Allen Stanford, the American billionaire who invested in cricket in the Caribbean, has been deemed unfit to stand trial on charges of running a $7 billion fraud and needs treatment for a drug addiction, a US judge has ruled.
Stanford is facing charges of fraud, money laundering and obstruction but the court has ruled him incompetent to face trial. He sustained an injury after being attacked in jail in 2009 and has become addicted to the medication he was prescribed for treating depression and anxiety.
"The court finds Stanford is incompetent to stand trial at this time based on his apparent impaired ability to rationally assist his attorneys in preparing his defense," US District Judge David Hittner wrote in his ruling in Houston, Texas.
Hittner denied a request by Stanford's lawyers to release him on bond and place him in a private treatment facility for his addiction, ordering him instead to be committed to the custody of the attorney general to "undergo medical treatment for his current impaired mental capacity" and eventually take a competency exam. The judge also recommended that Stanford be sent to a medical facility within the US Bureau of Prisons.
Stanford became famous in the cricket world after creating the Stanford 20/20 tournament in the West Indies. He then, in partnership with the ECB, launched a Stanford Super Series Twenty20 cricket competition with his All-star team from the West Indies taking on England in a $20-million winner-take-all match.
Stanford has pleaded not guilty to 21 counts of fraud, money laundering and obstruction. He faces up to 375 years in jail if convicted.

No World Cup Venues for West Indies ODIs
Sri Lanka and West Indies will play three ODIs, in the series scheduled to start on January 31, at the SSC in Colombo and not at the country's venues for the 2011 World Cup, as was planned earlier. ICC rules, according to Sri Lanka Cricket's media manager Brian Thomas, only allow teams to practice but not play international matches at World Cup venues just prior to the tournament.
"The World Cup venues for matches have been officially handed over to the ICC this month and ICC rules allow us to practice but not play until the World Cup starts," Thomas told AFP. The three ODIs will all be day games, though Hambantota and the renovated Premadasa Stadium in Colombo were earlier scheduled to host day-night matches during the series.
The ODIs were postponed to the end of January after rain had marred West Indies' Test series in Sri Lanka last year.

Tiger Woods Slips To No. 3 as Martin Kaymer Wins the Abu Dhabi Championship
Following his fantastic win in the Abu Dhabi Championship last weekend, Martin Kaymer of Germany became the second player to overtake Tiger Woods in the World Golf Rankings.
The win earned Kaymer second place in the rankings behind England’s Lee Westwood, with Tiger relegated to third and a third European, Graeme McDowell, who was third behind Kaymer in Abu Dhabi, now at No. 4 in the rankings.
Kaymer, in fact, has won four of his last eight events, including his first "major" when he took the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits last September. He is now "hot on the heels" of Westwood and will hope to stay clear of Woods in the coming weeks.
Europe in fact has six players in the top 10, with Rory McIlroy moving up to seventh place after his runner-up spot to Kaymer in Abu Dhabi. Paul Casey is in ninth place, while Luke Donald is at No. 10, but he has yet to play this year thus far.
European golf has never looked so rich, with a Ryder Cup victory last year and two "majors" won by Kaymer and McDowell (U.S. Open), plus the consistency of Westwood, particularly in the "majors," earning him the top spot in the world.
American golfers, meanwhile, seem to be going backwards, with only Woods, Steve Stricker (5), Phil Mickelson (6) and Jim Furyk (8) left in the top 10 and only Matt Kuchar (13) and Dustin Johnson (16) making the top 20.
Mickelson, who has slipped to No. 6 in the world rankings and finished down the field behind Kaymer in Abu Dhabi, will be straight out again this week in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. It is a tournament that the left-hander has won three times in the past, but he will be joined by Woods, who has won this event six times and like Mickelson is a big fan of the Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Johnson will also be in the field, as will Nick Watney, winner here in 2009, and Ben Crane, who won last year.
The highest-ranking European at Torrey Pines this week is Justin Rose, who has already played twice this year, finishing in a tie for 12th place in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and tied for 13th in the Sony Open in Hawaii last week, results that have seen him climb up to No. 29 in the world.
Most of the Europeans, in fact, will be playing in the inaugural Volvo Golf Championship in Bahrain, although these will not include Westwood, Kaymer, McDowell or McIlroy, who are all resting this weekend. The favourite to win in Bahrain therefore is Casey, closely followed by Robert Karlsson of Sweden, Ian Poulter of England and Francesco Molinari of Italy.
As for Tiger Woods, his season has yet to start, but when it does, he has every incentive to up his game in an attempt to regain his title as the world's No. 1 golfer.

Caps Shutout For Seventh Time In 1-0 Loss To Thrashers
If a writer on the Bleacher Report had predicted before the NHL season began that the Washington Capitals offense would get shutout seven times and lose the season series to the Atlanta Thrashers before the All-Star break, his right to write would have been revoked.
That is exactly the scenario that played out in the Capitals 1-0 shutout loss to the Thrashers in Atlanta this evening. Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec made 36 saves for his third shutout of the season.
Pavelec prior to this season was 1-6 against the Caps, surrendering four goals per game. This season is a much different story. Pavelec is 3-1 with two shut outs and a goals against average at 0.50. He has a save percentage of an astounding .985.
After sweeping the Thrashers last season, going 6-0, the Capitals dropped four of six to Atlanta this season.
The Capitals are now 3-4-1 on the road against the Southeast division. The Caps played their 24th road game of the season tonight in Atlanta. Washington lost for the tenth time this season away from DC, matching their road loss total from all of last season in the process.
Bruce Boudreau is clearly frustrated. Amongst the many quotes he gave in his post game news conference following the loss, ”I don’t have any answers," is the one that sticks out.
The Capitals continued their defensive and goaltending dominance, but allowing less than two goals per game when you score less than one does not amount to a win, any way you slice the pie.
The Capitals have some serious offensive issues, and right now they simply are not a very good all around hockey team.
Every team every night is going to make a mistake defensively and the mistake Caps defenseman Jeff Schultz made tonight allowed the only goal of the game. Schultz failed to control a bouncing puck in his own zone as the Thrashers Freddy Modin forced the play.
Modin found the loose puck Schultz could not control and hit a breaking Nik Antropov. Seymon Varlamov who started for the first time in four games for Washington came out and challenged, but Antropv beat him glove side.
The goal, scored 11:21 into the second period, was Antropov’s ninth of the season and his fifth point in six games.
The Capitals dominated the Thrashers in time of puck possession and shots on goal, but could not translate into goals. Washington out-shot Atlanta 36-24 in the game but Pavelec played the butterfly style to perfection.
When the Caps play around the net, they score. Tonight they were out-muscled in front of Pavelec by the big Atlanta defense. Every time the Caps headed to the net, three or four Thrashers met them.
Pavelec did not leave many scraps for Washington to bag up as he often covered up for the whistle.
Headed into the All-Star break the Capitals are clearly a tale of two different hockey teams. The Capitals are not even close to the offensive juggernaut they were last season.
Through 51 games this year, the Caps have scored a mind boggling 55 less goals than through 51 games last year.
Alex Ovechkin has 23 less goals than this time last year and while his shot selection and frequency have improved over the last few games, his accuracy has not.
It is time to admit that no matter how good the Capitals have become defensively they simply will not do any damage in the playoffs without putting the puck into the net.
Their power play is struggling as much as it has at any time in recent franchise history. Tonight the caps were 0-3 with the extra man, running their current streak over the last 27 games to a horrendous 9-88, or a paltry 10.2 percent.
The flip side is the penalty kill continued it’s dominance in losing to Atlanta. The Caps killed their only two short-handed situations, making them 24 for their last 25 on the PK.
Tonight was the Caps last game before the All-Star break and while Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green may be headed to the land of skills competition's and goal scoring, their teammates are left to ponder what happened to their skills and goal scoring in the first 51 games.
The Caps have four solid days off to think about their current offensive situation. They currently reside as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and are second in the Southeast division four points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Bruce Boudreau cannot do much to fix the problem over the four-day layoff. An NHL policy says that teams cannot begin practicing again until Monday.
The Caps are in trouble and a major offensive over haul in the game plan is necessary to fix these issues. If I were Boudreau, I would make sure my guys were on the ice at 2:01 on Monday after spending all weekend watching film.
Tonight is a loss that will stick with the Capitals, as it should. The Thrashers won for just the fifth time in 17 games and no matter how good Pavelec was in the win, there is no excuse for not scoring a goal.
This is the same Thrasher’s team that surrendered seven goals this past Sunday.
It is time to admit that they simply are not a good offensive team and need more scoring help. Being shut out seven times in 51 games with this talent is unacceptable and unless this play changes, the Caps are destined to repeat the misery of Capitals playoff pasts.

Toronto Maple Leafs: No 'Reimer' Reason for Leafs' Offensive Struggles
What had started out as a pretty good month of January for the Toronto Maple Leafs has ended on a losing note, after being beaten by the Tampa Bay Lightning for the third time this season.
James Reimer has been the reason for much of the success by the Leafs this month. After being called up for the first time in late December, he has gone 6-4 with a 2.24 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.
While Reimer played well again last night (though he was clearly having some issues with rebound control), his teammates simply didn't get much going during the first period and fell behind 2-0 by the end of the opening 20 minutes.
The Maple Leafs offense was so lethargic in the first period that they had been out-shot 17-4 by the 18-minute mark.
The Maple Leafs can score; we've all seen it. Mikhail Grabovski became the Leafs surprise first 20-goal scorer this season last week, and there is a relatively safe bet there will be at least four more. The trouble is, after the top five, there is a serious drop off.
In fact, the rest of the team combined may not score as many as the top five.
While this kind of ratio isn't specifically just a problem with the Toronto Maple Leafs, other teams find a way to make up for it, whether it be a star goalie or a super star forward.
So the question is, why don't the Leafs score more goals with more consistency?
The answer for this team isn't a balanced attack, there is too much that can go wrong. One injury or a couple of bad games can be catastrophic when you rely on a blanket offense.
What the Leafs need is a "ringer." They need a star.
This was the Toronto Maple Leafs fourth set of back-to-back games in this somewhat shortened month, so they can be forgiven some for their lack of energy, however. It has become more and more apparent that the temper tantrums displayed by Jonas Gustavsson this season may in fact be warranted.
It was refreshing to see a little emotion out of Phil Kessel last night as well, and captain Dion Phaneuf seems to be re-inventing himself a little as of late. While it would be more advantageous to the team if he scored more, it is great to see him leveling some of the teeth-rattling, board-buckling body checks that had been synonymous with the name Dion.
Everyone knows that Phil Kessel is a streaky scorer. Having been held off of the score sheet last night gave him his third seven-game goal-less streak of the season, which makes the total number of games that he hasn't put a puck in the net this season 33.
On the up side, that means that he has scored 19 goals in 16 games!
In all likelihood, James Reimer is on his way back to the Marlies this morning because of the NHL All-Star Break, though it is probably a safe bet that Brian Burke will be working to make a more permanent spot for him during that time.

MLB Top 50 List Shows Mets Have Few Legit Prospects in Minors
Many New York Mets fans are pessimistic heading into 2011.
Now I'm not saying there's not a good reason for this—payroll inflexibility, infield depth, Oliver Perez—but fans right now prefer to look to the future than the present.
Unfortunately, the Mets are just one of four teams that did not have a single prospect featured on Jonathan Mayo's Top 50 list, unveiled on Tuesday night.
Jenrry Mejia was ineligible for the list because he no longer has rookie status and Wilmer Flores came in at No. 58, on the bubble behind Rangers shortstop Jurickson Profar and pitching prospects Jarred Cosart (Phillies), Tyler Skaggs, (D-backs), Dellin Betances (Yankees) and Ethan Martin (Dodgers).
The Mets don't have the prospects or the farm system like the Rays or the Royals, but they're not playing them every day. So where do the other NL East teams rank in the list?
The Braves had three guys in the top 21, the Phillies had two prospects inside the top 30 including the fourth overall prospect Domonic Brown and the Nationals had Bryce Harper ranked at No. 3.
The Marlins, like the Mets, had no one in the top 50.
New York's biggest problem is that, other than Mejia, they have very few, if any, Major League-ready prospects. Mejia will start in Triple-A most likely, and there's a really good chance that the Mets will be fielding the same core at the position players for many years to come.
Baseball America predicts David Wright, Jose Reyes, Ike Davis, Josh Thole and Angel Pagan will all be in the Mets' starting lineup on Opening Day of 2014, with the previously-mentioned Flores in left field, Reese Havens at second and Cesar Puello in right.
Puello is seen by some scouts as a better prospect than Kirk Nieuwenhuis, while Baseball America doesn't seem to rank Lucas Duda or Fernando Martinez, both players with big league experience, that highly at all any more.
The fact is that the Mets haven't drafted particularly well over the last decade. Their high school picks have looked distinctly average, and until last year Angel Pagan, Jon Niese and Josh Thole had made little to no impact. Take that trio out of the equation and you're left with very limited success in first-rounders David Wright and Scott Kazmir.
Then consider that the Mets sent Kazmir to the Rays in exchange for Bartolome Fortunato and Victor Zambrano only to watch him rack up 55 wins over the next five seasons as a full-time starter, and things are even less rosy.
The junior college picks have been even less impressive and the four-year college picks are headlined by a pitcher with an ERA north of 5.00 (Bannister) and a batter who has 14 homers in 639 at-bats (Murphy).
With few high-level draft prospects in the system and even fewer legitimate All-Stars on the 40-man roster, 2011 does indeed predict as being tough.
That's okay though, because the Mets have the cash to bring in everybody they need to succeed, right?
I'll cheer for this team through thick and thin, but 2012 can't come soon enough.

MLB: Breaking Down Carlos Beltran, Jason Bay and the New York Mets' Outfield
One of the most disappointing moments of the Mets' 2010 season was not having a healthy outfield. Before last season even started, the Mets learned they would be without Carlos Beltran as he underwent knee surgery in January.
They did have Jason Bay, the team's biggest offseason acquisition, but after not performing for a majority of the season, he went down with a concussion in July and never returned.
Their only constant in the outfield was Angel Pagan who developed into an All-Star caliber ballplayer. This season, the Mets hope to have more certainty in their outfield with the same three guys, although where Beltran and Pagan will play is the big question coming into this spring.
Here is a complete breakdown of what to expect from the outfield trio.
Left Field: Jason Bay
Age: 32
Years: 8
Bay had as bad and disappointing a first season with a new team as possible in 2010 with the Mets. The Mets needed a leftfielder entering last season after the 2009 disaster with Daniel Murphy. New York went ahead and gave Bay a hefty contract for four years worth $66 million.
Just like David Wright in 2009, Bay struggled to get adjusted to the dimensions of Citi Field, hitting only three homeruns at home. It looked as if he was always uncomfortable at the plate, showing frustration every time a potential homerun would die at the warning track.
After being a strikeout machine and underperforming throughout the summer, Bay suffered a concussion at Dodger Stadium in late July after banging into the leftfield fence, eventually ending his first season in New York. He played in 95 games batting .259 with only 47 RBI.
Bay has said this offseason that he feels healthy and is past his post-concussion syndrome, and with one season at Citi Field under his belt, there are no excuses to not put up his pre-2010 numbers.
He must cut down on the strikeouts, be more patient and produce in the clutch if he wants to prove to the Mets that his contract wasn't a bust.
Projected numbers: .275 AVG, 21 HR, 98 RBI
Center Field: Carlos Beltran
Age: 33
Years: 11
About a year ago at this time, Beltran underwent knee surgery that apparently shocked the Mets and their front office. There was plenty of controversy surrounding him getting surgery without the team's permission and whether or not it would lead to his Mets days being over.
While the Mets were off to a good start to the season without him, there would be an update almost weekly on when exactly he was returning. Immediately after the All-Star break, Beltran returned and was placed in centerfield after speculation of whether he would move to right.
The Mets actually were eight games above .500 in the first half and trailed the Wild Card by only one game. Whether it was coincidence or not, the Mets were never the same after Beltran returned. They lost three-of-four to the eventual World Series champion San Francisco Giants and went 2-9 on their West Coast trip to start the second half of their season.
Beltran didn't look mobile or effective playing center from his first game at AT&T Park and sometimes looked lost. He would misplay trajectories and run into walls while balls would carom away, looking embarrassed for a once Gold Glove-caliber centerfielder.
This offseason, Mets new manager Terry Collins has said Beltran will most likely move to right field with Pagan moving to center.
Although Beltran wasn't looking good at his natural position, he did look good at the plate over the final month of the season. In September, he hit .321 with five home runs.
The Mets will have to use all of spring training to decide what would be best for Beltran concerning his outfield position.
If he can hit consistently, play a solid defense where he's not hurting the team and get some games off to rest, he could be a big help this season. There are a lot of big "ifs" though.
Projected numbers: .280 AVG, 24 HR, 108 RBI
Right Field: Angel Pagan
Age: 29
Years: 5
In his third season with the Mets, Pagan had his best year to-date. He solidified himself as a productive ballplayer, playing good defense, showing speed and hitting for average as well.
Even after hitting .306 the previous season, there was concern as to whether or not Pagan could stay healthy. Injuries had always been a problem for him, but he finally put together an injury-free season and played in a career-high 151 games in 2010.
Maybe the most impressive thing about his season was stealing 37 bases, putting up numbers that compared very closely to those of Jose Reyes. Along with batting .290, he hit 11 home runs and drove in 69 runs. He had more than 30 doubles, seven triples and only committed five errors in the outfield—four of those coming in centerfield interestingly enough.
He played 33 games in right field and didn't commit a single error, leading you to believe that moving him away from that position may be a negative thing. In center, he always seemed uncomfortable tracking down balls, while he looked like a Gold Glover in right. With a potential move to center for Pagan this season, he will have to work hard at becoming a better all-around outfielder.
This season, some people aren't buying that he's going to be consistent at the plate. There's no reason to think that, and perhaps he can still get better.
Collins has said he will be batting Pagan second in the batting order after Reyes. If Pagan duplicates what he did in 2010 and Reyes performs like he should if he stays healthy, that one-two punch could be the best in baseball.

Where Do the New York Jets Go From Here?
The NFL season is now over for the New York Jets. Three days removed from the agonizing loss in the AFC Championship game to the Super Bowl bound Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jets now have to get to work on preparing for the coming 2011 season.
Head coach Rex Ryan has made it abundantly clear that he believes his team will not only return to an improbable third straight AFC Championship game but will also finally move on to the Super Bowl as well. This, as many of you know, will be a lot easier said than done.
“One thing I told our players was to be proud to be a Jet. There’s a lot to be proud of. The fact that we didn’t reach our goal this year, clearly that’s a disappointment, but it doesn’t mean we had a bad season. We had a heck of a season when you look at it. How close are we to realizing our goal?
We’re pretty darn close. We’re the only team of the final four teams that went [to the conference championship round] last year, to make it back to the final four. I think that’s something for optimism, that we’re a pretty good football team. I don’t think there’s any doubt about it.
Now, we weren’t good enough to get it done, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be good enough to get it done next year. We beat some pretty good teams along the way. I think the fact that we played five road games out of the last six, including trips to Chicago, Pittsburgh twice, New England, Indianapolis, that’s about as tough as it gets.”
Many questions surround what the Jets will do with their wide receiver tandem of Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes. Both players are now unrestricted free agents as is ‘jack of all trades’ WR Brad Smith. It is highly unlikely that the team will be able to retain all three.
Holmes was brilliant this season, truly showcasing why the Jets signed him in the first place. Even with Holmes missing the first four games of the season because of his violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, he put up respectable numbers amassing 52 receptions for 746 receiving yards with 6 touchdowns and a 14.3 YPC average. When the chips were down this season, more often than not, it was Holmes who got the call and he delivered.
Edwards also had a good season and managed to put to rest the issues he has had with dropped passes in years past. With his off the field issues, you may recall Braylon was arrested for drinking and driving earlier this season, I’m not convinced that he has done enough to erase the embarrassment he put the organization through to be a priority signing.
I believe that if it comes down to a choice between one or the other, the Jets may prefer to keep Holmes over Edwards if forced to choose only one. That being said, the Jets are certainly still in need of a big, imposing wide receiver like Edwards to help stretch the field and keep opposing defenses honest.
Like Leon Washington before him, receiver Brad Smith has proven to be a dangerously versatile player who can bust out the big play at anytime. Whether he was running the Seminole offense or running back kicks, Brad Smith kept opposing teams on their toes whenever he hit the field. After putting in such an electrifying performance this season, I find it hard to believe that the Jets won’t be looking to retain his services.
Ultimately, the pending CBA situation and money will determine what the future Jets receiving corps will look like in 2011.
Putting aside the questions at wide receiver, the biggest question facing the Jets is the defense and its lacking pass rush. The Jets posted 40 sacks (tied for eighth in NFL) in the 2010 season. However, a great many of these came as a result of superior coverage in the secondary.
Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine were forced to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks using solely ingenious schemes rather than with great pass rushers. This team needs to find itself a Clay Matthews-caliber player who can get to the QB on his own rather than depending strictly on great schemes to generate sacks, knock downs and hurries.
Defensive ends Shaun Ellis and Trevor Pryce are both over 30 and Pryce has alluded to wanting to retire this off season, so the need to find a way to create pressure is paramount. Lets not forget that linebacker Jason Taylor, who was brought in as a pass rushing specialist, is very likely not to return to football again. Look for the Jets to try and address these needs in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Speaking of the draft, the Jets' troubles on the defensive line don’t stop at lacking a pure pass rusher. Run-stuffer Kris Jenkins will be 32 and has had two major knee surgeries in two years. While his return is possible, it is likely that he’ll probably have to take a hefty pay cut considering his current contract. With only seven draft picks over the last two seasons, the Jets have not used any of them on defensive linemen or linebackers. Look for that to change in this years draft.
Kicker Nick Folk, despite appearances, had a decent year as kicker, missing only nine field goals attempts—however, at least six of these should have been made. Folk seemed to wither when the game was on the line and in his hands. So much so that the Jets tried out other kickers mid-season, partially to try and find more consistency at the position as well as to perhaps help light a little fire under the feet of Folk. His missed 30-yard field goal against the Patriots in the playoffs may well have sealed his fate with both the organization and fans alike.
Punter Steve Weatherford had a good regular season and then fell apart on this team during their playoff run. Weatherford ended the regular season with a net average of 38.1 yards per punt and was able to pin opposing teams inside the twenty yard line 42 times. That number dropped to an abysmal 29.5 average during the playoffs including a woeful 22.3 average against the Patriots. Don’t be surprised to see either one of these guys gone for 2011.
Finally, there is the question of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Much has been made of the decisions he made during the AFC Championship in Pittsburgh. Should Shonn Greene been called up over LaDainian Tomlinson with the ball on the Steeler’s 2 yard line? Why was Santonio Holmes on the bench for the Jets first couple plays in their opening offensive series?
“Ask Coach Schottenheimer what happened…He’ll explain everything to you.” – Santonio Holmes in post AFC Championship game interview
I think many of you would agree that there were a few things on offense that should have gone better. But I think it is important to remember that it was Schottenheimer’s schemes and play calling that lead this team to the playoffs in the first place. Schottenheimer had to deal with a young and often inconsistent quarterback in Mark Sanchez. All in all, I believe Schottenheimer deserves more praise and less vilification.
The Jets have lots on their off season plate to address but I think this is a team that will continue to excel with each coming season and will provide plenty of positives to talk about for years to come.
Head coach Rex Ryan has made it abundantly clear that he believes his team will not only return to an improbable third straight AFC Championship game but will also finally move on to the Super Bowl as well. This, as many of you know, will be a lot easier said than done.

Tiger Woods Eager For Season to Start
For the first time in several years, Tiger Woods says, he's beginning a golf season healthy, both physically and mentally.
Woods is eager for 2011 to commence with the Farmers Insurance Open after a tumultuous 2010 that saw him go winless for the first time in his professional career. He's back at Torrey Pines as a competitor for the first time since his dramatic U.S. Open victory in a playoff over Rocco Mediate in 2008.
Although the questions still remain about his game, it has been at least four years since Woods felt this healthy to start the season, he said.
"I think it's nice to have an offseason where I wasn't in pain and recovering from something," Woods said Wednesday before his pro-am round. "I've had so many darn surgeries and everything.
"I haven't had an offseason like this. It's always been trying to somehow ... get myself to start up again," Woods said. "This was nice, to actually practice and build. It was something I haven't been able to do. That's been fun. Hopefully I can continue this."
A year ago at this time, Woods was in rehab and dealing with the fallout of his acknowledged extramarital affairs, which eventually led to a divorce. He did not return until the Masters, posted just two top-10s and decided to make changes to his swing with instructor Sean Foley.
Now he is back at Torrey Pines, where his record includes seven professional victories overall, including wins at the Farmers tournament from 2005 to 2008 and the 2008 U.S. Open he captured despite playing on a broken leg.
"In order to play this game at a high level, it helps to have a clear mind," he said. "It helps to be consistent. It helps having your life in balance. Certainly my life is much more balanced than it was in the past. That is exciting for me."
There is certainly reason for optimism for Woods, who enters the season ranked No. 3 in the world behind Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer.
Three years ago, Woods began the season with a blown-out left knee. Two years ago, he was still recovering from surgery on that knee. One year ago, his life was in shambles.
This year, he's had seven weeks to prepare since the Chevron World Challenge, where he finished second to Graeme McDowell in a playoff.
"Tiger healthy as his season begins" he said. "Trying to build on what I did last year and the end of last year. I think that's where I'm at. Sean and I have been talking about that quite a bit. We're excited about where my game has progressed over the offseason. Just get out there and play."

Iowa Players Battling Muscle Disorder
The University of Iowa said Wednesday that 13 football players had to be hospitalized this week with a muscle disorder following grueling offseason workouts that left them with extreme soreness and discolored urine.
The players have rhabdomyolysis, a stress-induced syndrome that can damage cells and cause kidney damage and even failure in severe cases, school spokesman Tom Moore said at a news conference two days after players were hospitalized at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
School officials said the players, whom they would not identify, were in stable condition and responding well to treatment, which includes bed rest and the administration of hydrating fluids. Moore said he did not know when the players would be discharged.
Director of football operations Paul Federici said the players participated in workouts that started last Thursday after they returned from winter break. Some of them complained to medical staff after a workout on Monday and symptoms included soreness throughout the body and tea-colored urine, and other players were told they should receive treatment if they had similar problems, he said.
All five Iowa strength trainers were present at these workouts, according to ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg.
A former athletic trainer, Federici said he's never seen the syndrome among student-athletes at Iowa before. He said he was still looking into the details of the workouts but said they were no different from those in previous years during what he called a critical seven-week stretch of training.
"It is strenuous. It is ambitious. The student-athletes know that," he said. "This is an anomaly. We just haven't seen this type of response before."
He said the players range from freshmen to upperclassmen and include a range of positions.
One of those hospitalized is freshman linebacker Jim Poggi of Towson, Md., whose father, Biff Poggi, said his son complained to trainers on Monday after several days of soreness. He said his son's pain started last Thursday with a lower-body workout that involved performing 100 squats in a certain amount of time and pulling a sled 100 yards. It got worse Friday after an upper-body workout, and Monday's workout "didn't go well." His urine was discolored, and the team's medical staff sent him for treatment.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, athletic director Gary Barta and team doctor Ned Amendola were all out of town on business and not at the news conference. Chris Doyle, the team's strength and conditioning coach who has worked under Ferentz all 12 years of his tenure, and other strength coaches who oversaw the workouts were not made available to reporters.
Doyle is nationally known as a leader in player development, turning sometimes scrawny freshmen into physical specimens by the time they graduate. Ferentz has said that is a key part of his program's success.
Biff Poggi, a high school football coach in Baltimore, said he was concerned about the situation but also confident his son would recover and rejoin the team. He said the hospitalized players are disappointed and eager to resume practice.
Biff Poggi said his son's treatment hasn't included dialysis, but bed rest, IV fluids and blood work to ensure there's no kidney damage.
Another player, freshman defensive lineman Carl Davis of Detroit, wrote Sunday that he couldn't walk or feel his arms after performing 100 squats and 100 bench presses, and had "a whole weekend of soreness." A third, freshman defensive back Tanner Miller of Kalona, Iowa, wrote on Tuesday that he had a "night in the hospital ... couldn't be a worse day."
The Des Moines Register confirmed through Alan DiBona that his son, freshman linebacker Shane DiBona, was among the 13 hospitalized.
Shane DiBona had described a workout last week on Facebook. "I had to squat 240 pounds 100 times and it was timed. I can't walk and I fell down the stairs ... lifes (sic) great," the Register reported.
Alan DiBona told the newspaper he had spoken with his son, and "he's doing great."
University of Iowa doctor John Stokes, a kidney specialist who is not involved in the players' treatment, said the common denominator is they had all participated in strenuous exercise, which commonly brings on the disorder in otherwise healthy young people. He said rhabdomyolysis is common among military recruits in boot camp and treatment usually focuses on trying to limit kidney damage.
"I've been at UI for 32 years and I don't think I've seen 13 people get rhabdomyolysis," he said. "It's a fairly common diagnosis. This cluster would be unusual."
Athletes routinely recover from the disorder and go back to playing, but they may change their exercise routines and ensure better hydration, he said.
Associate athletic director Fred Mims said school officials would take steps to "ensure it doesn't happen again." Mims, who is in charge of the department's compliance with NCAA rules, said the matter did not need to be reported since the workouts were allowed and routine.
He said the case is a "good lesson" for why university officials should ask players about how they are feeling after strenuous workouts. He said Iowa will also try to avoid problems after players return from school breaks and might not have kept up with fitness routines by making sure expectations are clear.

Justine Henin Retires for Second Time
Former No. 1 Justine Henin retired from tennis for a second time Wednesday, citing a lingering right elbow injury that cut short her comeback from a glittering career that included seven Grand Slam titles.
"I have undergone several tests the past few days, confirming that my elbow has sustained a lot more damage during my adventure in Australia," the 28-year-old Belgian said on her website.
She made the announcement five days after losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 7-6 (8) in the third round of the Australian Open.
"The past few weeks, there was a little bit more pain every day, but I thought my willpower would prevail. Today, the tests and my doctors are adamant," Henin said.
She was ranked No. 1 when she abruptly announced her retirement in 2008, only to return 20 months later and reach last year's Australian Open final. She partially tore a ligament in the elbow in a tumble at Wimbledon last year and hasn't been the same since.
"It is clear now that I have to accept that my career ends for good," said Henin, currently ranked No. 13. "Even if it is hard, very hard, at a time when I came back with enormous fighting spirit."
She had been slated to face the United States in a Fed Cup match along with Kim Clijsters next week.
Henin won her first Grand Slam at the French Open in 2003 and fell in love with the tournament, taking the clay title three straight years from 2005 to 2007. She also won the U.S. Open in 2003 and 2007 and the Australian Open in 2004.
Her comeback last year centered on winning a first Wimbledon title, but instead it became her downfall, crashing on her elbow in a fourth-round loss to Clijsters.
"We have all been fortunate to once again have had the opportunity to witness the beauty of her game during these many past months, and no doubt we will miss seeing her on court competing like only Justine can," WTA CEO Stacey Allaster said in a statement. "Justine Henin will go down as one of the greatest female athletes of her era."
With Henin, tennis loses a finesse player with perhaps the most lethal backhand in the game, and one-handed at that. Petite at just under 5-foot-5 and 126 pounds, she would often struggle in the power game that women's tennis has become but was an underdog people could root for.
Willpower made up for her lack of physical brawn and mediocre serve. Her stubborn determination and clenched-teeth demeanor often made it difficult for fans to love her, especially in a nation enthralled with the carefree and ever-cheerful Clijsters.
Henin acknowledged as much to the fans in her farewell letter.
"If there is one thing I could regret, it is that I protected myself too much and could not be closer to you. I hope you will forgive me," she said.

Preview of 'Bones':
The city anxiously anticipates the arrival of Heather Taffet, more notoriously known as "The Gravedigger," for her final appeal after being sentenced to death for a kidnap-murder and a series of similar coldblooded crimes. Rick Carlisle, Baron Davis have words
Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle felt no need for elaboration or explanation after his exchange of expletives and dagger stares with Clippers guard Baron Davis.
"I'm not going to talk about that," Carlisle said after the Mavs' emotionally charged 112-105 win over the Clippers. "It was ... whatever."
Mavs' J.J. Barea had another word to describe the incident that resulted in double technical fouls: "Awesome."
It began when the pesky Barea baited Davis into an offensive foul near midcourt with 8:40 remaining in the fourth quarter and momentum firmly in the Mavs' grasp. Barea sensed Davis was frustrated that he didn't get a call the previous possession, felt him push off and responded by getting breath-smelling close to Davis' bearded grill.
As intended, Davis didn't appreciate that and wildly swung his elbow. Barea hit the hardwood like he'd been run over by a tank -- or at least Blake Griffin -- and was angrily accused by Davis of flopping. Barea, by the way, didn't exactly deny that charge after the game.
"I didn't have to go down, but when you get hit like that, you go down," Barea said with a grin. "It's basketball."
Things really got heated during the ensuing timeout. Carlisle wouldn't provide any details, but Davis offered his unique perspective on the exchange.
"He basically thought I took a cheap shot on Barea," Davis said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Barea was flopping the whole night and he flopped on that play. So when Carlisle looked at me, 'That was a dirty play.'
"I was like, 'No it wasn't. This dude is flopping.' I guess he felt like he was protecting his player. So I told him to ... "
Davis acknowledged that he sprinkled in some colorful language as well. Carlisle certainly didn't back down, appearing ready to brawl with the brawny point guard, reflecting the Mavs' intensity during their defensively dominant second half.
"He started cussing me out," Davis said. "I told him, 'Go have some lunch.'"
Barea wasn't the only Mav who appreciated Carlisle's actions.
"I've got his back," big man Tyson Chandler said. "He's all right."
It didn't escalate past that point, but the coach's intensity clearly inspired the Mavs. They responded with a 10-0 run out of the break to turn a tight game into a blowout.
"Man, that's it. Guys see it and we get fired up from it," Jason Terry said. "This team has been looking for some personality. When it comes from your head coach, that's big. You know he has your back, but that's just another example of it."
Considering Carlisle's reputation for having a robotic personality and the rarity of coach-opposing player scraps, the outburst came as a pretty big surprise. At least to outsiders.
"Everybody thinks Rick is this calm-demeanor guy, no emotion," Terry said. "He shows tons of emotion and tonight was an example of that."

$900 for Super Bowl Parking Spot?
If you're lucky enough to have a ticket to Super Bowl XLV between Pittsburgh and Green Bay, then the next step is to find parking near Cowboys Stadium.
And that might be more expensive than the ticket.
According to ParkWhiz.com, there is a spot available a tenth of a mile from Cowboys Stadium going for $990 at 908 North Collins at Ticketsource.com Parking. To be fair, you would have access to a restroom, on-site security and the ability to tailgate.
The other prices range from $550 at Ballpark Valero Event Parking, which also is a tenth of a mile away, to $55 at Five Georges Parking, a mile away near Six Flags.
"This is the most expensive," ParkWhiz.com CEO Aashish Dalal said. "When you're talking about bowl games there were some that were pretty high. We did the Cotton Bowl and the Rose Bowl but none compare to what we see here."
The lot owners and operators set the price, not ParkWhiz.com. It has worked with the city of Arlington to determine the legal lots so fans have secured parking.
"In terms of customers booking reservations there's a lot of apprehension: Is it safe to reserve online?" Dalal said. "We have parking with a guarantee. ... We back up all of our parking. We pick only certain sellers that will uphold the ParkWhiz brand. That's important to us because if you're spending $900 for parking, you better be getting a spot."
The NFL offers parking -- www.sbxlv.clickandpark.com/superbowl -- at Six Flags for $71.40, plus tax and shipping for those attending the game, and will include free shuttle service to the stadium gates.
But it does not allow for tailgating.

Spartans' Korie Lucious Suspended
Korie Lucious made one too many mistakes at Michigan State.
The junior guard was suspended for the rest of the season, another blow for the slumping Spartans.
Lucious was suspended by Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, not the university, and is NCAA eligible, sources told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.
"Man did I really mess up this time...off 2 the gym I go!," Lucious posted on his Twitter account shortly before the school announced his suspension late Tuesday night.
Lucious helped the Spartans reach the Final Four in each of the past two years.
"Unfortunately, Korie Lucious displayed conduct detrimental to the program," Izzo said in a statement issued by the school. "My focus is on this team for the remainder of the season."
The news release stated that the school and basketball program would have no further comment.
An East Lansing District Court clerk said Wednesday morning there were no active cases pending against Lucious. A source confirmed to Katz that Lucious was not involved in a legal matter.
The 5-foot-11 Lucious averaged 6.5 points in 18 games this season for Michigan State (No. 25 AP), which started the season ranked No. 2 in The Associated Press poll.
The Spartans (12-7, 4-3 Big Ten) host Michigan on Thursday, hoping to snap a two-game losing streak.
Lucious made a game-winning 3-pointer against Maryland in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season, helping Michigan State reach the Final Four, and filled in well for injured star Kalin Lucas.
The Spartans are expected to keep Lucas at point guard, move freshman Keith Appling to shooting guard and have seldom-used senior Mike Kebler as a backup point guard.
Lucious, a native of Milwaukee, had trouble off the court.
Lucious pleaded guilty in September to misdemeanor reckless driving, leading to him being suspended for one exhibition game and the Spartans' season-opening victory against Eastern Michigan in November. He was also suspended for a game last season for missing class.
"I didn't live up to the standards of the program," Lucious said in the school's release. "Unfortunately, I let my teammates, my coaches, and myself down, and wish them the best for the rest of the season."
If he were to transfer he would have to sit out for the 2011-12 season and would be eligible for one season in 2012-13. Former Spartan Chris Allen is sitting out this season at Iowa State and will be eligible to play as a senior next year.
Lucious has remained in school and was reached by a reporter for greenandwhite.com while in class Wednesday and said he hasn't decided if he was going to transfer.

Did 'Bachelor' Brad Ditch a Girlfriend for the Show?
In his second turn at being 'The Bachelor,' Brad Womack has claimed over and over that he's a new man, that he's gone through years of therapy and that he's ready to settle down.
According to Life & Style magazine, he may have been on the verge of doing just that -- before he signed on for a second go at being 'The Bachelor.'
Our friends at TV Squad got an exclusive preview of the magazine's upcoming issue, which features an interview with Bettina Bell, a contestant who made the final three on Womack's first 'Bachelor' season. Bell said that she gave him a second chance last year -- only to get dumped again when he started filming the current season.
"He was pursuing me like crazy, and then out of nowhere he went MIA," she told Life & Style.
The two reconnected after Womack's infamous rejection of both DeAnna Pappas and Jenni Croft. She said they began dating in October 2009 and that he dumped her last summer. Womack previously told Life & Style, however, that he hadn't "been in a true relationship since the show ended."
The magazine cites a source who claims Womack dated, but didn't "find anyone who captured his heart. That's why he decided to do 'The Bachelor' again."
Bell said she was shocked, though. "He said it was a bad experience. He was really negative about it," she told Life & Style, while noting, "The show has 18 million viewers. It can open a lot of doors."

James Franco Gets Trapped By Mini-Fridge on 'Daily Show'
James Franco barely survived a harrowing experience on 'The Daily Show.' After having to get into character for his film '127 Hours,' where his character's arm was trapped in a rock collapse, it must have been eerie to suffer a similar calamity.
As he explained it, "I was trying to get a Fun-Size Snickers bar out of the mini-fridge, and it came down on me and I can't get my arm out." Franco immediately began to panic, preparing to sever his arm with a spork.
Jon Stewart came to the rescue, with a suggestion of using his other arm to life the mini-fridge and free himself. All was well, until Franco saw that there were Snickers in there.
The bit was as much fun for its general silliness as it was for Stewart's incredibly terrible acting. Franco, on the other hand, was so committed to his disastrous situation, we were scared for him. And now we're craving Fun-Size Snickers bars.

Outside Amici restaurant in Brentwood moments ago, Gotti called John a "tremendous actor" -- and said he was "totally confident" that John would nail the part.

'Jersey's' Sammi -- Off Hook for Punching Ronnie
She coldcocked Ronnie with a HAYMAKER on an episode of "Jersey Shore" -- but Sammi Sweetheart ain't facing the same fate as "Teen Mom" Amber Portwood ... in fact, she's off the hook completely ... for now.
It was a pretty shocking promo for this week's episode -- Sammi slugs Ronnie across the jaw during an argument ... an act of violence nearly identical to the thrashing Amber Portwood unleashed on her baby daddy just a few months ago ... the same thrashing that landed her behind bars.
As we previously reported, Amber was charged with felony domestic violence over the on-air beatdown -- but according to the Chief of Seaside Police, Sammi won't be prosecuted whatsoever ... at least until Ronnie decides to press charges.
Calls to Ronnie's rep weren't returned -- but seeing as the footage was shot last summer, we're guessing he's moved on. Meanwhile, Amber still faces three years in prison.

Kelsey's Old Wife Wants Protection From New One
Kelsey Grammer's soon-to-be ex-wife Camille Grammer is afraid she could be financially fleeced by Kelsey's soon-to-be new wife Kayte Walsh, and she wants a judge to step in and protect her.
The legal titans for both sides were in court this AM -- Neal Hersh for Camille and Lance Spiegel for Kelsey -- arguing over whether Kelsey is entitled to an immediate divorce decree, saving those pesky property issues for a later date.
The judge put the matter over until February 7. So if the judge grants the divorce on the 7th, Kelsey could still get married during the last 2 weeks of February -- which he wants.
But Hersh told the judge he's worried about Camille's cut of Kelsey's pension -- estimated at between $5 and $10 million. Even if the judge awards her a cut in the pension, Hersh is worried ... if Kelsey dies Kayte could go to the pension administrator as the grieving widow and lay claim to the proceeds.
It's unlikely Camille would lose her pension rights, but just in case Hersh wants Kelsey to cough up a $10 million bond to protect her.
To be continued on Feb. 7th.
