'Dragon' Takes Top Animation Award

For one night, in one room, "Toy Story 3" was not the best animated film of the year.

The 2011 Annie Awards crowned "How to Train Your Dragon" as the year's Best Animated Feature, an honor that surprised no one familiar with the dispute that led Pixar and Disney to withdraw from the International Animated Film Association (which goes by ASIFA, for Association Internationale du Film d'Animation).

The results were virtually an exact replay of the biggest Annies scandal ever, which took place two years ago when DreamWorks' "Kung Fu Panda" won 10 awards and Pixar's "WALL-E" was shut out completely. That year, "Kung Fu Panda" won in the identical 10 categories in which "How to Train Your Dragon" took home prizes on Saturday.

And while "Dragon" has a better critical reputation than "Panda," the sweep makes it clear that these particular awards have a serious credibility problem if they wish to be known for honoring the best the art form has to offer.

Pixar and Disney's sole win came in the Best Animated Short Subject category, where the Pixar short "Day & Night" won.

On the television side, honors went to "Robot Chicken," "T.U.F.F. Puppy" and "SpongeBob SquarePants," but the big winner was once again a DreamWorks production, "Kung Fu Panda Holiday."

Overall, DreamWorks productions won in 15 out of the 24 categories. The only categories in which the studio was nominated but did not win were Best Television Commercial and Storyboarding in a Television Production.

In August, Disney and Pixar pulled out of ASIFA, partly because the organization was unwilling to make further changes to its judging process. Although the group has tightened its rules to restrict voting to those who've been approved by special committees, DreamWorks employees are said by those familiar with the roster to make up as much as 40 percent of the membership.

Disney and Pixar did not submit any films for nomination this year, although the ASIFA rules allow its nominating committees to add any films they deem worthy. DreamWorks had received 39 nominations to seven for Disney and Pixar combined.

No Disney/Pixar nominees or employees attended the show, which took place at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus.

One bit of irony: two years ago, animator Bill Plympton decried the sweep by "Kung Fu Panda," calling it a "travesty" and saying that it felt as if the process had been "rigged."

Saturday night, Plympton appeared at the Annies to present the award for Best Directing in a Television Production. The winner: "Kung Fu Panda Holiday."

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Moore was a member of Dublin band Skid Row before joining Thin Lizzy in 1973. He left after four months but rejoined four years later and played on the band's "Black Rose" album.

He later had a successful solo career, and his accomplished, bluesy playing won plaudits from other musicians.

In the first six second clip, we catch a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it glimpse of Brit Brit in a red dress, surrounded by microphones, a la her earlier tweet. There’s nothing new here – no sign of any Jonas Akerlund-approved dancing yet, either.

Britney Spears – “Hold It Against Me” Teaser #2

Tease #3 offers something a little more novel – a retrospective of the pop icon’s past videos, keeping up with the high-tech vibe of the first teasers, as “Toxic” fades into “Hold It Against Me.” Is this perhaps the video’s intro, or just another way Spears can hold out on us?

Britney Spears – “Hold It Against Me” Teaser #3

Let’s hope for some answers when Teaser #4 drops, presumably tomorrow.

Katy Perry’s Date for the Grammys? Her Grandmother

Katy Perry is bringing someone special as her date to the Grammys on Feb. 13—and we’re not talking about hubby Russell Brand.

"My grandma, who is 90 years old, is going to come with me," the pop star told The Associated Press. "She's going to be my date on the red carpet cause I figured if I don't win any Grammys I still get to go home with my granny,"

Perry is nominated for four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year for "Teenage Dream." She spoke about performing at the ceremony.

"It's going to be an amazing performance. I don't want to get too much into it but it's going to be a medley of 'Teenage Dream." "But there's going to be a lot of surprises here and there."

The pop star also told the AP that being the voice of Smurfette for the forthcoming Smurfs movie was natural to her. "The Smurfs movie was really fun for me cause a lot of times, you know, 360 days out of the year I feel like a cartoon. So I thought playing a cartoon was a natural thing to do,"

She added: "With 'The Smurfs' I get to walk into the studio and I can be in my pajamas and I make a really cute little voice, which is kind of a mixture of my voice and a little voice."

Dana Carvey Hosts “Saturday Night Live” With a Cameo By Justin Bieber

The Church Lady and Garth of "Wayne’s World" fame returned to “Saturday Night Live” last night.

Dana Carvey, one of the show’s distinguished alums, was the guest host and brought back two of the beloved characters that he made famous during his "SNL" tenure.

The show opened with a new segment of "Wayne’s World," with Mike Myers reprising his role as Wayne and Carvey as his sidekick Garth. The theme of the segment was the Oscars during whitch the pair mentioned the name of the film “Winter’s Bone” several times.
Wayne and Garth may have looked a bit older since we last saw them, but the pair’s memorable catch phrases (“No way?” “Way!”) were still there. As for which film they think will win best picture, Wayne said: ““The Social Network”—NOT!”

Carvey put on the wig and glasses once again as the Church Lady for a new “Church Chat,”, in which she slammed the current crop of television such as “16 and Pregnant” and “Skins.” Her guests on “Church Chat” included the Kardashian sisters (played by Vanessa Bayer, Abby Elliott, Nasim Persad) and Snooki (Bobby Moynihan) from "Jersey Shore."

The Church Lady fawned over her last guest, teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, which earned a warning from the voice of Jesus to refrain herself. Both she and Bieber ended the segment by doing the classic Superior dance.

Ever the master impressionist, Carvey played Mickey Rooney on VH1’s “Celebrity Teen Crisis Center,” that gave out-of-touch advice to teens in trouble on the phone. Carvey also parodied Regis Philbin in a sketch that featured a visit by a singing Kathie Lee Gifford (Kristen Wiig). Carvey was also one of the members of a British synth-pop band that performed at a bar on Super Bowl Sunday, much to the annoyance of the patrons dressed in Green Bay Packers gear.

In his monologue, Carvey spoke about the time he was a cast member on the program from 1986 to 1993. He sang a Broadway-styled musical arguing that his cast was the best in the show’s history. It also featured a guest appearance of another “SNL” alum from that period, Jon Lovitz.

Justin Bieber’s cameo on “SNL” wasn’t only relegated to "Church Chat." He was also featured in a spoof movie trailer for “The Roommate,” playing the normal character to his weird roommate Declan (Andy Samberg).

On Weekend Update, anchor Seth Meyers welcomed Oscar-nominated actor James Franco (Paul Brittain) to talk about his eclectic range of endeavors that included: becoming a rabbi, working at Disneyworld’s Space Mountain, playing a wide receiver in the Super Bowl, and getting a Ph.D. He even briefly read the news on Weekend Update.

The musical guest on the program last night was Linkin Park.

Next week’s guests will be comedian Russell Brand and singer Chris Brown.

Celebs Toss The Pigskin For Their Own Flag Football Super Bowl

Stunning blondes. Handsome hunks. Frumpy outfits.

Actors, actresses, and models traded in designer clothing for blue-and-white T-shirts Saturday for the fifth-annual DIRECTV Celebrity Beach Bowl in Dallas, Texas.

Fierce competitor and “Heroes” alum Hayden Panettiere went all out, ending up covered in sand with “White Collar” star Matt Bomer after a rough-and-tumble down.

Panetierre’s dogged play on the gridiron earned the “Scream 4” star the “Most Inspirational Player” award.

“I won an award – for football!” Panettiere told People. “It has to be because the ball hit me in the face.”

“Entourage” star Jerry Ferrara beat out several former NFL players to snag the “Most Valuable Player” honor.

At the end of the day, Team Spike topped Team Palladia. No word on the score.

The loss did not phase “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” actor Josh Duhamel.

"We lost but this was a lot of fun," he told People. "I'll definitely do this again next year."

Unlike a typical flag football game, there was a luxe afterparty at the nearby W Hotel.

ICC Satisfied with Spot-Fixing Verdict - Lorgat

The ICC is "satisfied" with the verdict and punishments handed out to three Pakistan players on Saturday on charges of spot-fixing during the Lord's Test last summer. A three-member tribunal found Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir guilty of offences under article 2 of the ICC's anti-corruption code and banned them for 10, 7 and 5 years respectively. Haroon Lorgat, the ICC's chief executive, hoped that as a result of the ICC's investigation and the subsequent hearing, the game's image would improve.

In the aftermath of the sanctions, questions were raised over why no life bans were handed out to any of the players, which would've been the maximum sanction for the relevant charges. The ICC's legal team is also believed to have pushed for those.

The tribunal also included the possibility of suspended sentences in the cases of Butt and Asif, of 5 and 2 years respectively, which means they could be out for as few as five years. Considering the ages of a couple of the players - Butt is 26 and Amir just 18 - in theory, they could return after serving their bans, though that remains a considerably distant prospect, especially given that they still have to deal with a criminal case in the UK.

"My first reaction is one of sadness at the fact that we had to go through such an ordeal but I am satisfied we have concluded it," Lorgat said at a press conference in Doha. "I'm also satisfied that the sanctions delivered are severe enough to send out a clear message that the ICC will not stop short at anything to prosecute any player found wanting in this area of corruption. I don't believe the sentences are lenient by any stretch of the imagination."

Lorgat added that he thought the sentences "will make it extremely difficult for them to return to the Test format. It is at the prime of their careers that they are faced with punishment. I don't want to speculate what may happen in future."

The tribunal's statement raised a couple of questions - answers to which will no doubt come if and when the full judgment appears. The recommendation to the ICC of a change in certain aspects of the code and sanctions left Amir and Butt - as seen in the statement of their lawyers - feeling that they could have received lower punishments than they did had the code allowed it. The implication, Amir's lawyer Shahid Karim felt, was a change to that code might benefit Amir.

But Lorgat said the ICC wasn't bound to the recommendation to change, only to consider it. "We would be open-minded to all recommendations put forward. This particular code was substantially rewritten and came into effect in October 2009. This is the first instance we have of provisionally suspending players and working through a case so whatever learnings come out of it we will consider. As far as I understand, it is not binding from a legal perspective."

The other broad concern has been the programme of education prescribed to Butt and Asif has been left under the auspices of the PCB, an administration that has only recently been given warnings by the ICC to put its house in order. But the emergence of the ICC's Pakistan task team (PTT), believes Lorgat, should help matters. "The PCB has made remarkable strides in the last few months in supporting the zero tolerance approach we espouse. We will do everything possible to support them, working together with them through the PTT."

The ICC's role in the investigation, Lorgat said, proved their seriousness in protecting the game's integrity. "It's a fact that this is a kind of incident we don't want to see in the game, but equally, with the speed with which we have got to this point, the hope is that people realised we are serious about maintaining our integrity and we will do everything to protect that. I hope as a result of what has transpired yesterday the image of the game has improved."

White Desires Further Improvement after England Thrashing

Cameron White insisted Australia will have to improve further if they are to challenge for a fourth consecutive World Cup title despite completing a 6-1 drubbing over England. A comfortable 57-run win at Perth concluded the emphatic scoreline and sets the team up nicely for the challenge ahead even though fitness worries remain over key players.

White was leading the team in the absence of Michael Clarke who was rested along with Shane Watson, but Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey are still not confirmed as heading to the World Cup. There are not too many concerns about Ponting after he returned to the nets, but Hussey is cutting it fine as he recovers from his serious hamstring injury.

However, their absences have not been too keenly felt in this series as Watson continued his impressive season, David Hussey slotted in well to the middle order, Shaun Marsh made a hundred, and Adam Voges hit a career-best 80 in his one appearance. White, though, believes the side needs to reach a higher standard.

"It's good to go in winning rather than losing, clearly, but I still think there's a bit of improvement left," he said. "It's been pretty good, very good really, I just think there's still another level we can take it to and we'll probably need to at the World Cup. I think we can do better. Whether that's just bowling better balls, taking more wickets or not being 4 for 100 like we were today. We haven't quite nailed it but have been playing quite well."

In stark contrast to the Ashes, the players who have come into the one-day side have been far more ready to perform at international standard. Although some inexperienced cricketers were included, such as Voges, Jason Krejza and Xavier Doherty, key performances have come from players with a decent amount of knowledge at the top level.

David Hussey showed that value at Perth as he struck a run-a-ball 60 in a 95-run stand with Voges which steadied Australia from a tricky 4 for 103. Hussey, 33, was recalled to the one-day side after a 17-month absence for this series, then included in the World Cup squad and his second coming looks like being more successful.

"The one thing is every time he bats for Australia he looks more comfortable and looks like he belongs there," White said. "We actually said it in the changing room when he was batting today, that he looks like he really belongs. To have that sort player, who is so good against spin bowling, it's a good thing for the team."

Voges, another to take his chance, was thrilled to have performed well on home soil but knows it may be a while until he gets to pull on the international colours again. "It is out of my hands now," he said. "I'll just enjoy tonight, enjoy the moment and whatever happens down the track so be it. I've got a Shield game to get ready for in four days' time, so that's my focus."

One player who didn't appear in Perth was Brett Lee after he was also rested and there were rumours of an injury to the strike bowler but White was having none of it. "He was 100% rested today, he's not injured." Any problem for Lee would be a major blow to Australia's World Cup hopes, but if he fires as he has in the last three weeks they have a good chance.

The board is set to decide on the eight new teams that will take part in next summer's expanded Big Bash League, a tournament that won't include the traditional state sides.

But the more weighty issue is the review, which will look at the wider picture of Australian cricket in the wake of the Ashes disaster, which included three innings losses to England. The review is likely to be headed by someone independent from Cricket Australia, with all aspects of the organisation and the Australian cricket scene set to be examined.

"The view is that it shouldn't just be looking at the players that played the Test series, it should be looking at everything that contributes to the performance," Cricket Australia's spokesman Peter Young told ESPNcricinfo. "So, that's right across Australian cricket, right across all the states, from the point where emerging talent is identified through the nurturing of that talent, the eventual selection of that talent and the management of that talent while it is part of the elite process.

"The feeling is that's not something you can do in 24 hours or two weeks, it's going to take time. The objective is to understand what we need to understand to ensure we're in a winning position when we next play the Ashes and when we host the 2015 World Cup."

But while Australia's long-term future in the traditional format is up for discussion, the more immediate decisions will surround the shortest version of the game. The so-called Big Bash League will kick off next season, with city-based teams in all the state capitals, while two new expansion sides will also be included in New South Wales and Victoria.

Three Victorian venues have put up bids to host the two Victorian teams - Geelong's Skilled Stadium, Etihad Stadium (Docklands) and the MCG - and there are four bids from New South Wales, at the SCG, ANZ Stadium, Kogarah Oval and the Sydney Showgrounds. It's less than a year until the competition will begin, and the board is set to decide on which teams will contest the inaugural tournament.

"The concept is that as this league grows it will be more like an AFL or NRL competition and less like a competition representing states," Young said. "The recommendation tomorrow will be on the initial eight teams. There is a possibility that we will move to a greater number than eight in the near future, but the launching pad for the Big Bash League will be eight teams."

However, what won't be decided this week is how the players will be allocated to the new sides. Cricket Australia is keen to see all the teams begin on an even footing, which means that players' existing state affiliations will have to be ignored, and the merits of a national draft will be weighed up against the possibility of free agency, which is favoured by the Australian Cricketers' Association.

"There have been some observations about, say, a Perth player doesn't want to end up playing for Brisbane because it's a long way from home," Young said. "There's also been an observation that all the players will be travelling for that short period of the competition, and it doesn't matter where they live. We don't yet have a recommendation on that and the board won't be making that decision tomorrow."

Life of `Wild Bill' Donovan Told in New Bio

"Wild Bill Donovan: The Spymaster Who Created the OSS and Modern American Espionage" (Free Press, $30), by Douglas Waller: The burgeoning size and scope of America's intelligence-gatheri ng efforts during and after the Cold War mask the harsh reality that the nation's capacity for clandestine warfare at the outset of World War II was virtually nonexistent.

Thus it was essential for President Franklin Roosevelt to select a go-getter with the skills, background and drive needed to organize a new intelligence agency and whip it into shape to confront the Axis threat.

The man FDR selected to head the Office of Strategic Services, William "Wild Bill" Donovan, was a larger-than-life figure whose career has the makings of a Hollywood screenplay. A Medal of Honor winner during World War I who went on to become a millionaire Wall Street lawyer and an unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor of New York, Donovan displayed a thirst for action more akin to an infantry commander than a spymaster.

Before accepting the intelligence assignment, he expressed a preference to lead an Army division in combat. During the course of the war he placed himself in harm's way whenever he had the chance; he took part in the landings in Sicily and Anzio, waded ashore with Gen. Douglas MacArthur at Hollandia in New Guinea, flew in a two-seater aircraft behind enemy lines in Burma, and defied Army orders by landing on D-Day at Utah Beach, where he quickly found himself under enemy machine-gun fire.

His reckless behavior also permeated his private life, in which his extramarital affairs were such common knowledge that agents stationed abroad were aware of his desire for female companionship during his foreign stops. Donovan was almost a stranger to his shy, sensitive wife, Ruth, who came from a wealthy Protestant family that contrasted with his poor Irish-Catholic background.

Donovan's penchant for collecting secrets took root as he traveled to Europe during the 1930s in search of business for his law firm, met with the likes of Winston Churchill and Benito Mussolini, and realized that the U.S. must enhance its intelligence capabilities to wage the war he believed was inevitable.

Although Donovan was never part of the president's war council, Waller characterizes him as "Roosevelt's idea man, his secret daredevil, his spark plug for thinking outside the box." In this fast-paced, entertaining and engrossing biography, the author delivers a portrait of a hard-driving, Type A extrovert willing to take on political enemies such as the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover while recruiting and directing a spy network that targeted Nazi Germany and its occupied territories. Angry when President Harry Truman disbanded the OSS after the war, Donovan saw a new Central Intelligence Agency emerge a few years later but never headed the agency he had pushed so hard to create.

Waller, whose previous books include a biography of Gen. Billy Mitchell and an account of life aboard a Trident nuclear submarine, comes through with a well-calibrated assessment of Donovan and the impact of the OSS on the war.

"Even his critics — and they argue over his legacy to this day — concede that his OSS was the Petri dish for the spies who later ran the CIA," Waller writes. "The daring, the risk taking, the unconventional thinking, the elan and esprit de corps of the OSS would permeate the new agency."

The book is replete with fascinating anecdotes and tales of derring-do that offer the stuff of espionage thrillers combined with political chicanery and historical fact. There are code-stealing burglaries at the Vichy French and Spanish embassies in Washington that fueled the rivalry between Donovan and Hoover, paratroop drops in Hungary in an attempt to peel that satellite from the Nazis, and Donovan's involvement in plots to topple Adolf Hitler, whom he had long regarded as evil incarnate.

Well before Germany's surrender, Donovan began to build a spy network targeting the Soviet Union. Soon after Hiroshima, he predicted that Russia would have an atomic weapon before long and cautioned that "America has won a war but not a peace."

A hawkish conservative during the postwar years, Donovan hoped to head the CIA under Dwight Eisenhower's administration but saw the post go to Allen Dulles, who had been Donovan's wartime station chief in Bern, Switzerland. Instead, Donovan became ambassador to Bangkok, where his mission of stemming communist advances in Southeast Asia landed him in the emerging troubles of what would, a decade or so later, become America's all-consuming quagmire, Vietnam.

Isaac Newton and the men who made the modern world

"The Clockwork Universe: Isaac Newton, the Royal Society, and the Birth of the Modern World" (Harper, $27.99), by Edward Dolnick: In Europe of the 1600s, Edward Dolnick tells us, the average life expectancy was 30. Disease was so rampant that in London, deaths outnumbered births. Belief in the supernatural was commonplace, even among the intelligentsia. One leading scientist believed the best treatment for cataracts was blowing dried human feces into a patient's eyes.

Amid such superstition, a small band of scientists — mostly mathematicians and astronomers — set out to decode the workings of the universe. Deeply religious themselves, they undertook their investigations to prove that God had indeed created a perfect, orderly world — the "clockwork universe" of Dolnick's title.

Yet when these men — Galileo, Kepler, Descartes, Leibniz and most important, Isaac Newton — discovered and described the forces that kept the Earth, the moons and all the planets spinning in their orbits, they inadvertently undermined belief in an all-powerful creator. They made God irrelevant by elevating science and technology, and in doing so, ushered in the modern era.

Dolnick, a former science writer at The Boston Globe, tells this story in short, punchy chapters, using simple language to explain complex ideas in math and physics. He diligently describes conditions at the time — life was nasty, brutish and short, to quote the 17th-century great Thomas Hobbes — to establish what a revolution in thought was under way.

For this reason, the first couple hundred pages of "The Clockwork Universe" feel like an extended introduction, albeit with entertaining digressions about colorful personalities like the diarist Samuel Pepys and satirist Jonathan Swift.

We also learn a great deal about the Royal Society, founded in London in 1660 to promote scientific inquiry, and whose members conducted experiments we would today consider insane (sheep-to-man blood transfusions) or deeply disturbing (dissections of live dogs).

Dolnick's history begins to soar toward the end, when he focuses on Newton and his masterpiece "Principia." In that 500-page work, which he wrote in less than two years, Newton declares his intention to "demonstrate the frame of the System of the World" and proceeds to do so, explicating everything from the motion of the planets, moon and tides to the path of comets and shape of the Earth.

Subramanyan Chandrasekhar, a Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist who has studied the "Principia" in depth, tells Dolnick that normal scientists can imagine the discoveries of great scientists, even if they were too "stupid" to have thought of them first. "But I don't think it's possible for any scientist to imagine what it would have been like to be Newton," he says.

After reading Dolnick's book, you may find yourself going in a straight line at a steady speed — part of Newton's first law of motion — to pick up a biography of the great man himself.
