Antonio Cromartie rips NFL, union

First it was Tom Brady. Now Antonio Cromartie has some choice words for the NFL and the players' union regarding negotiations of a new collective bargaining agreement.

"To me, you need to stop bitching about it," the New York Jets cornerback said. "And if you wanna say you're gonna get into a room and meet and greet, and say you're gonna do what you need to do, then do it. Don't just talk about it."

Cromartie is a free agent this season, but rather than begin negotiations with the team, his managerial group is on hold due to the uncertain future of the CBA.

There was little optimism in the Jets' locker room that the union and the NFL would avert a course that seems to be headed for disaster. The CBA will officially expire on March 4 when the owners can opt to lock out the players.

"Especially when you don't get no information about nothing from the union or the owners," Cromartie said. "So to tell you the truth they need to get their damn minds together and get this [expletive] done. Stop bitching about money. Money ain't nothing. Money can be here and gone. Us players, we want to go out and play football. It's something we've been doing and we love it and enjoy it. It's our livelihood."

Jets safety Eric Smith, whose contract will expire this season, wants to return but said the labor uncertainty is weighing on him.

"It definitely does because normally you know, March 3, free agency and then you start talking to teams," Smith said. "But now we'll have no contact if we're locked out. It's kind of a waiting game. You have no idea how long it's going to last."

Kicker Nick Folk packed his cleats and said he would start working out with a target date of August in mind.

"Just in case there is training camp," Folk said.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said the potential lockout will get in the way of coaching the team as it attempts to rebound from a second straight loss in the AFC Championship Game.

"It's some scary times, you know," Ryan said. "As a coach, you want to know, you want to get your guys back as fast as you can. Let's get on to the new season. But it really is uncertain times."

Ryan challenged the players to hold each other accountable in the offseason, checking in to make sure they were working out. Lance Laury said that some of the players were making tentative plans to have group workouts, depending on where they live.

"It's not like we're just now finding out about this," Laury said. "We know what it takes to stay in shape and get ready for a season."

Linebacker Bart Scott pointed out that last spring the Jets had 100 percent attendance for the offseason workouts.

"In this locker room we have a lot of professionals and a professional is not going to let his craft slip," Scott said. "... Just because we don't have a CBA doesn't mean we're going to stop our commitment to ourselves. We know we've been knocking on that door, and were going to keep knocking until we break it open."

But preparations can't formally begin anew until players are signed, and no one was as frank in their criticism of that impasse as Cromartie.

"I mean, that's how I feel," Cromartie said. "Honestly, I don't give a damn if they get mad at me or not, but it's getting to a point where it's getting ridiculous when everything is always dealing with money. You're basically dealing with people's livelihoods. That this is what we do for our careers, and you're dealing with hundreds of thousands of other people that's in this workplace also, from the venues to everyone else.

"... I mean, you've got our head union reps acting like a [expletive]," Cromartie said. "And they've got their guys acting like them [expletive], so they just need to get their [expletive] together and get it done."

Ex-KU AD Lew Perkins to Pay Fine

Former University of Kansas Athletics Director Lew Perkins agreed Tuesday to pay a $4,000 fine to settle an ethics case over allegations that he improperly accepted a gift of exercise equipment while working for the university, but he did not acknowledge intentionally violating Kansas law.

The state Governmental Ethics Commission approved a consent decree signed by its general counsel and a Perkins attorney after a brief discussion about the amount of Perkins' fine. Some members wanted to impose the maximum of $5,000, but others noted that he'd cooperated with the commission's investigation and had himself alerted its staff to the gift and questions about its legality.

A complaint before the commission alleged that Perkins violated a state law barring state employees from accepting most gifts. He was considered a state employee because state funds paid part of his salary.

"I never acted with any intent to violate any laws or ethical rules," Perkins said in a statement issued through his attorneys. "It is time for closure and to move on, and I am glad to have this matter fully and finally resolved."

The commission agreed not to pursue the matter further. The fine is a civil penalty, but the commission could have taken the unusual step of forwarding the case to prosecutors to consider criminal charges.

"Both parties worked very hard to reach this consent decree," said commission Chairwoman Sabrina Standifer, a Wichita attorney. "It is to everyone's benefit. We didn't have to have a full-blown hearing, bring in witnesses, all of those expenses, so I think it's a good resolution."

Perkins stepped down in September, a year before he intended to retire, amid allegations that he improperly accepted perks, including the exercise equipment and free physical therapy sessions from employees of the university's sports medicine department, which is part of the athletics department.

Under Perkins' watch, several athletics department employees were implicated in an alleged scheme to steal tickets to sporting events and scalp them for profit. Perkins was not implicated in that scheme but he acknowledged poor oversight of the ticket operations.

Perkins did not attend the commission's meeting. Todd Thompson, the attorney representing him at the commission's meeting, declined to comment, but in the agreement, Perkins and the commission's staff said they wanted to avoid "potentially costly and protracted litigation."

"I regret that this matter may have detracted from the attention given to our athletes," Perkins said in his statement.

The athletics department declined to comment, and university spokesman Jack Martin would say only that, "We said at the beginning that the ethics commission was the proper venue, and they've done what they were going to do."

In the agreement, Perkins acknowledged that he accepted exercise equipment in 2005, at no cost, from Medical Outfitters, based in the Kansas City area. The equipment stayed in his home until 2009.

Last year, Perkins paid $5,000 as a rental fee on the equipment, something the commission took into account when deciding how much to fine him. The complaint did not mention Perkins' payment or other details about the gift.

Before Tuesday's commission meeting, its staff dropped one of two counts in the complaint against Perkins, dealing with the physical therapy sessions. But the evidence provided by some witnesses was not strong enough to prove the allegation, and the commission had trouble in obtaining the testimony of another, said general counsel Judy Moler.

The unrelated ticket scandal led to federal charges against six former athletics department employees and a former department consultant. Four of the former employees have pleaded guilty -- two to conspiracy and the other two to knowing about but doing nothing to stop the scheme -- and will be sentenced in March. A former employee and the consultant had change-of-plea hearings on a single conspiracy charge later this week, and a former associate athletics director is set to stand trial on a conspiracy charge in March.

Salesman Fired for Wearing Packers Tie

A car salesman in suburban Chicago has been fired for refusing to remove a Green Bay Packers tie that he wore to work the day after the Packers beat the Chicago Bears to advance to the Super Bowl.

The sentimental gesture did not impress his boss, Jerry Roberts, who fired him.

"I'm still wondering and baffled why he fired me over a tie," Stone told "SportsCenter."

Roberts said that Stone was offered five chances to take off the tie but he refused.

"If he loves the tie more than his job, he's welcome to keep wearing it -- elsewhere," Roberts said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Stone said that he was asked three times to take the tie off, once in a joking manner and another time when he was with a customer and was allowed to keep working. Finally, Roberts came out of a meeting, Stone said, and confronted him.

"Take your tie off or you're f-ing fired," Stone told ESPN.

Stone is a father of two who had worked at the dealership for a month and a half, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He said that he has been a Packers fan since he saw running back Ahman Green play.

"I liked the way he played, and I liked Brett Favre before he left, and I love Aaron Rodgers, the coaching staff -- the whole organization," he said, according to the newspaper.

Roberts told the newspaper that Stone was a good salesman who sold 14 cars last month and that no customers had complained about the tie. Stone agreed.

"I was just showing my love for my team and it was a nice, smart tie that matched my clothes -- none of the customers minded: They had a sense of humor about it," he said.

Roberts says the dealership has done promotions involving the Bears and he was afraid the tie could alienate the team's fans and make it harder to sell cars.

"We spend $20,000 a month on advertising with the Bears on WBBM during the season, and we have Bears players including Corey Wootton driving loaner vehicles, and here was a salesman openly undoing that work," Roberts said, according to the Sun-Times.

Stone told ESPN that he didn't know the dealership had a deal with the Bears. He said if Roberts had approached him professionally and explained the situation, he would have taken off the tie.

Instead, "he hollered at me and he cussed me out," Stone said.

Roberts said that Stone's timing was bad.

"If he'd worn the tie on Saturday I wouldn't have minded," he said, according to the Sun-Times. And if the Bears had won, Roberts said, "I suspect he wouldn't have worn the tie."

It looks as though Stone, like his beloved Packers, will live to fight another day. While "The Dan Patrick Show" reported that he landed a new job at a Chevy dealership Tuesday morning, Stone told ESPN that he doesn't yet have the job but does have an interview lined up.

And, according to the Tribune, Roberts said later Tuesday he would hire Stone back if he returns to work. Stone said that would not happen.

"I'm not going," said Stone, according to the Tribune.

And in spite of it all, he hasn't changed allegiance.

"I'm a Packers fan all the way," he told ESPN.

Wes Welker: 'It's Just not Worth it'

New England Patriots receiver Wes Welker told the Boston Herald that he regrets his subtle dig at New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, which got him benched for the first series of his team's playoff loss to New York.

"Yeah, sure I do," Welker told the Herald at the San Francisco Airport on his way to the Pro Bowl in Honolulu.

"I'm not going to get into any details about it, but I don't think it's worth putting coach [Bill Belichick] in that situation," he said. "So in a sense, I do regret it. ... As much as you might want to get enticed into that stuff, at the end of the day, it's just not worth it."

During his news conference leading into the Patriots' divisional playoff game against the Jets, Welker made more than 10 references to feet, a not-so-veiled reference to the foot-fetish flap involving Ryan and his wife. Prior to those remarks, Ryan had said he was making the game "personal" against Belichick and defensive back Antonio Cromartie had called Patriots quarterback Tom Brady an "ass----" as the Jets turned up the trash talk leading up to the game.

Belichick benched Welker for the team's first offensive possession of the game as punishment for the zinger, though the receiver did field a punt before New England's offense took the field for the first time.

Welker admitted to the Herald "it's not always easy to keep a lid on it.'' Still, he said, he believes in the Patriots' way of doing things.

"I like the fact we don't get caught up in all that stuff," Welker told the Herald. "At the end of the day, it's about football. That's what it's supposed to be about. That's all that matters. It's concentrating on your job and what you do, and not concentrating on the riffraff that goes with all that other stuff. It's about the team and going out there and playing good football. And not getting caught up in all the media hype. It's just not worth it."

GM: If Not Short for Derek Jeter, Center

If 36-year-old Derek Jeter doesn't last at shortstop for the length of his new four-year contract, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman thinks Jeter is best suited for a switch to center field.

"I like corner outfielders and corner infielders who have power, so for me, if he's ever gonna move, it's probably gonna be a Robin Yount situation. But we don't have to deal with it at this point," Cashman said Tuesday. "We'll deal with it when we have to."

This offseason, almost immediately after Jeter signed a three-year, $51 million deal with an option for a fourth year, speculation centered on whether the longtime Yankee could play shortstop for the life of the contract. Cashman said that he would "be surprised" if Jeter stays there for the duration, "but that doesn't mean it's not possible."

"I know he's working hard to put himself in that position," Cashman told WFAN's Mike Francesa at a breakfast appearance at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.

"Jeter's our shortstop, period," Cashman added.

Yount moved from shortstop to center field in the mid-1980s, midway through a 20-year career with the Brewers. He had won an MVP in the infield and then won another one in the outfield on the way to a Hall of Fame career.

In his 16-year career, Jeter has won five Gold Gloves at shortstop, most recently last season. That leads Cashman to say "we're not there" in thinking to move Jeter.

The Yankees have more immediate concerns heading into the coming season. The first one is the dreaded Red Sox, who signed free agent Carl Crawford and traded for Adrian Gonzalez. Francesa asked Cashman who is the better team.

"Red Sox," Cashman answered.

"We have a better bullpen," he added. "We both have comparable position players to run out there -- you might want to give us the nod, you want to give them the nod, it doesn't necessarily matter."

But Cashman admitted the Yankees need starting pitching after losing out on the Cliff Lee sweepstakes.

"They've got guys they can run one through six and I'm looking for a fourth," Cashman said of the Red Sox's rotation.

Part of the Yankees' trouble stems from the fact that Andy Pettitte is "still not in," Cashman said. The veteran left-hander is working out and hasn't retired but hasn't committed to returning to the Yankees.

"He's told us essentially that he doesn't want to pitch, but he'll tell us if he changes his mind," Cashman said on "The Michael Kay Show" on ESPN Radio in New York.

Cashman said that he isn't pressuring Pettitte and doesn't want the pitcher to return because teammates, fans or family want him to.

"His heart has got to be in it," he said.

Cashman discounted the notion of Pettitte joining the team midseason but also refused to put a time limit on a decision.

"He's not hurting us or holding us back," he told Kay. "Would we be better with him? Yes."

Cashman also said he has no plans to make right-handed power reliever Joba Chamberlain a starter despite Pettitte's status and the fact the Yanks are scrambling to fill out the rotation.

"I don't think his stuff is the same since he hurt himself in Texas [in August 2008]. ... The stuff plays up better in the 'pen," Cashman told Kay.

On offense, the Yankees replaced reserve outfielder Marcus Thames with free agent Andruw Jones, who Cashman said is similar to Thames in offensive production but slightly better on defense.

Jones looks to be the fourth outfielder behind Brett Gardner in left, Curtis Granderson in center and Nick Swisher in right. There is no plan to put Jeter in that mix or to move him to third or any other position, Cashman said.

"It's not something we have to deal with right now," he said.

Tate Forcier Mulls Next Move

Former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier said Tuesday that Miami, Washington, Baylor, San Diego State, Middle Tennessee State and New Mexico are among the FBS schools he is considering transferring to.

Forcier said he is also considering lower-division schools such as Montana, South Carolina State and Florida A&M.

"I'm really just looking for the best situation and the best opportunity," Forcier said. "I have a few schools at all levels that I'm interested in. I'm going to set up all my visits as early as possible because all the schools are already wanting me to come visit starting this weekend."

Forcier backed up Denard Robinson last season after starting ahead of him when they were both freshmen during the 2009 season. Forcier threw for 2,647 yards with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 20 career games.

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Forcier, a native of San Diego, Calif., was ruled academically ineligible to play in the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said Forcier was no longer with the program as he introduced coach Brady Hoke as Rich Rodriguez's successor.

Michael Forcier, Tate Forcier's father, said he was disappointed that Brandon said what he did.

"He could've used different words, but the new sheriff sent the media into a frenzy," Michael Forcier said last week. "Tate didn't flunk out, but he had two incomplete grades. If he was given a chance by at least one professor to make up the work and get a grade, he would be eligible."

Dwyane Wade Practices with Heat

LeBron James spent part of Tuesday's practice wearing tinted goggles in a playful show of support for Miami Heat teammate Dwyane Wade, who has worn them to combat migraine symptoms that forced him out of Saturday's game and have limited his preparation this week.

But the Heat don't need rose-colored glasses to envision a scenario in which at least two of their top three players would be available for Thursday's game against the New York Knicks.

Wade is still coping with a sensitivity to light caused by his recent migraines. But he practiced Tuesday for the second consecutive day and is expected to return to the starting lineup alongside James at Madison Square Garden. He sat out Saturday's 120-103 home victory against the Toronto Raptors.

"I'm getting better every day," said Wade, who ditched his original set of goggles for a specially designed pair that arrived in time for Tuesday's practice. "That's all I can ask for. I appreciate the support [from James].

"It would be funny if everybody comes in [for Wednesday's practice] with goggles on," Wade added. "That would be a very expensive bill for the Heat. These things ain't cheap."

The prognosis for forward Chris Bosh remains far less certain. Bosh has not practiced since he sustained a high left ankle sprain Jan. 15 in the fourth quarter of the Heat's loss at Chicago. Guard Eddie House also missed Tuesday's practice with a left ankle injury and is questionable for Thursday.

Bosh was initially listed as day to day, but his absence could stretch into a matter of weeks.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Bosh would have to go through a practice before he would be allowed to play -- a requirement that has typically been applied to the Heat's entire roster. If that standard holds, Bosh could miss at least the next four games.

The Heat (31-13) have back-to-back games scheduled, with Thursday's stop in New York followed by Friday's home game against Detroit. Miami is not expected to practice Saturday and starts another back-to-back set with games Sunday in Oklahoma City and Monday at home against Cleveland.

For the first time since Bosh was injured, Spoelstra sounded less than optimistic about his status.

"Chris is still getting better, but he's not ready to run full speed and certainly not ready to practice," Spoelstra said Tuesday. "I don't have any new news on his front. He's just doing all of his treatment, all the work that he can. I don't have a timetable for him. All I can tell you is he's getting better."

Spoelstra said the team wouldn't be able to gauge Bosh's return until he's able to run full speed and move laterally. He also said Bosh's high ankle sprain is not like the one sustained last summer by point guard Mario Chalmers, who was in a cast for six weeks and did not resume normal basketball activities for nearly two months.

"[Bosh] doesn't have the swelling you normally see, certainly not like Mario went through," Spoelstra said. "You can already see [Bosh is] walking around."

Bosh was on the court at the end of Tuesday's practice with his ankle wrapped in ice and a bandage. He spent time shooting free throws with Wade as team president Pat Riley watched from the sideline.

Bosh did not speak with the media Tuesday, but said last week he would avoid the temptation to rush back too soon and risk a long-term absence.

Playing almost exclusively at power forward in Bosh's absence Saturday, James focused more on his post-up game and finished with 38 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists in 38 minutes. James said he would continue to work down low with Bosh out.

"As basketball players, we want to play every game," said Bosh, who averages 18.6 points and is tied with injured backup Udonis Haslem for the team lead in rebounding at 8.2 per game. "We could lose an arm and still find an excuse to be out there. But you have to be smart about it, especially with this team. We want to play for a long time. It's still early. It's the halfway point of the year. We need to take advantage of the rest we can get right now and get healthy."

The Heat have gone just 6-4 in their past 10 games amid a recent rash of injuries, with both James and Bosh sitting out two games with ankle injuries and Wade missing one. They're nearing the end of a stretch that has included only two games over a span of 11 days -- time off that has helped them heal.

But Tuesday was also about unity, which is what sparked James to don red-tinted goggles toward the end of practice to poke fun at Wade.

"D-Wade is like a kid who transferred schools and they don't have any friends," James said. "So, I felt like putting on glasses today, I would help him be accustomed to the new school we've got going on here. I decided to join him and make him become a part of our boy scout club, I guess."

"Skins" Creator Defends Show as "Old-Fashioned"

Some activists are calling it child porn, but the creator of MTV's "Skins" says the show is actually an old-fashioned show about values.

"Skins’ is a very simple and in fact rather old-fashioned television series,” co-creator Bryan Elsley said in a statement issued to MTV.
“It's about the lives and loves of teenagers, how they get through high school, how they deal with their friends, and also how they circumnavigate some of the complications of sex, relationships, educations, parents, drugs and alcohol.”

The Parents Television Council differs, calling “Skins” the “most dangerous program ever for children.”

Elsley said the show, which has U.S. and U.K. versions, is a serious attempt to explore young people's lives.

“When viewers have taken the time to watch the show in a little more depth, they are less concerned about the behavior of the characters," Elsley said. "Teenagers can be loyal, supportive, dedicated, focused, and capable of making informed value judgments about their lives. In the pilot episode of 'Skins,' it's possibly easy to overlook the story wherein a young boy sets off to a party to sell drugs and have sex, but in fact, does neither of these things, because he senses that he has been manipulated by friends and does not feel ready to have sex with someone he does not know properly."

So far, Wrigley, H&R Block, General Motors and Taco Bell have pulled advertising from the show.

“We will continue to monitor every broadcast and every rebroadcast of ‘Skins’ so that we can inform the public which corporations are underwriting underage teen sex, underage teen drug use and underage teen alcohol use,” PTC President Tim Winter said.

Macaulay Culkin Denies Relationship With Adult Film Actress

Macaulay Culkin is denying reports that he's been spending time alone at home - or anywhere else - with a Spanish adult film actress who recently hinted that the two are dating, reports E! Online.

Irene Lopez, a porn star, was spotted with the "Home Alone" actor recently at a live sex club in Barcelona. She claimed that the encounter was not the first time the two had hung out.

"The last time I was with him, no one found out about it," she told E! in an interview. She said she was unsure of why the press discovered their most recent outing. Lopez also said that she didn't want to be a problem if Culkin wanted to reconnect with his ex, "Black Swan" actress Mila Kunis.

"If there's a possibility that he gets back with Mila, I don't want to be an obstacle. The breakup is really fresh," she said.

But Culkin shrugged off the remarks and a photo of the two together that recently appeared online.

"As I do with many fans, I briefly met and took a photo with Irene Lopez at her request," he told E! "I have had no contact with this woman in any capacity, social or otherwise before or since that picture was taken. Any reports to the contrary are false."
Culkin's rep also pushed back against the romance rumors.

"The reports that Macaulay Culkin is dating Irene Lopez are completely false," said Michelle Bega." We are disappointed that Ms. Lopez has told E! Entertainment fictitious stories regarding Mr. Culkin."

"Win Win" Premiere's at Sundance, Finds Giamatti on New Ground

In deference to the light dusting of snow on the ground, Saturday starts with a short bus ride back to Eccles, where yet another packed house awaits the premiere of Paul Giamatti’s upcoming film, “Win Win.”

“Win Win” stars Giamatti as a down on his luck lawyer who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach. In a moment of desperation, he takes advantage of an elderly client, a move than comes back to bite him in the ass when the man’s grandson, a talented wrestler, appears out of the blue.

The character is a departure for Giamatti, as this time he plays a happy, well-adjusted suburban family man. It was almost a deal breaker, according to the actor’s old friend, and “Win Win” writer director Tom McCarthy, who addressed the crowd after its world premiere.

“I've known Paul for almost 20 years now. We go way back, we met at the Yale drama school together and we've been trying to find something for yeast and this just felt like it… I called Paul, he was finishing a movie in London or something and he was flying back. I said, ‘I think I have something,’ and I sent it too him and he read it on the plane, and I went over to house for thanksgiving. And I said, ‘So, what do you think?’ And he said, ‘Wow, I really like the script, it's great.’

“Then I said, ‘I think there's one major obstacle/challenge for you…’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, the dude's happy.’ I said, ‘I know, but you can do it. You can do it - you can show the world.’ And he really did, he found a guy who was content in his life, and not condescend to these suburban characters.”

The film is a rare beast, a feel-good movie that doesn’t insult your intelligence. In Amy Ryan plays his wife, Bobby Cannavale is hilarious as his unhinged best friend, and newcomer Alex Shaffer, who gives a fantastic acting debut as wresting prodigy Kyle Timmons.

McCarthy, a character actor with three dozen films on his resume, who is quietly putting together an impressive body of work on the other side of the camera. He first came to Sundance in 2003 with “The Station Agent,” winning the Audience Award, Special Jury Prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for his story about a dwarf struggling with a break-up who retreats to an abandoned train depot to lick his wounds, only to develop friendships with two unlikely locals. He returned in 2007 with “The Visitor,” a film about a college professor who finds a couple of strangers in his apartment, which earned Richard Jenkins an Oscar nomination and his career a serious shot in the arm. Now he’s back with a film he co-wrote with his childhood friend, Joe Bitoni.

“Joe and I used to be championship wrestlers ourselves. For real--no. we were actually on the same team in high school and this is Joe’s first screenplay by the way. I just had this idea one day, I hadn't really seen anything about high school wrestling, a much-undervalued sport in this country. So I called Joe, and I said, since we've known each other since we were about 10, I sad, "Hey, you wanna develop this idea with me?" And he said, "Totally! I'm in. What do we do?"

“We just start talking a lot and see if there's a story that comes out of it. And that's really where it started, laughing about our old wrestling stories. And Joe is an elder law attorney who lives in the town where we grew up together as kids… so we were just draw on those experiences. I guess a very personal story in that way and a lot of fun to develop.”

And then it’s back outside to go back inside the huge tent where they pen the ticket holder in a line with at least 10 switchbacks, to watch still another movie.

Look Closer: There Are Some Oscar Surprises

Is the biggest surprise of the Oscar nominations the fact that there weren’t any surprises?

Even before the Granddaddy of All Hollywood Trophies announced its list, we’d already had most of the biggest names trotted before us at various other fawn-fest announcements.

But giving things a closer look, the academy did toss a few unexpected selections in the mix and reveal some notable snubs:

“The King’s Speech”: The film and its principals have had clear voices in the awards din since day one, but after gathering 12 nominations from Oscar (and its Golden Globe victory) it’s clearly been crowned as the frontrunner come February 27. A pretty regal accomplishment, given that three months ago everyone was already handing the golden guy to “The Social Network.”

“True Grit”: Just like Marshal Rooster Cogburn, the Coen brothers’ seemingly shopworn effort may have some unexpected glory ahead on the trail. Critics lavished the love on the film, but it was largely ignored by some of the major brand-name awards. It’s got one eye on some ten Oscars now, and let’s not forget, little sister: the Academy adores both underdogs and its own legacy (John Wayne took a Best Actor trophy for the 1969 version).

Mark Ruffalo: Annette Bening and Julianne Moore have shared most of the awards attention for “The Kids Are All Right,” but Ruffalo, an actor Hollywood and the public seem to regard with both great affection and great admiration, finally scores his first-ever Oscar nom – both overdue and, for this film, richly deserved.

Mark Wahlberg: Even mostly unheralded (but perennial Oscar darling) Amy Adams managed to grab a nom out of the frenzy over the seven-times-nominated “The Fighter,” but the leading man who tirelessly kept himself in fighting shape in the long slugfest to get the film made is overlooked. Wahlberg does have a nomination as a producer of the film, however, in his corner.

Christopher Nolan: No nomination for directing Best Pic contender “Inception?” We must be dreaming.

Mila Kunis: Was a supporting actress nomination for “Black Swan” expected? Sorta. Would it have been deserved? Umm…We’ll finally get around to seeing Jacki Weaver’s turn in “Animal Kingdom” and let you know.

Ryan Gosling: The Academy turned its collective back on his performance as sharply as he was rejected in “Blue Valentine.” With a nearly symbiotic performance alongside Michelle Williams, only honoring hers seems like nominating one half of a broken heart.

Javier Bardem: He’s coming to awards attention late in the game, but again, the Academy loves them a legacy nominee – and he has a better haircut in “Biutiful."

Movies that should seemingly have no business being mentioned in the same breath as Oscar: That twangy disaster “Country Strong” (Best Song nominee) and “Hereafter” aka “Clint Eastwood’s Worst Film Ever” (Best Visual Effects nominee) can now use the phrase “Academy Awards nominee” in their home video marketing. But, mercifully, “Burlesque” can’t. So there’s at least some justice among Academy voters.

'The Kids Are All Right" Screenwriter's Uncoolnees Rewarded With Oscar Nomination

So if you’re “The Kids Are All Right” co-screenwriter Stuart Blumberg, do you play it chill on the morning of Academy Awards nominations and wait for the phone to ring with some welcome news?

“My morning was that I tried to sleep through it to act cool and could not,” Blumberg told PopcornBiz just two hours after being nominated in the Original Screenplay category with co-writer and director Lisa Cholodenko. “I kept waking up, so I finally admitted that I cared. I got up and I watched it live on IMDB.”

“It really was surreal,” Blumberg admitted of hearing the film’s four Oscar noms announced (Best Picture, Annette Bening for Best Actress, Mark Ruffalo for Best Supporting Actor and his shared writing nod). “Thank God we didn’t think about a day like this, because we just spent so many days, so many months in front of that computer screen just trying to make this the best possible script, and then spent years trying to make it the best possible movie. It’s crazy that that actually paid off, and I guess that it did.”

The screenwriter said that the film’s nominations “mean that people in our profession, our chosen line of work, have watched this movie and have seen something that they believe to be of substance and of merit and of lasting value, and that’s an incredibly rewarding thing – to be honored by your peers who know how hard it is to get a movie made, let alone a movie that has something to say.”

Blumberg and Cholodenko toiled for years on the project, and he said that once filmed, one scene in particular blew away their expectations beyond what they’d put on the page: “The dinner scene with Annette Bening singing the Joni Mitchell song. We had an amazing time writing that scene, laughing and crying while writing it. And then when we saw it actually realized it was better than we ever hoped it could be. It was truly a fulfilling artistic experience.”

And of course, he’s already made a momentous decision about Oscar night: to rent or to purchase formal wear. “I splurged and I bought a tux,” he admitted.

50 Cent, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Launch Film Production Company

Party like it's your birthday, because 50 Cent has some exciting news: the rapper and boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. have announced the launch their own film production company at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday.

Fiddy, born Curtis Jackson, told MTV News he hit the club this weekend to celebrate, Mayweather Productions, the birth of his new collaboration with the champion boxer,

"I look forward to being a part of some really great projects that have the kind of artistic integrity I'll be proud of, even when I'm gone, because these pictures will be here even after I'm gone." said the "Candy Store" rapper at a press conference in Utah.

Acting isn't new for Fiddy; the rapper has stared in films "Righteous Kill" and "Twelve," and even runs a film firm, Cheetah Vision. But his partnership with Mayweather is a step towards what might be a more permanent industry for him.

"I'm sure in the future, I won't be able to rap forever... so we can do different things," 50 said. "This is exciting, you know, the beginning, the birth of a collaboration between be and Floyd."

The production company is brand-spanking new, so Mayweather said the first step is just shooting the breeze with his new partner.

"We're going to do what we normally do," Mayweather said. "Sit in a room and brainstorm and try to come up with new ideas, be creative and just work together and try to be positive. That's the main thing. It's about working hard, being positive, and working together."

And what would a proper launch be without a party?

"I got a dinner tongiht," 50 Cent told MTV News on Saturday, "And we're going to an actual nightclub. We're just celebrating the launch of Mayweather Productions."

Log on for YouTube: The Movie

"Life in a Day," the ultimate DIY film, gets Sundance debut amid Hollywood awards season glitz.

We're not usually fans of long-form, live-streamed events, which can hold viewers hostage to fickle Internet connections. But Thursday night brings an event that's worth logging on for: the premiere of YouTube's "Life in a Day" movie at the Sundance Film Festival.

For the uninitiated, the film is the ultimate group DIY effort – a pastiche of about 1,000 of the 80,000 clips shot by regular folks from around the globe last July 24 and uploaded to the video site.

The movie chronicling 24 hours in the life of the world is 90 minutes long. But we've spent far more (and probably too much) time clicking through the some of the 4,500 hours of raw material, which ranges from the mundane (clips of people cooking and eating) to the funny (lots of mugging for the camera) to the sad (multiple hospital scenes) to the life affirming (newborns making their video debuts).

The movie strikes us as a kind of an old-school Life magazine photography project (think 1974’s “One Day in the Life of America”) re-animated for the Internet age, when we're all potential filmmakers whose lives, on some level, merit at least a few seconds, if not 15 minutes, of fame.

Filmmakers Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald ("The Last King of Scotland") helped assemble the film, which can be viewed here Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

However the final product turns out – and our hopes are high – the debut of "Life in a Day" stands as a welcome counterpoint to the glitz of the Hollywood movie awards season, which ends Feb. 27 with the Academy Awards.

The debut also comes less than a month after movie critic Roger Ebert pushed a YouTube short showing scenes the post-Christmas blizzard in New York for an Oscar nomination. "Idiot With a Tripod," alas, didn't make the list of Best Short Film (Live Action) nominees announced Tuesday.

But we may yet see Oscar smile on a movie spawned on YouTube or elsewhere on the Internet (even if in the case of "Life in a Day" speeches by thousands of collaborators would make the seemingly interminable awards broadcast even more so).

"Life in a Day" certainly would be eligible in next year's contest. National Geographic Films reportedly revealed plans this week to release the movie in theaters beginning July 24 – one year to the day ordinary citizens from nearly 200 countries took out their cameras for an experiment in chronicling our times.

In the meantime, go here to see some of the clips (warning: it’s addictive time suck) and check out a promo for the movie below:

Academy Nominates Surprising Music Industry Acts

Most of the focus Tuesday morning surrounded the big name nominees for this year’s Academy Awards – Portman, Bening, Firth, Bale and more – but amongst this year’s first-time Academy Award nominees were some surprising familiar faces from the music industry.

Trent Reznor, the lead singer of Nine Inch Nails, along with Atticus Ross, were nominated for their Original Score for “The Social Network,” which many consider the duo the front-runners to win. Just last week, Reznor and Ross won a Golden Globe award for their score for the film.

“When David approached us to write the score for ‘The Social Network,’ we were intrigued and excited to see what we could bring to the project – but truly couldn’t imagine it would lead to an Oscar nomination. We are extremely grateful to the Academy and very proud to have contributed to David’s vision,” Reznor and Ross said in a joint statment to Access Hollywood on Tuesday.

Reznor seems to have found a second career in scoring films for director David Fincher – next up, he’ll be scoring Fincher’s U.S. remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

They’ll be competing against Hollywood legend Hans Zimmer for his score for Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” and A.R. Rahman, who won two years ago for both Original Score and Best Song (“Jai Ho”) for “Slumdog Millionaire.” Rahman is back this year, re-teaming with Danny Boyle with his score for “127 Hours.” Also up in this category are John Powell for “How to Train Your Dragon” and Alexandre Desplat for “The King’s Speech.”

A surprising absence in the Original Score category was French DJ duo Daft Punk, who did the soundtrack for “Tron: Legacy.” Some critics point out that they might not have qualified because some of their score used music from the franchise’s original film, making it not entirely “Original.”

In the Original Song category, popular British singer Dido, along with her brother and frequent producing partner DJ Rollo Armstrong, received a nod for writing the lyrics to “If I Rise” from “127 Hours,” for which Rahman composed the music.

They’ll be competing against Hollywood frequents Randy Newman (“We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3”) and Alan Menken and Glenn Slater (“I See The Light” from “Tangled”), as well as Tom Douglas, Troy Verges and Hillary Lindsey for “Coming Home” from “Country Strong.”

Access has reached out to Dido & Rollo for reaction to their nominations. We hope to hear from them soon and we’ll update if we hear back!

Greg Kinnear Defends Axed ‘Kennedys’ Miniseries

The future for “The Kennedys” – the axed miniseries about the famous political family – remains in limbo, but star Greg Kinnear is hopeful the project will find a suitable home.

Access Hollywood caught up with the actor, who plays John F. Kennedy alongside Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy in the miniseries that was originally slated to air on The History Channel, at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday, where Greg defended the project.

“Unfortunate,” Greg told Access when asked about the project’s uncertain road ahead. “Obviously, I’ve read everything that everybody else has.

“We had an extraordinary, great group behind the show and it was done with great care and sensitivity and The History Channel, for whatever reason, got into the hot box on that,” Greg continued. “We’re hoping it finds a home. I’m not sure what its status is right now.”

As previously reported, when Access caught up with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at Sundance on Monday, the son of Robert F. Kennedy shared his reaction to the news that the eight-part miniseries would not be shown on The History Channel.

“You know, I don’t know much about it… My understanding of it was that it was historically inaccurate, that it was created by a group of people who had an extreme and ingrained hostility towards my family and that they, you know, they twisted history,” he told Access. “I don’t think that — in any case, whoever it’s about — that we should be teaching history to Americans that is not true.”

Days after The History Channel canceled their plans to air the miniseries, Showtime also passed on “The Kennedys.”

Tobey Maguire ‘Excited’ For Andrew Garfield’s ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

Andrew Garfield will be battling evil foes in the upcoming “Spider-Man” franchise reboot, and the actor can now count on the original web-slinger, Tobey Maguire, to root him on.

“I’m really excited,” Tobey told Access Hollywood at the Sundance Film Festival when asked about the new Marc Webb-directed movie with Andrew and Emma Stone.

“I think Marc Webb is an exciting filmmaker, Andrew is a great actor,” Tobey, who is promoting his new movie “The Details,” said at the annual winter film festival. “I’ve been a fan of his. I saw ‘Boy A,’ which I loved, a bit ago… and, of course, ‘The Social Network.’”

Adding, “I’m a fan. I’m excited to see what they do.”

Garfield previously told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush that the sight of himself in the iconic costume blew him away.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m kind of excited by that!” Andrew said on the Golden Globes red carpet earlier this month when Access showed him a photo of himself in the red and blue suit. “It’s ridiculous and surreal… I’m really kind of humbled by it.”

The “Spider-Man” reboot is slated to swing into theaters in July 2012.

Kate Middleton Quits Her Job To Focus On Wedding

She may not be a royal yet, but Kate Middleton just made her latest step toward officially becoming a member of the royal family – she quit her day job.

According to Britain’s Hello magazine, Kate quit her job as a project manager for her parents’ mail-order party supply company, Party Pieces.

Kate reportedly left her gig at the company in order to continue planning her wedding to Britain’s Prince William, which will happen in just 93 days at London’s Westminster Abbey.

“She is really throwing herself into it with gusto and energy and is an absolute pleasure to work with,” a friend of Kate’s told the mag.

“It is a steep learning curve and at the same time she is learning a lot about the royal family and what the future holds,” the friend added.

While no invites have officially gone out yet for the couple’s big day, according to Britain’s Daily Express, the Queen’s private secretary has contacted private secretaries for other royals in recent days, asking them to “Save the Date” of April 29 – the big date William and Kate have chosen for their nuptials.

“It’s a sort of pre-invitation, asking them to keep the date free. It’s been done because of their diary commitments but they haven’t received a gold embossed invitation yet,” a senior Buckingham Palace official said on Tuesday evening, according to the newspaper.

Among those who have already announced they will attend include several deposed royals including, Crown Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia and his wife, Crown Princess Catherine, the Romanian royal family and the Greek royal family, the paper reported.

A rep for the Greek royal family said they received a “Save the Date” notice via fax.

“They received a fax in the last few days,” the spokeswoman said.

Terrence Howard Reacts To Idea Of Playing Ted Williams On Big Screen

The story of “golden voice” Ted Williams’ rapid rise from homeless to household name was, as some said, the stuff Hollywood movies are often made of.

Should Ted’s story find its way to the big screen, Ted previously told Access Hollywood he’d love to see Terrence Howard portray the once-down-on-his-luck radio announcer.

So, what does Terrence think about that idea?

“Well, I don’t have a sexy and sophisticated voice as he does, but his story is really compelling,” Terrence told Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos during an interview in Park City, Utah, where Terrence was promoting his new film, “The Ledge,” at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. “It’s the Cinderella story.”

“Would you do it?” Maria asked.

“Yeah, I would. Am I that old yet?” the actor joked. “Tell Ted, ‘Thank you brother.’ Thank you for the endorsement, man. Wow.”

Ted’s path took him from the streets of Columbus, Ohio to Hollywood, and then to a rehab center in Texas in mid-January, after an interview with Dr. Phil. A little more than a week later, and after another appearance on “Dr. Phil” via phone from the rehab center, Ted reportedly checked himself out of the facility.

Despite Ted’s struggles, Terrence said he has hope for Ted.

“[There’s] some doom and gloom, but the look in his eye is still powerful and I think he’s going to come alive,” Terrence said of Ted.

Terrence added that he could see why someone would go to rehab, following encouragement from the TV doctor.

“I think Dr. Phil would’ve scared the hell out of me too! I would have to go to rehab after talking to Dr. Phil,” he told Maria.

Of course, if Terrence doesn’t pan out, Ted did have a backup star who he thinks could play him on the big screen.

“After his second re-election, President Obama,” Ted previously joked with Access. “A lot of people have been telling me that I look like President Obama from a side view.”

Matthew Morrison Reveals Details From ‘Glee’s’ Underwear Episode

Matthew Morrison has revealed new details about “Glee’s” upcoming underwear episode.

“We did this thing where, one of the characters is singing for the first time… and in order to get over their nerves, they have to see people in their underwear to make them feel better, more confident, about… singing,” Matthew told Access Hollywood as he joined some of his cast members and show creator Ryan Murphy, to shoot an upcoming cover for The Hollywood Reporter.

Last week, TV Line’s Michael Ausiello reported that the McKinley High gang were set to strip down to their skivvies in the episode as newcomer Lauren, played by Ashley Fink, sings for the first time on the show.

Beyond donning underwear, Matthew told Access, he expects “Glee” to continue to push boundaries.

“I think this show is gonna be more racier, I think the writers on our show constantly try to push the boundaries. Sometimes I read the script, I’m like, ‘How are we gonna get away with this being an 8 o’clock show on a Tuesday night?’ But I think TV’s a different medium than it used to be.”

Beyond Lauren’s first vocal performance, plenty of more developments are in the works for series, including the much talked about potential Jennifer Lopez cameo. According to Matthew, he’d like the newest “American Idol” judge to visit his set with a net on her noggin.

“I think she’s awesome. I’ve actually talked to her before about it,” Matthew told Access. “At one point we were talking about her being a lunch lady… in a hairnet, and stuff… kind of, ‘deglamorize Jennifer Lopez.’”

In related “Glee” news, the show returns after the Super Bowl on FOX on February 6 and the episode is going to be a “Thriller” – quite literally. While many fans know that the cast shot a song and dance number on the football field to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Entertainment Weekly revealed this week that the number they groove to is actually a mash-up of the King of Pop’s classic and “Heads Will Roll” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

“This is up there with the ‘Rocky Horror,’ Madonna and Britney episodes because there’s so much production going into it,” Corey Monteith told the mag of the big production.

According to EW, the episode opens with a big dance number featuring The Cheerios, shaking their bits to Katy Perry’s “California Gurls.”

“It’s BMXers and girls, and not only are they shooting fire out of their boobs, but there’s a fire whip,” Heather Morris, who plays Cheerio Brittany, told the mag.

As for the storyline, the episode is reportedly set to hinge around the troubles caused by Max Adler’s closeted football player character Dave Karofsky and Chris Colfer’s Kurt Hummel, prompting Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) and Matthew’s Mr. Schuester, to take action.

The Cheerios too will spend more time in the fray, when Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) ramps up their routines and brings in a cannon, into which she encourages Brittany to climb.

“I put her in a human cannon,” Jane told EW of Sue’s diabolical moves. “I’m told by the principal I can’t because of insurance considerations and liability, and I destroy his office in a rage.”

First Look: Katy Perry On ‘How I Met Your Mother’

The first photos of Katy Perry on the set of “How I Met Your Mother” have surfaced.

Katy recently filmed a guest appearance on the CBS comedy, playing Honey, opposite Neil Patrick Harris’ womanizing character Barney.

The episode, which airs on February 7, will feature Barney getting uncharacteristically emotional when he opens up to Katy’s character Honey.

Honey is the cousin of Zoey, played by Jennifer Morrison.

Katy’s “HIMYM” episode is her second on-screen pairing with NPH in recent months. She also recently filmed the live action film “The Smurfs,” playing Smurfette. Neil plays Patrick Wilson in the project. The film is due out on August 3, 2011.

“How I Met Your Mother” stars NPH, Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Alyson Hanningan and Cobie Smulders.

Katy’s episode airs at 8 PM on Monday, February 7.

'The King's Speech' Gets 12 Oscar Nominations

The British monarchy saga "The King's Speech" leads the Academy Awards with 12 nominations, including best picture and acting honors for Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush.

Also nominated for best picture Tuesday were the psychosexual thriller "Black Swan"; the boxing drama "The Fighter"; the sci-fi blockbuster "Inception"; the lesbian-family tale "The Kids Are All Right"; the survival story "127 Hours"; the Facebook chronicle "The Social Network"; the animated smash "Toy Story 3"; the Western "True Grit"; and the Ozarks crime thriller "Winter's Bone."

"True Grit" ran second with 10 nominations, including acting honors for Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld.

The Feb. 27 Oscars set up a best-picture showdown between two favorites, "The King's Speech" and "The Social Network." "The Social Network" won best drama at the Golden Globes and was picked as the year's best by key critics groups, while "The King's Speech" pulled an upset last weekend by winning the Producers Guild of America Awards top prize, whose recipient often goes to claim best picture at the Oscars.

"This story has struck such a rich resonant chord with audiences of all ages, which is very exciting — to have your work honored by your industry peers is even better," Rush said in a statement.

The favorites in the male-acting categories both were nominated, Globe winners Firth as best actor for "The King's Speech" and Christian Bale as supporting actor for "The Fighter."

The best-actress field shapes up as a two-woman race between Annette Bening for "The Kids Are All Right," who won the Globe for actress in a musical or comedy, and Natalie Portman for "Black Swan," who received the Globe for dramatic actress.

The supporting-actress Oscar could prove the most competitive among acting prizes. Melissa Leo won the Globe for "The Fighter," but she faces strong challenges from that film's co-star Amy Adams and 14-year-old newcomer Steinfeld, who missed out on a Globe nomination for "True Grit" but made the cut for supporting actress at the Oscars.

"The Social Network" casts Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who's depicted as an interpersonal lout in one-on-one relations but a genius for the masses, creating an online hangout where half a billion people now keep connected with friends.

"The King's Speech" stars Firth as Queen Elizabeth II's father, the stammering George VI, who reluctantly came to the throne after his brother abdicated in 1936, a terrible time for a stuttering monarch as British subjects looked to their ruler for inspiration via radio as World War II approached.

The two films represent a showdown between classy, traditional Oscar bait and edgy, youthful, up-to-the-minute drama.

With its aristocrats, statesmen and perilous times, "The King's Speech" is a throwback to the majestic, eye-filling costume pageants that dominated film awards in Hollywood's earlier decades. Its nominations also include best director for Tom Hooper and supporting-acting slots for Bonham Carter as the king's devoted wife and Rush as his wily speech therapist.

"The Social Network" is an immediate story, set not in palaces but college dorm rooms, cluttered start-up space and anonymous legal offices where Zuckerberg battles former associates over the proceeds of his invention.

David Fincher is the best-directing favorite for "The Social Network" after winning that prize at the Globes.

"My recommendation to anybody who wants to get an Oscar nomination is, work with David Fincher. It was just a triumph of teamwork," Aaron Sorkin, nominated for best adapted screenplay for "The Social Network," said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Along with Firth and Eisenberg, best-actor contenders are Javier Bardem as a dying father in the Spanish-language drama "Biutiful," which also is up for best foreign-language film; Bridges as boozy lawman Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit," a role that earned John Wayne an Oscar for the 1969 adaptation of the Western novel; and James Franco in the real-life tale of a climber trapped in a crevasse after a boulder crushes his arm in "127 Hours."

Bening was nominated for best actress as a lesbian mom whose family is thrown into turmoil after her teenage children seek out their sperm-donor father in "The Kids Are All Right." Portman was nominated as a ballerina losing her grip on reality in "Black Swan."

Other best-actress nominees are Nicole Kidman as a grieving mother in "Rabbit Hole"; Jennifer Lawrence as a teen trying to find her missing father amid the Ozark Mountains' criminal underbelly in "Winter's Bone"; and Michelle Williams as a wife in a failing marriage in "Blue Valentine."

Joining Fincher among best-director picks are Darren Aronofsky for "Black Swan"; Joel and Ethan Coen for "True Grit"; Tom Hooper for "The King's Speech"; and David O. Russell for "The Fighter."

One notable snub was the omission of director Christopher Nolan for "Inception," though he got a nod for original screenplay. Nolan also missed out on a directing Oscar nomination for "The Dark Knight," which was famously not nominated for best picture.

The directing category is back to an all-male lineup after Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win that prize last year for "The Hurt Locker," which also claimed best picture.

Bale, the star of Nolan's "Batman" franchise, is a strong favorite to win supporting actor as former boxer Dicky Eklund, who helps his half-brother to a title shot after his own career unraveled amid drugs and crime in "The Fighter." The film's star, Mark Wahlberg, missed out on a nomination as Eklund's half-brother, boxer Micky Ward.

Two years ago, Bale's "Batman" co-star, the late Heath Ledger, was on the same awards track as he won a posthumous Oscar for supporting actor for "The Dark Knight."

"The Fighter" offers two sterling supporting-actress performances from Leo as Ward and Eklund's doting but domineering mother and Adams as Ward's tough, defiant girlfriend. Steinfeld, who was just 13 when she shot her debut performance in "True Grit," also is a strong contender as a girl who hires lawman Cogburn to track down her father's killer.

"Toy Story 3," the top-grossing film released in 2010, also is nominated for animated feature and is expected to become the fourth-straight winner in that category from Disney's Pixar Animation, following "Up," "WALL-E" and "Ratatouille." Pixar has won five of the nine animation Oscars since the category was added.

The other animation nominees are "How to Train Your Dragon" and "The Illusionist."

While two of the three animated categories are huge commercial successes, the best-picture race is a mix of big commercial hits and smaller critical darlings, which is what academy organizers wanted when they expanded the competition to 10 films.

Like "Toy Story 3," "Inception" is a blockbuster, coming from director Nolan, whose "The Dark Knight" missed out on a best-picture nomination two years ago, contributing to the decision to double the number of contenders so that acclaimed popular movies would have a better chance.

"True Grit" is the first $100 million Western hit since the 1990s, "The Social Network" climbed to about $95 million in revenue, and "Black Swan" is closing on $100 million. At the other end are "Winter's Bone" with $6.3 million and "127 Hours" with $11 million, respectable returns for lower-budgeted independent films but small change next to big studio productions.

Besides Leo, Adams, Bonham Carter and Steinfeld, Jacki Weaver earned a supporting-actress nomination as a crime family matriarch in the Australian thriller "Animal Kingdom."

Rounding out the supporting-actor field with Bale and Rush are John Hawkes as a backwoods tough guy in "Winter's Bone"; Jeremy Renner as a holdup man in the bank-heist thriller "The Town"; Mark Ruffalo as a sperm-donor dad in "The Kids Are All Right."

The Oscar ceremony will be televised live on ABC from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

Jackson's Doc Pleads not Guilty in Star's Death

Michael Jackson's doctor pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the pop superstar's death as the case moved rapidly toward a trial that will likely be televised.

"Your honor, I am an innocent man," Murray told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor in a soft voice. "I definitely plead not guilty."

Lawyers for Murray, who is accused of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and other sedatives, said they would be ready to go to trial within the 60-day statutory time limit, which would make for an unusually speedy trial.

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said the prosecution would be ready to go as well. The judge scheduled the trial to begin March 28 and set a pretrial hearing for Feb. 7.

"Dr. Murray is looking forward to finally telling his side of the story," defense attorney Ed Chernoff said outside court.

Asked why the defense wants to begin the trial so quickly, Chernoff said, "Dr. Murray has been waiting 22 months for his opportunity to do this. It's the first chance we have to force the issue."

Pastor said he was inclined to allow television coverage of the trial and will hear attorneys' views on that and other issues at a Feb. 7 hearing.

District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said outside court that her office has a policy of not opposing cameras in court. Cameras were allowed at the hearing Tuesday for the first time, marking a shift in Pastor's previous ban.

One of Murray's lawyers said earlier he would not seek a plea bargain, and the defense had no qualms about going to trial in spite of strong prosecution evidence at a preliminary hearing aiming to prove the doctor's gross negligence killed Jackson.

"We're going to go to trial," defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan said in an interview. "I think our case is really solid. We were very pleased with the way the evidence went at the preliminary hearing... This should result in an acquittal."

Gibbons declined to comment on whether a plea bargain had been discussed saying it would be unethical to address such a matter.

Defense attorneys not connected to the case said Murray would be well advised to plea bargain.

"If I were advising him, I would be talking to the district attorney to see what they would be willing to accept," said criminal defense attorney Steve Cron. An offer of probation with community service and temporary suspension of Murray's medical license would be worth considering if it were proposed, he said.

Pastor has suspended Murray's license to practice in California pending trial.

Legal experts said several defenses are available to Murray. Among them is the suggestion by his lawyers that Jackson, desperate for sleep, self-administered a fatal dose of propofol while Murray was out of the room. That theory would mean Jackson either injected propofol into an IV line or swallowed the drug, which is meant to be administered intravenously during surgery.

Prosecution experts are likely to challenge that scenario. They also could say Murray was negligent in leaving the drug on a night stand where Jackson could reach it.

"They've got to explain why Dr. Murray was giving him propofol in the first place, in a setting where it is not normally given," said Cron, who has been watching the case.

Murray may have to testify in his own defense to provide the answers, Cron said. Chernoff said the defense has not yet made a decision on that possibility.

"My guess is he will have to explain some of these things and present his persona to the jury as a reasonable, competent doctor," Cron said.

If convicted, Murray could face a maximum of four years in prison.

In a six-day preliminary hearing, a portrait emerged of a doctor trying to help his famous client overcome debilitating insomnia with propofol, which is not intended for home use. Jackson had used it before and demanded it, calling it his "milk."

A coroner testified that Jackson, 50, died of a propofol overdose in combination with other drugs on June 25, 2009. His death was classified as a homicide.

Murray's behavior before and after Jackson stopped breathing was detailed by household staff and paramedics. It was backed up with phone records, e-mails and, most importantly, a transcript of Murray's nearly three-hour interview with police.

Murray said he gave Jackson a low dose of propofol after spending 10 hours trying to get him to sleep using other drugs. When the star appeared to doze off, Murray said he left the room for two minutes to go to the bathroom then returned to find Jackson not breathing.

He delayed calling 911 for between 25 minutes and an hour while he tried to revive him, testimony showed.

Fox's Bill O'Reilly Marks No-Name's Exit

Bill O'Reilly marked the departure of rival Keith Olbermann from MSNBC, but wouldn't say his name.

The host of "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News Channel, a frequent target of Olbermann's barbs, noted on Monday's broadcast that a "hateful commentator" has been replaced by MSNBC.

Olbermann and MSNBC abruptly announced on Friday that he would be leaving "Countdown," the network's most-watched show and the template for which MSNBC remade itself as a network with liberal hosts in prime time. No reason was given for the exit.

"If you read about the shake-up, you would think the MSNBC people were ratings monsters," O'Reilly said. "That's outright deception by the liberal press, is it not?"

"Yes," answered Fox News contributor Bernard Goldberg.

O'Reilly said that Fox News was ranked well above MSNBC in the ratings, and that 12 of its shows had a bigger audience on average than anything on MSNBC. Fox News was the fourth most popular cable network last year, he said.

"This network, to be ranked 28th with all of NBC's resources, is a failure," he said. "The Fox News Channel is a colossal success, a colossal success. You never read that. I very rarely read that."

Fox did not immediately respond to a request for an interview with O'Reilly.

Olbermann had frequently targeted O'Reilly in his "Worst Persons in the World" segment. O'Reilly had fought back, so much so that there were published reports that corporate leaders of the networks were involved at one point in trying to cool tensions.

O'Reilly's ratings soared at the same time as Olbermann became a foil in the same time slot. "The O'Reilly Factor" averaged 2.1 million viewers in 2006, the year Olbermann actively began being an opinion commentator, and had 3.2 million viewers last year, the Nielsen Co. said. Olbermann averaged 1 million viewers last year.

Meanwhile, Olbermann tweeted followers Monday night to thank them for their support. "The reports of the death of my career are greatly exaggerated," he wrote.

Report: Jaime Pressly Splits From Husband Simran Singh

It has been reported from various sources that 'My Name is Earl' actress Jaime Pressly has split from her husband of 16 months, Simran Singh.

Radar Online is reporting an insider saying that Pressly, 33, and entertainment lawyer, Singh, have called it quits. The person is quoted saying, "They are done."

Another insider is saying, "It's over. I don't think they have officially filed anything yet though," quoted by Us Weekly.

The insider goes on, "I think it comes down to she married this guy too fast. He seemed like a good guy but he is super full of himself and puts her down for everything. He picks fights with her for any little thing."

The person adds that Pressly is worried over how the separation will affect her three-year-old son, Dezi, who she had from a previous relationship.

The insider continues, "She doesn't want to confuse him. Her baby is her top priority. She is a strong girl though and she will come out of this fine."

It has certainly not been an easy month for Pressly; she was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Police sources reported that the 33-year-old star was driving in Santa Monica when police pulled her over around 11 PM for an alleged traffic violation. Following a field sobriety test, she was arrested and booked.

Kelly Osbourne Is the New Face of Madonna's Fashion Line

Kelly Osbourne's has been named the new face of Madonna's Material Girl fashion line.

Osbourne, who once called herself an "ugly duckling," replaces 'Gossip Girl' star Taylor Momsen, according to a tweet from the company.

Material Girl is a year-old juniors design collaboration between the iconic music superstar and 14-year-old daughter Lourdes. It's sold exclusively at Macy's.

"Material Girl is thrilled to confirm that Kelly Osbourne is the new face for 2011. We will be sharing all the details on this exciting new campaign in the coming weeks," her rep confirmed in a statement.

Material Girl launched in 2010 with rebellious Momsen as its face. Late last year though, Lourdes blogged that the label was "desperately seeking" a new face.

Osbourne, who slimmed down considerably after an image-altering turn on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," has updated her look from goth to glam.

"I've spent the last few years trying to figure out who Kelly Osbourne is, from addiction to awards and fashion faux pas," she writes on her official blog.

Things seem to be looking up for Osbourne, who earlier this month was seen with British musician Rob Damiani, after a long funk from breaking up with Luke Worrall last summer.

Elton John Records Duet With 'Glee's Matthew Morrison

Apparently, Sir Elton John has more than one reason to be 'gleeful' these days. In addition to becoming a new dad to baby Zachary with partner David Furnish, John recently recorded a duet with Matthew Morrison for the 'Glee' star's upcoming solo album.

News officially broke three months ago that John would be helping Morrison (who plays glee club director Mr. Schuester), but the two officially recorded the song this Monday to John's (and we're sure, Morrison's) delight.

"I just did it," says John in a Parade interview. "It's a duet. It's ... really fantastic. He sings great on it." The Rocket Man even revealed that their duet is a mashup of two songs from John's 1972's 'Honky Château.' "It's a medley of 'Mona Lisas and Madhatters' going into 'Rocket Man.'

Morrison, 32, says that he initially wanted to make a solo album that was "Glee"-friendly - full of popular songs that would attract a younger audience - but it quickly morphed into something entirely different. "I don't want to make a 'Glee' album," says Morrison. "I want to do something that's really personal to me." His debut, 'Bringing It to the Masses,' will be out next month.

There's no word on whether the students of McKinley will cover any Elton John tunes in an upcoming episode, but he seemed excited at the possibility. "Of course, I'd be into that, he says. "It's always great when someone covers your songs, no matter how good or bad the version is. You know, I started out as a songwriter, so I always get a kick out of that."
