt during the live show. I lay off some of the more mellow stuff that’s on the record. I want the record to be something that people can have fun and party to, but also that they can enjoy for years to come. In the live show, I like to do reinterpretations of things and jump around a bit. The show is like a big collage of everything I’ve done and what I’m currently working on.”

“All Day” was released last fall on the Illegal Art label, and it’s the first of Girl Talk’s albums to be totally free.

It’s a gratis download without even a pay-what-you-wish option, on the Illegal Art website.

Surprisingly, Gillis has never been sued for sampling other people’s hits. He only half jokingly says that if he did have to clear all the samples on the album — from Nicki Minaj’s “Your Love” to Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out of My Life Woman” — he would have to charge “$1,000 for a copy of the album, or maybe $10,000.”

He’s never considered doing that, because it wouldn’t be much of a working business model and because he stands behind the copyright-law doctrine of Fair Use, which allows artists to reuse source material if the work they create is “transformative.”

“I believe it qualifies as Fair Use, and my label believes that and want to put it out there and push those buttons,” Gillis says. “I like making the music because I grew up with hip-hop and I like hearing samples. But I also feel that it’s not creating competition for the artists. Especially in 2011, where anytime there’s a pop song on the radio there are remixes of it and fan-made remixes of it, on YouTube and everywhere else. There’s a constant interaction. People are pretty positive about it. And they see that nobody’s going to be not buying the music of any of the artists I sample because they heard it on my album.

“If anything, it’s the opposite. I’m always hearing from kids on Facebook who are like: ‘I’ve gotten so into the Electric Light Orchestra after I heard that sample you used.’ I hear it every day. That’s the way it goes down.”

Julia Roberts Set As Evil Queen In ‘Snow White’

Julia Roberts will to need alter her signature laugh to sound a whole lot more evil!

The 43-year-old Oscar winner will star as the Queen in the upcoming untitled “Snow White” feature, based on the Brothers Grimm story, Relativity Media announced.

“Julia was our first and only choice to play the Queen,” Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh said in a statement to Access Hollywood. “She is an icon, and we know that she will make this role her own in a way that no one else could.”

According to Relativity, the story will be “a more modern tale full of comedy and adventure. After her evil stepmother kills her father and destroys the kingdom, Snow White bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarfs to reclaim what is rightly hers.”

Pre-production has already begun on the Tarsem Singh-directed movie with principal photography slated to start April.

The untitled “Snow White” feature is slated to hit the big screen on June 29, 2012, six months before Universal releases “Snow White and the Huntsman,” with Charlize Theron set to play the evil role.

Ashlee-Simpson Wentz Files For Divorce

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has filed for divorce from husband Pete Wentz, a spokesperson for the couple confirmed to Access Hollywood.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce,” the couple said in a joint statement, released by a spokesperon, to Access. “We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our number one priority. We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives.”

Ashlee filed the papers in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split from her rocker beau.

The couple began dating in 2006 and wed in May 2008.

In her filing, obtained by Access, Ashlee is seeking primary physical custody and joint legal custody of the couple’s only child, their 2-year-old son, Bronx Mowgli Wentz.

Ashlee, 26, is also requesting the court grant her spousal and child support from Pete, 31.

In the filing, Ashlee has also requested her name be restored to Ashlee Nicole Simpson, and is seeking to terminate the court’s ability to award spousal support to Pete.

Ashlee – a musician and actress – and Pete – who gained fame as a member of Fall Out Boy and has also worked as a successful music producer – tied the knot in a private ceremony held at the Simpson family home in Encino, Calif., back in 2008.

Ashlee’s father, Joe Simpson, reportedly married the couple, while her big sister, Jessica, served as maid of honor.

In October 2009, Pete opened up to People magazine about the couple’s plans for more kids.

“Everything is awesome about being a dad,” he told the mag at the time. “Eventually we want to be able to have a soccer team.”

TMZ was the first outlet to report the split.

How Laila Ali Avoids Packing On Pregnancy Pounds

Laila Ali Avoids Additional Pregnancy Weight Gain; Plans To Teach Her Kids About Grandfather Muhammed Ali

Laila Ali is gearing up for the birth of her second child – a daughter – in another month, but she’s managed to avoid some of the pitfalls of pregnancy.

“There’s no extra weight gain,” the former “Dancing with the Stars” contender told Access Hollywood Live’s Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Wednesday.

The former professional boxer said she’s managed to not put on extra pounds by paying attention to what she consumes.

“I have to watch what I eat,” she said. “I’m a big girl to begin with so I’m walking around like 205 right now. Big girl.”

On Wednesday night, Laila will be taking part in Heart Truth’s Red Dress Fashion Show, to help raise awareness for heart disease, and despite being eight-months pregnant, the Subway spokesperson is proud to be a part of the program.

“I’m looking forward to being the only pregnant girl in the fashion show with my red dress,” she laughed. “I’m gonna strut my stuff… down that runway and it’s always great to be a part of something that’s for a good cause. Heart disease is the leading killer of women and I’m just happy to be a part of this event.”

Laila is already a mom – to son Curtis Muhammad, 2 – with husband and ex-NFL star Curtis Conway, and she said her dad, boxing and civil rights hero Muhammed Ali is a big fan of his grandchildren.

“My dad has 11 grandkids and this will be his 12th — my daughter,” she told Billy and Kit. “He loves it. My son is the first grandchild that actually looks like him, so he loves it and he has his middle name — little Curtis Muhammed.”

Still just a toddler, Curtis isn’t yet aware of his grandfather’s contributions to society. Laila does plan to teach him all about grandfather Ali.

“He’s gonna know his granddad’s history and why he’s consider to be such a great man — the important things: who he is [as] a man outside of the ring,” she said. “I grew up with my dad as an example and that’s why, what it turned me into the person that I am, so I’m definitely going to use him as an example.”

Eva Longoria Tweets: ‘Starting Over Is Hard To Do’

Nearly three months after announcing her split from Tony Parker – and just a week after their divorce was finalized in court, Eva Longoria is ready to embrace the changes in her life.

“Starting over is hard to do… but life goes on,” the “Desperate Housewives” beauty Tweeted on Tuesday. “I pray for strength, courage and wisdom on my new journey.”

While the TV star and her former NBA husband announced their split back in November – with rumors swirling of alleged infidelity between Tony and a teammate’s wife (something Tony later denied) – a Texas court officially ended the couple’s three-year marriage earlier this month.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, the divorce wasn’t the only trouble for Eva. She was also recently sued for at least $4 million over her financially troubled Las Vegas nightclub, Beso.

At the time, the actress’ publicist called the suit meritless.

Troubles aside, it appears Eva, 35, may have also found a new companion to help navigate the road ahead.

She was recently spotted out multiple times getting cozy with Eduardo Cruz – the 25-year-old younger brother of actress Penelope Cruz.

Lady Gaga: Say My Name!

Say her name! No, her real name.

In a “60 Minutes” interview airing prior to the Grammys on Sunday, Lady Gaga reveals to guest correspondent Anderson Cooper that a select few people address her by her given name, Stefani Germanotta.

“Yeah, some people do,” she told Anderson. “Especially in bed.”

“You don’t want somebody yelling out ‘Lady Gaga’ in the throes of passion,” Anderson joked.

“No, that would freak me out,” the pop princess agreed.

While the 24-year-old may currently be on top of the world (with two hit albums, another on the way and six Grammy Award nominations), there are still doors that remain closed for Lady Gaga – including the entrance to her former Lower East Side New York apartment!

When Gaga and Anderson attempted to gain entry to the “Born This Way” singer’s old digs, they were denied entrance at the door by the apartment’s current resident, Emily Ting.

“I had the flu,” Emily told The New York Daily News on Tuesday when asked why she left Gaga out in the cold. “I didn’t want to have cameras inside.”

The denial was reportedly nothing personal for Emily, a 25-year-old fashion-industry worker.

“I love Anderson Cooper. He is very handsome. His hair is so gray and wonderful,” Emily told the paper. “[Lady Gaga] is great. I’ve definitely danced to some of her songs.”

Catch the full interview with Anderson and Lady Gaga when it airs on Sunday at 7 PM on CBS.
