Jane Velez-Mitchell, the host of HLN's 'Issues,' argues in her new book that Americans are being lured into addiction and getting hooked on everything from prescription meds, to fast food and reality television. Jane wants to tackle cultural addictions and promises to shine a light on the villains that would profit off our misery.
She tells me that in 'Addict Nation,' "I've got a blueprint for change, but first we must see what is really going on."
In a particularly interesting section, Jane devotes a whole chapter on the hot-button issue of overpopulation in the world. The "out" lesbian, animal protection advocate, vegan and recovering alcoholic with over 15 years of sobriety, wonders boldly if homosexuality is nature's way of "providing balance" and encourages the adoption of the parentless.
"Overpopulation is a problem that is guaranteed to threaten the human species (not to mention all the other species we're taking down with us). Nature invariably comes up with solutions to problems that spring up in the environment. It's called 'carrying capacity' in the animal kingdom. The carrying capacity of a species is the number of individuals the environment can sustain. This is Mother Nature in her most efficient form. If the population gets to be too much, nature has a bag of tricks to help control things. It is interesting that the world's gay rights movement is surging at the very moment in history when our global population is soaring. Is nature providing balance by offering an alternative for coupling that precludes procreation in its traditional form and even encourages adoption of the parentless?"
"Much of the human suffering today is caused by the fact that we simply have too many human beings being born into a world that doesn't want them and can't even feed them," Jane tells me. "One child dies every 5 seconds as a result of hunger. Because of our consumer lifestyle, environmentalists estimate having one child in the U.S. is equal, in terms of the impact on the environment, to having about 40 kids in a developing country."

Plot:
Rango is an upcoming computer-animated comedy film, directed by Gore Verbinski. It features the voices of actors Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Bill Nighy, and Abigail Breslin. It is currently in production by special effects company Industrial Light & Magic, marking the first time the company undertakes making a full length animated feature in 35 years.

In the film, Rango is a pet chameleon who lives in a terrarium. He has long thought himself a hero, but then finds himself removed from his contemporary American southwest surroundings and ending up in an Old West town called Dirt, which is populated by various desert critters garbed like characters out of a spaghetti western. As he’s always thought himself a hero, Rango establishes himself as the lawman, strolling the streets as a sheriff like character.Unknown to him, the “good guy” role doesn’t do very well in Dirt -- with a whole cemetery filled with good guy tombstones. But that doesn’t stop Rango from trying, constantly seeking to fit in, with his surroundings, no matter how challenging -- just like a good chameleon! At a certain point in the narrative, Rango will come to question everything about himself.

Maria Schneider, Star of 'Last Tango in Paris,' Dies Following Illness
Maria Schneider, who at age 19 starred opposite Marlon Brando in Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial 'Last Tango in Paris,' passed away in France after a battle with cancer.
The 58-year-old actress, who played Brando's soon-to-be-married lover, Jeanne, in the 1972 film, was living in Paris at the time of her death, PEOPLE reports.
Although it was her most recognizable role, Schneider said that she struggled with the part both during and after the film's production. "I was too young to know better. Marlon later said that he felt manipulated, and he was Marlon Brando, so you can imagine how I felt," she told the Daily Mail. "People thought I was like the girl in the movie, but that wasn't me."
Schneider, who was nearly three decades younger than Brando at the time 'Tango' was filmed, maintained a relatively low profile in the years following the film's release.
In the years after her most famous performance, Schneider starred opposite Jack Nicholson in 'The Passenger,' but otherwise led a simple life and shied away from the limelight.
"I don't own anything," she told Roger Ebert. "I don't have any maids or answering services or those things. I spend my money on food and travel and cameras ... None of my friends are actors or directors or Hollywood types. I'm not interested in that crowd."

Michael Lohan: Lindsay Didn't Steal, She Got the Necklace on Consignment
Lindsay Lohan's latest scandal revolves around a $2,500 necklace that she was seen taking from a high-end jewelry story near her Venice Beach home, and although she could face charges of grand theft, her father calls it one big "ridiculous" misunderstanding.
"When Lindsay wants jewlery, she askes me and I buy it. And if I think it's too pricey, she buys it," he tells me. "She gets so much on consignment and that's exactly what happened here."
Michael isn't buying reports that the jeweler and the police worked together for weeks to craft a sting operation in order to catch the 'Mean Girls' star wearing a $2,500 necklace.
"If she took something, it would have been addressed at the end of that business day."
According to RadarOnline.com, a police report was filed the day of the incident, and that authorities purporsely waited until she was photographed wearing the necklace.
A friend of the actress turned the necklace in to the Pacific Division of the LAPD Tuesday night.
Kamofie & Co. reported the necklace stolen on Jan. 22, roughly three weeks after the actress was released from three months of court-ordered rehab at the Betty Ford Center.

In One Year, Ben Rappaport Goes From Kay Jeweler Guy to 'Outsourced' Star
Just one year ago, actor Ben Rappaport was working as a waiter at catered events and going on auditions. Now, he's starring as Todd Dempsey on the hilarious new sitcom 'Outsourced.' The genial Juilliard grad had a few plays and a Kay Jewelers commercial under his belt before nabbing the lead in the latest much-buzzed-about addition to NBC's famed Thursday night lineup.
The 24-year-old actor talked to PopEater about his pre-'Outsourced' job selling water during Broadway shows, his misspelled ID badge/good luck charm and his hopes to get his singer-actress girlfriend a job on 'Glee.'
You were at Juilliard two years ago, and now you have the lead in a sitcom. Your classmates must be consumed with jealousy.
Nah, in terms of the business, we have a very strong class. A lot of my classmates are doing very well. A buddy of mine is just wrapping up a long stint on 'All My Children.' Another classmate, Monica Raymond, is on 'Lie to Me.' It's a nice support group.
Just a year ago you were probably best known for a Kay Jewelers commercial. Do tell.
In the ad, my girlfriend was deaf and we'd just started dating and my character was bad at sign language. I did two versions. In one I gave her a watch, and in another some earrings. And yes, I sucked at signing.
What other jobs did you have?
I walked up and down the aisles at 'Mamma Mia' selling bottles of water and candy. One time I was working and this older drunk guy turned to me and said, "So are you working your way through college?" And I said, "No, actually I just got out of college," and he said, "Oh, was this your major?" Total jerk. I said, "Yeah, my major was concession management."
Don't you wish you had his number to call him?
I hope some day he turns on the TV and goes, "Hey, that guy looks familiar."
Have you had friends asking to be extras?
Every once in a while, but really it's my family. Like my uncle tells me,''I'll be your gardener," and I'm like, "I don't need a gardener in my one bedroom apartment." But random people from high school have contacted me on Facebook, [saying], "Hey remember me from science class?" It's kind of like, why didn't you e-mail me last year, what's the difference now?
Can you believe you're on a lineup with Tina Fey and Steve Carrell?
It's crazy. I'm not just saying this because I'm on the lineup, but before all of this, the main TV I watched was the Thursday night lineup. So when I got this show and it got picked up and put in that lineup with '30 Rock' and 'The Office,' it was a crazy full circle kind of thing.
Is there an NBC rep standing next to you with a gun to your head right now?
(Laughs) No, I'm in my dressing room at lunchtime.
The first day you started work, did you show your ID a lot to prove you worked at NBC?
Yeah. The funny thing is, they printed my ID badge a couple of days before I started work, and it was misspelled as Ben Pappaport instead of Rappaport. So I went up to this security guard to get it changed and it was this wise old man who had been on the lot for many years. He starts doing it and in the middle he stops and says, "Are you sure you want me to change this back?" I said, "Yeah, why?" He told me that I might be cursing the show if I do that. A lot of people consider it a good luck charm if they have a typo on their badge. So I said, "You know what? Don't do it." So I'm Ben Pappaport of 'Outsourced.'
Hope your checks aren't made out to Ben Pappaport.
(Laughs) No, no, no, it's just the ID badge.
Have you learned about Indian culture doing the show?
Yeah, the whole show is basically my character learning about Indian culture. I've learned, for instance, that personal space is something we Americans take for granted, and I've learned about different holidays and stuff like that.
Do you like Indian food?
I love Indian food. I love spicy food. If I can sweat and eat at the same time I feel like I'm killing two birds with one stone.
So, Mr. Ben Pappaport, are you single or taken?
I actually have a girlfriend. She's in New York, but we go back and forth. She's a musical theater actress. She's trying to get into Broadway and musicals -- not a lot of that out here in LA.
You should be talking to Ryan Murphy ('Glee') to get her a job.
That would be amazing. Hey, Ryan Murphy!

More American Journalists Attacked as Egyptian Violence Intensifies
As the violence between protesters supporting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and those calling for the president's immediate removal from office continues to escalate in Egypt, several well-known journalists have come under attack. CNN's Anderson Cooper was punched in the face repeatedly by a pro-Mubarak mob, and now CBS's Katie Couric and ABC's Christiane Amanpour have also had frightening run-ins with angry protesters.
"They have really taken it out on the press, they're blaming the press, those pro-Mubarak supporters, for all their woes," Amanpour told ABC News' Diane Sawyer. "And they were very menacing, they told us not to go in when we tried to go in this afternoon or take our destiny into our own hands, they warned."
According to The New York Times, foreign journalists and human rights workers on the ground are being detained by Egyptian security forces and intimidated by protesters in an effort to limit reports on the increasing violence. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs Philip J. Crowley has spoken out on the issue, condemning the attacks on reporters. "There is a concerted campaign to intimidate international journalists in Cairo and interfere with their reporting," he wrote on Twitter. "We condemn such actions."
The Washington Post is reporting that its Cairo Bureau Chief Leila Fadel and a photographer, Linda Davidson, were the among two dozen journalists arrested Thursday morning by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. "We understand that they are safe but in custody and we have made urgent protests to Egyptian authorities in Cairo and Washington," the paper reports. Amnesty International is saying one of its representatives, as well as delegate from Human Rights Watch, was detained by police after the Hisham Mubarak Law Centre in Cairo was taken over by military police.
Amanpour found herself in a scary situation in Cairo when a group of protesters she was attempting to interview turned on her, instigating a confrontation that saw the esteemed journalist flee while the group chanted, "You are not with us."
"You want us to go?" Amanpour asked.
"Yes, I want you to go from here," one protester said. When Amanpour asked why, the man said, "Because we hate you. We hate America ... You are not a good person."
"We left that angry crowd and got into our car, they forced us into our car," Amanpour said. "And as we started to drive off, they hit the car with their fists over and over again and threw a rock through the front window. The glass is shattered all over our driver."
Couric managed to escape a similarly escalating situation before she or her crew were injured. As CBS News cameras rolled, shouting protesters began to surround the clearly unnerved anchor as she walked down a Cairo street.
Yesterday it was reported that Cooper "witnessed a huge crowd of Mubarak supporters surge across a no-man's land dividing them from the anti-Mubarak crowd and overturn a military vehicle on the street as a huge roar went up. A large cloud of smoke arose at the east entrance to Tahrir Square," CNN wrote. "Military vehicles were separating pro- and anti-Mubarak demonstrators, and several gasoline bombs had been tossed."
The anchor and his crew were physically assaulted by pro-Mubarak demonstrators. No major injuries were reported, and the anchor spoke to CNN's 'American Morning' early Wednesday about the attack. "My team were set upon by the crowd," Cooper said via satellite from a Cairo hotel. "There was no rhyme or reason to it -- it was just people looking for a fight, looking to make a point and punching us."
The Egyptian state news agency has asked all foreign press to evacuate hotels near Tahrir Square, the center of the violence in Cairo. Cooper is reportedly holed up in a hotel near the Square and is refusing CNN's request to leave Cairo as the network is unable to guarantee his security in the rapidly deteriorating situation.
Hadeel Al-Shalchi, correspondent for the Associated Press, issued an ominous message on Twitter today to journalists in Egypt, noting that they are targets, after a Greek journalist was stabbed with a screwdriver.
"The Egyptian government is employing a strategy of eliminating witnesses to their actions" in a "series of deliberate attacks on journalists," Mohamed Abdel Dayem of the Committee to Protect Journalists said Wednesday (via NY Times).
Major anti-government protests began in Egypt on Jan. 25 -- the "Day of Anger," also National Police Day -- and have escalated in size and violence since. Millions have turned out to demand President Mubarak and his regime's immediate removal from office amid allegations of abuse of power and corruption within his administration. More recently, however, supporters of the president have turned out to stage counter protests, resulting in extreme violence, with the two sides attacking each other with stones, bottles and Molotov cocktails (a generic name for a fire bomb).

Rapper Juelz Santana Arrested With Drugs and Guns
Def Jam rapper Juelz Santana was arrested in New Jersey on Tuesday when police found him in possession of marijuana and guns.
During a raid of the rapper's Bergenfield recording studio, police found "two fully-loaded 9mm handguns and 17 bags of suspected marijuana," Gawker reports.
According to Bergen County prosecutor John L. Molinelli, this is far from Santana's first brush with the law, citing previous arrests for weapons, drugs and making death threats against his girlfriend. The raid on the rapper's recording studio was only part of a 10-month investigation into suspected drug dealing and gang activities in the area.
Molinelli noted Santana's alleged affiliation with the Bloods, alluded to in a number of the rapper's songs, including titles like 'Red Bandana.'
"These guys are the real deal," he said.
Santana, whose real name is Laron James, made it big in the early 2000s with his song 'There It Go (The Whistle Song)' and appearances on his former Diplomats co-star Cam'ron's tracks 'Hey Ma' and 'Oh Boy.'
"I don't like to advertise the fact that he's a rapper, because some of these guys will use the arrest to increase their record sales," Molinelli told The Record. "To me, he's just a criminal."
Santana is being held at Hackensack's Bergen County Jail until his $125,000 bail is posted.

Megan Fox: 'I Look Like Steve Buscemi'
Megan Fox claims she has a famous Hollywood look-alike, and this time, her doppelganger is about as far from Angelina Jolie as you can get.
The beautiful brunette recently posted an album of baby photos on her Facebook page, unsubtly titling the set, "I Look Like Steve Buscemi."
The photos show Fox as an adorable toddler sporting some stylish overalls, teddy bear sweaters and of course, her famous full lips and thick eyebrow(s).
Despite the actress' good looks, she admitted to Allure, "I remember having that unibrow, which I always hated. I used to beg my mother to let me pluck my eyebrows."
Fox, who married longtime love Brian Austin Green in 2010, may have been replaced by Victoria's
Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in the upcoming 'Transformers' movie, but the actress' schedule is anything but empty.
Fox recently posed for racy new campaigns for Armani jeans and underwear with tennis player Rafael Nadal, and has begun preproduction on the film version of popular comic 'Fathom,' which her husband will co-produce.

Anderson Cooper Refuses to Leave Egypt After Attack
After Anderson Cooper and his camera crew were set upon by supporters of President Mubarak in Cairo on Wednesday, his bosses at CNN urged him to leave immediately as they no longer could guarantee his security. But Anderson has told them "no way" -- this was the biggest story on the planet, and he wasn't going to miss reporting on it.
"What people [may forget] about Anderson is that he is a real reporter. Some dismiss him as a pretty face and nothing else, but that isn't the case. He's the real deal," a network insider tells me. "Anderson's passion is for news. When a story breaks his first instinct is to jump on a plane with a camera and to document the real story. Other network hosts talk the talk from their luxury studios, but Anderson is on the ground."
All this comes one day after CNN's Steve Brusk tweeted that Anderson was punched in the head 10 times while trying to find a neutral zone between the two fighting groups gathered in the streets.
Footage of the debacle was aired by the network later in the day, and it showed a level of chaos that would frighten even the hardiest of journalists.
"We were set upon by pro-Mubarak supporters punching us in the head," Cooper said on 'American Morning' following the attack. "The crowd kept growing, kept throwing punches, kicks ... suddenly a young man would look at you and punch you in the face."
And although no one was seriously hurt, CNN wanted the face of its network back reporting from New York. "Anderson said no way. I'm staying as long as this incredible story lasts," a friend of Cooper's tells me.
It's not just Anderson who is having scary confrontations in Cairo during this historic uprising. CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric was surrounded by protesters as well, although she was not touched. Christiane Amanpour has also had a brush with yelling protesters.

Director: It's 'All Britney' in Upcoming Music Video
Stories have been swirling this week that Britney Spears used a "dance double" in her upcoming music video for 'Hold It Against Me,' but her rep and the video's director have finally put the rumor mill to rest, according to E! News.
"The accusations could not be further from the truth," her rep said. "Britney worked extremely hard on this video and rehearsed for six weeks prior to shooting. Fans will immediately see how inaccurate these claims are once they see the video."
The music video's director, Jonas Akerlund, was reportedly unhappy with Spears' performance and claimed she couldn't keep up with the choreography. He released a statement to TMZ, however, to debunk those rumors.
"She's been great throughout the entire process," he said, continuing, "I've been around long enough to know when an artist gives it their all, and to me it doesn't get better than this ... This video is gonna be f***ing awesome. It's all Britney."
A screenshot of the video was released last week, featuring Spears surrounded by a ring of microphones. The singer's latest album, Femme Fatale, is set to be released on March 15.
"I've poured my heart and soul into this album over the last 2 years," she wrote on Twitter. "I've put everything I have into it. This album is for you, my fans, who have always supported me and have stuck by me every step of the way! I love you all!"
She continued, "Sexy and Strong. Dangerous yet mysterious. Cool yet confident!"
No word on the release date for the 'Hold It Against Me' music video.

David Blaine and Fiancee Hitch a Ride on Snow Plow to Deliver Their New Baby
Magician David Blaine and his pregnant fiancee, French model Alizee Guinochet, had to hitch a ride on a snow plow after Guinochet went into labor last Wednesday, when transport and other services in New York were crippled due to a severe snow storm.
The New York Post is reporting that when Guinochet, 24, went into labor, Blaine, 37, tried to find a taxi in vain. A source is quoted saying, "The doorman and people on the street tried to help him flag down a taxi. But there were absolutely no cars on the road."
The source also said that an increasingly agitated Blaine then tried to call several car services, but even after pleading of his dire situation, no services were available due to the storm.
Relief finally came in the form of a snow plow, which Blaine flagged down, and the driver gave the couple a ride to the hospital.
Guinochet gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The brand new parents are not yet revealing the name of the child, but a rep of the couple said that, "Mom and baby are doing fine."
The new baby girl is the first child for both Blaine and Guinochet.
Blaine and Guinochet got engaged in 2009 after dating for less than a year. And a source was quoted saying that, "they could not be more in love."

Kate Moss is Engaged to Rocker Boyfriend Jamie Hince
Supermodel Kate Moss is engaged to her boyfriend of over three years, 'The Kills' guitarist Jamie Hince.
The Sun reports that Hince, 40, proposed to Moss, 37, on Tuesday night in bed, with an expensive vintage 1920s engagement ring. Hince even went the traditional way of asking Moss' parents permission before he popped the question.
The couple intend to marry on July 2, with Moss' daughter Lila, 8, to be the main bridesmaid, according to reports. Lila's father is Dazed & Confused magazine co-founder Jefferson Hack.
Moss reportedly joked that she would be the most famous Kate to wed in 2011 and not Kate Middleton, who is engaged and set to wed Prince William on April 29.
A source is quoted saying, "Kate is delighted. Jamie is the man for her -- they are soul mates. She just wanted to make him work for her hand in marriage. He has been badgering her to get married, but she wanted to take her time."
The source goes on, "Over the last year they have grown so close, they are like man and wife. They're going to have the mother of all weddings. It will be a huge party, one of the biggest she has ever thrown -- and she's thrown a few."
Last year it was rumored that the couple had married, but the story was proved to be false.
Moss previously dated stars like Johnny Depp and Russell Brand. She was even engaged to troubled rocker Pete Doherty.

Knicks' Walsh Sad, but not Worried about Job Talk
Donnie Walsh doesn't know if he is wanted back by the New York Knicks, and says now is not the time to ask.
With the Knicks on pace for their first playoff appearance since 2004, the team president was embarrassed this week to see a few stories about his future with the team. Specifically, that he may not have one.
There have been no discussions with Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan about the option on his contract for next season. And while that may bother fans who don't want to see Walsh leave, he doesn't seem at all concerned.
"I really haven't given it a lot of thought, all right, because it's not the time to give it thought," Walsh said Thursday after practice. "I do have an option, but it's two months from now, three months from now. I don't think it's the time when I would expect an owner or myself to be even thinking about it. I'm more worried about the trading deadline, I'm more worried about the team, I'm more worried about a lot of things and I really haven't thought about it."
Walsh is in his third season with the Knicks, the one he targeted for the team to be moving forward after two years spent worrying almost entirely about the salary cap. The Knicks are 25-23, sixth in the Eastern Conference, and perhaps even in position to end their franchise-worst streak of nine consecutive losing seasons.
Considering the Knicks finished with only 23 wins twice in the last five seasons, it would seem Walsh has done enough to secure his future in New York. But if he has, nobody has told him.
Walsh said he hasn't spoken in some time to Dolan, but said his boss is honest with him when they do talk and has no reason to believe there is any disappointment in his performance.
"(Dolan) has always been forthright with me and talked to me. I haven't got any problems with him," Walsh said. "As a person I like him, so I don't get all this."
Dolan hasn't taken questions from the media since giving Isiah Thomas, Walsh's predecessor, a contract extension in March 2007. Nor did he comment on Walsh last summer after a report that the president was considering retirement. Dolan's spokesman, Barry Watkins, said MSG does not comment on anyone's contractual situation.
But it became an issue this week in the media, including a Yahoo! Sports column on Wednesday that claims Dolan still talks regularly with Thomas, a Dolan favorite whom he tried to rehire as a consultant last summer. It quoted a source familiar with their conversations as saying that "Isiah knows more about where Donnie stands with Dolan than Donnie knows himself."
"I'm looking for a grassy knoll with some of the stuff I'm reading now," Walsh said. "So the one thing I would like to say is that I don't believe any of it, all right? And for one reason. The one thing I do know about Jim Dolan is he's honest. So I don't believe any of this stuff. I think he'll deal with me honestly and that's what I've always thought."
Coach Mike D'Antoni, who has said Walsh is one of the reasons he came to New York, said Walsh "is great, no doubt about it," but wouldn't get into the contract issue.
"That's something that he'll take care of and management will take care of, and then it'll work its way out," D'Antoni said. "I've got so many other problems. I need to worry about the rebounding and stuff like that."
Walsh wants to return, but he'll turn 70 next month and has battled health problems, so he said his desire is "probably not as important as when I was 40." The longtime executive said he always received fair deals in Indiana once the Pacers became good, and even worked on a handshake deal and took no money in his final year so the team could afford to pay Larry Bird.
Worrying about a contract is not something Walsh does.
"I don't even give it a thought. I've done this for 30 years now and I do the same things the same way I did in the first year. I mean, you come in every day, you work and you try to make the team better. I'm not thinking about what's going to happen in the summer and all that," Walsh said. "I just do whatever I think is good for the interest of the franchise that day."
Walsh made the Knicks respectable and financially responsible again, getting them under the salary cap last season for the first time since the mid-1990s. They missed out on LeBron James but signed All-Star Amare Stoudemire and are considered the favorite to land Carmelo Anthony if he leaves Denver, putting them in position to be competitive for years to come.
A New York native, Walsh wants to see the Knicks back in the playoffs, but isn't sure if that's necessary to ensure his return.
"I really don't know. Nobody's told me that," he said. "You guys are bringing up all these issues. I haven't heard them either from management, Mr. Dolan. Look, I think he wants the franchise to be going in the right direction. I hope it is. If it isn't, then I understand. It's that simple."

Mitch Mustain Avoids Felony Charge
Former USC quarterback Mitch Mustain, arrested Tuesday night in Van Nuys on suspicion of selling prescription narcotics, will not be charged with a felony, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said Thursday.
Mustain was arrested shortly after 8 p.m. PT Tuesday after allegedly selling a substance he passed off as Adderall to an undercover officer. But the substance sold was lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, similar to Adderall but not a controlled substance and thus not punishable as a felony.
He still could have been charged with a felony because he advertised the substance as Adderall, but prosecutors opted to send the case to the Los Angeles City Attorney's office and limit the charges to a possible misdemeanor.
"Given that Mustain has no record, and that this is his first contact with law enforcement, it is appropriate that it be referred to the City Attorney's Office for misdemeanor consideration," officials wrote in a charge evaluation form Thursday.
Mustain could be charged in the case as early as next week, Los Angeles City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan said Thursday. Mateljan said he was unaware of the details of the minimum and maximum punishments for the misdemeanor charge.
Bail in the case was originally set at $30,000 but lowered to $10,000 midway through Wednesday. Mustain spent nearly one full day in the Van Nuys Jail before he was released shortly after 6 p.m. PT Wednesday.
Mustain, 22, was preparing for the upcoming NFL draft and had been on campus at USC to work out in the school's athletic facilities late last week. He started only one game in four seasons at USC, a 20-16 home loss to Notre Dame in November, after transferring from Arkansas in 2007.
The Arkansas native was one of the most sought-after high school players in history.

Flames End Atlanta Jinx, Beat Thrashers
Brendan Morrison figured the Calgary Flames were due for a win in their former home city of Atlanta.
Mikael Backlund scored with about 6 minutes remaining to give Calgary the lead and the streaking Flames finally earned their first win in Atlanta, beating the Thrashers 4-2 on Thursday night.
Morrison, Mark Giordano and Curtis Glencross also scored as the Flames earned their sixth straight win, their longest streak in two years. Glencross scored an empty-net goal with 6 seconds remaining.
The Flames, who played in Atlanta as an expansion franchise from 1972-80, won in Atlanta for the first time in seven games since leaving the South.
"It figured that the law of averages said we were due," Morrison said.
Calgary was winless in six games in Atlanta since the Thrashers joined the league as an expansion team in 1999. The Flames' only point in Atlanta before Thursday night was a 3-3 tie in 2001.
"I guess this was our lucky season," Flames forward Alex Tanguay said.
Bryan Little and Anthony Stewart scored for the struggling Thrashers, who have lost nine of 11 but remained one point ahead of Carolina in the race for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Carolina lost to Toronto 3-0.
Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 22 shots as the Flames moved into a three-way tie with Chicago and Los Angeles for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Flames host to Los Angeles on Saturday.
"We have to keep this going," Giordano said. "There are some big conference games coming up. We're finding ways to win close games.
"We've been a good team all year. We feel like we have a strong team. Now is the perfect time to move up in the standings."
Backlund's go-ahead goal came as he shot through a crowd of players in front of goaltender Ondrej Pavelec in the net after the Thrashers were unable to move the puck out of their zone.
"We had the puck three times and threw it right to them," Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay said.
Niclas Bergfors was one of the Atlanta players who at least briefly controlled the puck before a turnover set up Backlund's go-ahead shot.
"I was trying to chip it out the middle," Bergfors said. "I have to look up and make sure someone is there. ... A brutal play by me."
The Thrashers have been outscored 15-5 in their past four games and have scored more than two goals only once in their past nine games.
"Earlier in the year we were winning those close games and finding a way to get that done and not we're finding a way to make that key turnover," Ramsay said. "But the effort was there. It was a much better effort."
Pavelec, who stopped 20 shots, said the Thrashers "had no luck."
"I don't know what to say," Pavelec said. "We played good. We should have won. ... They got two lucky goals."
Calgary's previous six-game winning streak was Oct. 21-Nov. 1, 2008.
Giordano scored immediately after a Flames' power play for a 1-0 lead early in the first period.
Atlanta opened the second period on the attack, tying the game on Little's goal and taking a 2-1 lead midway through the period when Stewart scored on a pass from Evander Kane on a two-on-one rush.
The Flames had a quick answer on Morrison's goal less than a minute later for a 2-2 tie entering the final period.
Notes: The Thrashers placed D Tobias Enstrom on injured reserve with a finger injury before the game. He had missed three straight games. The move is retroactive to Jan. 22. ... Atlanta F Eric Boulton was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. ... Flames LW Niklas Hagman was held out with an undisclosed injury. ... Play was stopped with 2:46 remaining in the second period after Atlanta D Freddy Meyer collapsed at center ice and said after the game he momentarily lost consciousness. Meyer skated off the ice and did not return.

Brunette Scores Twice in Win over Avalanche
Even on the road, Minnesota's Andrew Brunette and Jose Theodore felt right at home.
It wasn't all that difficult, especially since both players spent parts of three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche.
Brunette scored twice and Theodore stopped 38 shots in his return to goal, helping the Wild hold off a rusty Avalanche squad for a 4-3 win on Thursday night.
Theodore insists there was nothing personal as he went up against his former team. This was more about points with the two teams jockeying for positioning in the standings.
As it stands, the Wild would be in the playoffs and the Avalanche out. But there's still plenty of hockey left.
"We look at the standings like anyone else. We're aware this was a must-win game," said Theodore, whose team won for the sixth time in seven games. "They were a little bit rusty in the first period and that's why we took it to them really quick."
Before the fans even had time to settle into their seats, the Wild were already up 2-0. Kyle Brodziak and Brunette both had goals within the first 61 seconds of the game, putting the Avalanche in catch-up mode the rest of the way.
"It's not anything they did, we just weren't ready to start and it cost us the game," Kevin Porter said. "I thought after that we dominated the play. It was a different game after that. But those two minutes killed us."
Colorado's early sluggishness can be attributed to the fact the team hasn't played in more than a week. The Avs were scheduled to take the ice Tuesday in St. Louis following the All-Star break, but it was postponed due to weather.
Avalanche coach Joe Sacco was hoping to guard against a lethargic start just like this, even putting his team through a rigorous workout the day before.
The plan didn't work.
"Pretty much a nightmare start," said Milan Hejduk, who scored two goals. "Terrible start."
Hejduk provided a late spark by scoring 45 seconds into the final period and drawing the Avs to within a goal at 3-2. They had a shot at tying the game when Martin Havlat was called for a double-minor after his stick caught T.J. Galiardi in the face.
But Theodore was at his best with the Wild down a player, turning back one shot after another.
Pierre-Marc Bouchard then sealed the win midway through the final period when he backhanded a shot past Craig Anderson for his fifth goal of the season.
Theodore was on top of his game as he returned to the net after missing time with a hip injury. He showed no signs of rust in his first game since Jan. 11.
"It's always good to play against your former team," said Theodore, who appeared in 91 games for the Avs in parts of three seasons. "It was a good test and felt really good."
Brunette continued to haunt his former squad, increasing his point total to 26 in 42 games against Colorado.
"We knew we had to step up our game and we were able to do that tonight," said Brunette, who was a member of the Avalanche from 2005 to 2008.
Although Ryan O'Reilly missed his sixth straight game with a shoulder injury, Sacco remained optimistic the forward will be ready soon, possibly even Saturday against Anaheim.
O'Reilly has been out since a scary crash in Minnesota on Jan. 14, sliding into the boards headfirst.
Peter Forsberg participated in the morning skate Thursday as he continues to ponder a comeback. He's been testing his conditioning and the strength of his chronically injured right foot to see if he's even up for a return.
Forsberg had a solid skating session Thursday. This after sounding a little bit discouraged the day before following an intense workout that had him fiddling with his right skate.
The Swedish star hopes to make a decision soon, especially since the Avalanche are heading out on the road next week for a four-game swing.
"I think right now the ball's in his court," Sacco said. "Peter's the only one that's going to be able to tell us really how he feels."
Notes: Avs D Ryan Wilson turned 24 on Thursday. ... Wild D Marco Scandella missed his seventh straight game with a concussion. ... A snowstorm blew through Denver on Thursday, leading to a sparse crowd at Pepsi Center. So sparse, in fact, the voices of the players on the ice reverberated around the arena. ... With Minnesota's win, the season series is tied at 2-2 with two more games to go. ... Wild D Cam Barker was poked in the eye during a fight with Avs F Brandon Yip in the second period. Wild coach Todd Richards wasn't sure if Barker would be available for the game Saturday in Phoenix. ... Brodziak's goal 33 seconds into the game was the fastest against the Avs this season.

Zubrus Helps Lift Devils out of NHL Cellar
The New Jersey Devils no longer have to look up to see every other NHL team.
A gut-wrenching win over the rival New York Rangers on Thursday night pushed the perennial playoff contenders out of the cellar and gave them a glimmer of hope for the final stretch of the season.
But a 14th straight trip to the postseason is still a long shot, at best.
Dainius Zubrus had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who beat the Rangers 3-2 and jumped over Edmonton and the New York Islanders in the overall NHL standings.
New Jersey is 8-1-1 in its past 10 games, but is still 18 points behind eighth-place Atlanta in the Eastern Conference race with 31 games remaining.
"We have to start catching up to teams and bringing them behind us," said Martin Brodeur, who made 25 saves. "It's going to be a long process. Hopefully, we'll keep what's going on now going. It's nice, for now, to not see your name in the 15th spot."
The Rangers are sitting in seventh place and trying to get back into the playoffs after a one-year absence. An 0-2-1 skid has left them with a six-point cushion over ninth-place Carolina.
New York coach John Tortorella laid most of the blame for the losses to Florida, Pittsburgh, and New Jersey on All-Star goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who was pulled Thursday in the second period after he allowed three Devils goals on 12 shots.
"Our goaltending hasn't been there — certainly not at the level it needs to be this time of year," Tortorella said. "These three games we had chances to win. I'm not calling out Hank, but I need to be honest. Our goaltending hasn't been good enough, and we've played some good hockey.
"I think we probably get five out of the six points if it's just decent goaltending."
Lundqvist was victimized by two goals in the Florida game that went in off Rangers forward Artem Anisimov, and he turned aside six straight Pittsburgh players in a seven-round shootout that New York lost 1-0. However, he was quite displeased with his latest performance.
"I'm upset for not playing better. I'm not upset about getting pulled," Lundqvist said. "I feel low on the energy level and need to get going. We need more saves from the goalie."
Zubrus set up Ilya Kovalchuk's goal in the first period and scored along with Brian Rolston in the second to give the Devils a seemingly comfortable 3-0 lead.
Ryan Callahan and Vinny Prospal, in his season debut after recovering from offseason knee surgery, got the Rangers close, but Brodeur hung on for the Devils (18-30-3), who moved one point ahead of Edmonton and tied the Islanders.
"We are confident now in how we're playing, but we're still pretty far down," Rolston said.
The Devils, outshot 27-18, lost the first three meetings this season to New York and were outscored 9-2.
Prospal brought the Rangers within 3-2 by scoring during New York's 5-on-3 power play 2:21 into the third period. New York had a pair of failed power plays after that advantage.
Even with all of that, Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi nearly tied it with 0.8 seconds left, but his shot was deflected off the right post.
"The way we played, we should've scored the third goal way before that," Prospal said.
Kovalchuk connected on New Jersey's first shot to give the Devils the lead 1:04 in. Zubrus set him up for his 300th NHL assist.
The teams combined for only 12 shots in the first period — seven for the Rangers.
Lundqvist faced little action and appeared to be shaky on the few shots that came his way. He was rattled midway through the first when he gloved another hard drive by Kovalchuk that briefly stung his catching hand.
In the second, the Devils continued to show how they are making a second-half surge after one of the worst starts in team history and stretched their lead to 3-0.
Zubrus finished off the next scoring play with a sizzling shot from the high slot that Lundqvist initially stopped. The puck got behind him and trickled tantalizingly toward the goal line. Girardi tried to sweep the puck safely out of the crease, but knocked it in off Lundqvist at 8:01.
New Jersey got more assistance from the Rangers 7:03 later when Mats Zuccarello failed to clear the puck out of the zone. All-Star Patrik Elias sent a soft pass to Rolston, who fired a shot that sailed past Lundqvist.
The Rangers' goalie was left sitting in the crease. When he got up, he was summoned to the bench and replaced by Martin Biron. New York got on the board with Callahan's 12th with 3:35 left in the second.
Callahan has scored in both games since he returned after missing 19 games because of a broken hand.
Notes: Brodeur has played 1,029 complete games, the same number of total appearances Patrick Roy made. ... The Rangers sent C Kris Newbury to Connecticut of the AHL.

Bill Belichick Wins AP Coach of the Year
Bill Belichick is closing in on Don Shula.
The New England Patriots coach won The Associated Press 2010 NFL Coach of the Year award on Wednesday, the third time Belichick has earned the honor. Belichick, who also won in 2003 and 2007, now trails only Don Shula, a four-time winner of the award.
"I accept the award on behalf of the entire organization -- ownership, our assistant coaches and certainly the players -- they're the ones that stepped up and made the plays this year," Belichick said in an NFL Network phone interview. "We had a lot of new people on the team, young players that contributed. It's certainly an honor to receive this award on behalf of our performance in the regular season. Unfortunately, we weren't able to carry that over into the playoffs."
For leading the Patriots to a 14-2 record, the best in the league, Belichick received 30 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. That easily beat Raheem Morris, who led a turnaround in Tampa Bay and got 11½ votes.
Belichick has overseen a transition in New England to a younger team, particularly on defense. Of course, he still has Offensive Player of the Year Tom Brady at quarterback.
"I will say the foundation of the Patriots organization, which starts with [owner Robert Kraft] and Coach Belichick, has not changed since the day I arrived," Brady said. "They have and will always do what is in the best interest of the team, and they will continue to find selfless players that love to work hard, compete and strive to be the best they can possibly be."
Then Belichick makes them even better.
"He really stays on top of us," wide receiver Wes Welker said. "He makes sure that we're not getting overconfident or believing in the noise outside the locker room and understand that every game's tough in the NFL."
Belichick's record with the Patriots is 126-50, plus a 14-5 mark in the postseason, with losses in the last three tries with teams that went a collective 40-8. His career winning percentage of .716 ranks eighth, tied with Hall of Famer Paul Brown, and no other coach has four 14-victory regular seasons.
This might have been Belichick's most impressive work as the Patriots retooled much of the roster, yet had a dominant regular season in which they won their final eight games.
"When you have so many things that go into a team, so many things that go into what's happened over the last decade, which ones do you point to?" he said. "You can make an argument for a lot of different things. In the end, it's each individual team and that collection of players that particular year and that particular time during the season or whatever it is, that was able to go out there and be successful."
Belichick basically rebuilt the defense, particularly the secondary, where rookie Devin McCourty made the Pro Bowl.
He showed confidence in BenJarvus Green-Ellis as his main running back, and Green-Ellis rushed for 1,008 yards. Belichick claimed Danny Woodhead when the Jets cut him, and Woodhead was a dynamic piece of the offense and special teams.
Then there was the Randy Moss case.
Eager to remove the recalcitrant receiver, Belichick stole a third-round draft pick from Minnesota in early October for Moss, who lasted a month with the Vikings, then was cut.
Meanwhile, Belichick traded with Seattle for Deion Branch, the 2005 Super Bowl MVP with the Patriots. Branch had a rebirth in New England, making the Moss deal look even better.
And making the Patriots a better team -- typical of what Belichick has done since getting his second chance to be a head coach. The first was a flop with the Browns, where he went 37-45 in four seasons and alienated nearly everyone in Cleveland.
"When I chose him, people at the league office, people in this town, sent me tapes of him in Cleveland and said, 'You don't want to hire this guy,'" Kraft said. "And, remember, he went 5-11 [in his first year with Patriots] and we gave up a No. 1 draft choice [to the Jets to get him]. People thought we were nuts.
"So I think that probably was one of the best decisions I've made in football."
Belichick is a disciple of Bill Parcells, the only other New England coach to win the award.
The honor came as NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he felt "deceived" by Belichick in the wake of the Spygate scandal in 2007.
Goodell told Sports Illustrated recently that Belichick did not fulfill his obligation to "tell his side of the story" in front of reporters after the league handed down its punishment for illegally videotaping opponents.
Belichick issued only a printed statement apologizing for his actions and refused to answer questions in a subsequent news conference.
"I was given assurances that [Belichick] would tell his side of the story," Goodell told Sports Illustrated. "He went out and stonewalled the press. I feel like I was deceived."
Belichick denied the allegation to Sports Illustrated.
"I did not make any assurances about thoroughly discussing the subject publicly," he told the magazine. "I said I would address it following the league's review. I then did that in a way I thought was appropriate. I don't think that was deceptive."
Morris lifted the Buccaneers from 3-13 in his first season to 10-6 in 2010 and into playoff contention until the final week. He did it with the league's youngest roster.
"We put a lot on his plate," Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said, "and he has absolutely handled it all. We all see where this ship is headed."
Also receiving votes were Kansas City's Todd Haley (4½), whose team went 11-5 and won the AFC West; and four coaches with one selection apiece: Atlanta's Mike Smith, Philadelphia's Andy Reid, Chicago's Lovie Smith, and St. Louis' Steve Spagnuolo.

NFL, Union Disagree on Franchise Tag Assignments
Go ahead and add franchise tags to the lengthy list of issues the NFL and its players disagree about.
The league is telling clubs they can place that designation on players whose contracts are expiring, even if there's no new collective bargaining agreement to replace the one that ends March 3. The union sent a letter to agents Thursday to tell them the NFL is wrong about that.
"Our position is that you can franchise anyone you want, by whatever date you want, but if there is no CBA, the franchise tags will be meaningless," NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith said.
Arguing that the 2011 season does not fall under the current CBA, the union said in a statement that the "NFL has no valid basis for claiming the right to franchise players in 2011."
In response, league spokesman Greg Aiello said via e-mail to The Associated Press: "We are still operating under the current agreement. ... Franchise tags are always made before the start of the next league year. This is consistent with past seasons."
The franchise tag allows each team to prevent one player from becoming an unrestricted free agent by offering him a one-year contract that's worth 120 percent of his salary from the season before or the average of the five highest-paid players at his position, whichever is greater. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is among the players who would be affected this offseason.
The dispute is only one of many between owners and players
"The disagreements that we have are fundamental," Smith said.
The main issues include how to divide about $9 billion in annual revenues; the owners' push to expand the regular season to 18 games; a rookie wage scale; benefits for retired players.
The two sides are scheduled to have their first formal bargaining session since November on Saturday.
"I don't think it's a good idea to set any expectation, other than the fact that we intend to sit down and continue to have a discussion that should guarantee football for our fans, football for our players," Smith said.
NFLPA spokesman George Atallah described Saturday's meeting as "a window of opportunity" and added: "We intend to go in there with open minds and open ears."
Speaking to the media a day before NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's annual pre-Super Bowl news conference, Smith said the two men have "a great relationship."
Smith also repeated what he's been saying for quite some time: The union is convinced that the NFL has been planning since at least 2007 to lock out players this year. The old CBA was agreed to in 2006 and was supposed to last through 2012, but the owners exercised an opt-out clause in 2008.
"I believe that the league has taken steps to effectuate a lockout for a very long time," Smith said. "The players are committed to making sure that does not happen."

James Harrison: Safety Pledge 'a Show'
James Harrison took a few more hard shots at the NFL.
A day after sarcastically suggesting a pillow could be used to soften blows he delivers to opposing players, the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker called the league's talk about wanting to protect players "a show."
Harrison said before Wednesday's practice leading up to Sunday's Super Bowl that the owners' push for an 18-game regular season and the possibility of a lockout prove the NFL is more interested in maximizing revenue than the health of its players.
"It's not about player safety," Harrison said. "It's about them making money."
Among key issues the NFL and union are expected to discuss over the next several weeks include the league's push to extend the regular season from 16 games to 18; a rookie wage scale; benefits for retired players; and the owners wanting players to cede an additional $1 billion of the gross revenues up front.
"I don't think it's a good thing if you're so worried about player safety," Harrison said of an 18-game season, calling it "crazy."
"You don't go and lock your players out and take away the health insurance from people that have wives and kids on the way," he added. "You lock us out and health insurance is gone."
The NFL declined comment on Harrison's remarks.
Steelers owner Dan Rooney recently came out against the idea of an extended season, something Harrison believes will hurt the owners' cause.
"He's the main voice," Harrison said. "He's the most respected voice, I believe. He came out and said it, exactly what it was, what it is. It's about them making money. It's not about us, them talking about player safety. They're doing all this fine stuff. That's a show, something to give the people to look at."
Harrison was fined $100,000 by the NFL for illegal hits this season, and even briefly went so far as to threaten to retire because he said it was too difficult to adjust to the new way rules were being enforced.
"It was a hotheaded decision," he said. "You can sit back and look at it for what it was. And when I sat back, there are some things you can't control and everything happens for a reason. Looking at the fines, I feel most of them were not justified. Seems like they needed somebody to be the poster guy for their rule and I seemed to be the biggest name out there at the time. So, they chose me, I guess."
The league and the players' union face an early March deadline for trying to negotiate a new labor agreement.
"It's no doubt to me," said Harrison, whose Steelers play the Green Bay Packers for the NFL championship Sunday. "I believe they're going to lock us out."
And, Harrison insisted it won't just affect the players and teams.
"I think if they lock us out, they'll lose a lot of fans," he said. "To be honest, it's not going to kill us. It's going to kill those people that rely on that year-in and year-out seasonal income, those bars and restaurants, mom-and-pop shops."
At Tuesday's media day at Cowboys Stadium, Harrison said he feels as if the league was "looking for a poster boy" when it started fining him.
In a deadpan delivery, Harrison said: "I don't want to hurt nobody. I don't want to step on nobody's foot or hurt their toe. I don't want to have no dirt or none of this rubber on this field fly into their eye and make their eye hurt.
"I just want to tackle them softly on the ground and, if y'all can, we'll lay a pillow down where I'm going to tackle them, so they don't hit the ground too hard, Mr. Goodell."
Asked on Wednesday whether he's worried about the dangers of concussions from violent hits on the field, he was defiant, as expected.
"My style of play is how you're supposed to play the game," he said. "It's no more dangerous for me than it is for anybody else. That's part of the risk you take. There's risks with everything you do. You've just got to try and minimize the risk and if something happens, it happens. Everything happens for a reason. Like everything else that you can't control, it's in God's hands. ... Since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, that's how you play the game."
Someone wondered if the league might be trying to eliminate the violent hits Harrison has become known for.
"If you want to get it totally out of the game, put flags on us," he said. "We'll tag off and pull flags off each other and we'll see how popular the game is then and how many people come to watch it."
Speaking of watching, Harrison isn't concerned that officials will be following his every move -- and hard hit.
"If I'm worried about officiating, I'm not going to be able to focus on what I do," he said. "I'll just play the game out and if they make calls that are questionable, it's just something you've got to live with."

Daniel Snyder Sues Local Newspaper
Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has sued Washington City Paper over a column he says defamed him and had anti-Semitic references.
Snyder filed the lawsuit against the weekly paper and its parent company, Atalaya Capital management LP, in New York State Supreme Court on Wednesday. The suit seeks at least $1 million in damages for each of the two causes of action, plus punitive damages.
The cover story entitled "The Crazy Redskins Fan's Guide to Dan Snyder," has an altered photo of the owner with horns and a beard drawn in pen. The suit claims the weekly newspaper used "lies, half-truths, innuendo and anti-Semitic imagery to smear, malign, defame and slander" Snyder.
The suit also says the newspaper reported Snyder engaged in criminal conduct by "forging names."
Telephone calls to the paper Wednesday night were not immediately returned, but publisher Amy Austin, in a letter to readers posted earlier Wednesday said, "We believe we have the facts right."
In a post on the City Paper's website Wednesday, managing editor Mike Madden asserted the image "is meant to resemble the type of scribbling that teenagers everywhere have been using to deface photos for years," he wrote. "The image of Snyder doesn't look like an 'anti-Semitic caricature' -- it looks like a devil."
Snyder will contribute any monetary damages received to groups that assist the homeless, the lawsuit said.

Heat Stars: We're Behind on Chemistry
Even as their principal players return to health, the Miami Heat readily acknowledge that they can't compete with the chemistry established by the Boston Celtics and other formidable rivals.
"We're way behind those guys," LeBron James said following the Heat's practice on Wednesday. "Just look at the number of games played, the number of playoff series those guys have had. We're only a few months in together -- 40-something-plus games. I've seen the statistics. Boston has like 250-plus games played together. We're way behind those teams."
The Heat, who acquired James and Chris Bosh in July to join Dwyane Wade in Miami, have played only 48 games together with that core of stars. In contrast, the Celtics' primary starters, a cast that includes Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo, were assembled in 2007. Other title contenders feature rosters of familiar faces, as well.
"You talk about Boston, you talk about Orlando or the Lakers, we're never going to catch those guys in experience," Dwyane Wade said. "I think the stat is, Boston is 30-15 in the playoffs since they've been together. We're 0-0."
That Celtics starting unit is actually 30-17 during its three playoff runs, but Wade had the Heat's 0-0 record correct.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has stressed all season the importance of developing a common familiarity -- particularly among the Heat's primary scorers -- through meticulous preparation and the repetition that comes with the grind of the NBA season.
"The No. 1 thing is time," Spoelstra said. "We need time on the court. We need to take advantage of practice days like today, shootarounds, because there are some lineups we're playing right now that literally had not played together after 47 games."
The Heat are gradually working swingman Mike Miller into lineups alongside James, Wade and Bosh. The four-man unit played together for the first time on Sunday in Oklahoma City, to positive results. Miller missed the first two months of the season with a thumb injury. With his return, the Heat now have their four most prolific scorers healthy.
"The biggest thing for us, the Miami Heat, is we want to keep everyone healthy," Wade said. "The more time we can get together, whether it's practice sessions, whether it's film sessions, whether it's in a game, is going to be positive for us."

Urban Meyer off Florida's Payroll
Former Florida coach Urban Meyer has severed financial ties with the Gators to avoid NCAA recruiting violations.
Meyer had remained on Florida's payroll since resigning in December. He signed a deal with ESPN earlier this week to become a college football analyst, and his job discussing potential recruits during a national signing day telecast Wednesday would have been an NCAA violation.
So Meyer chose ESPN over his undefined role at Florida.
"The University of Florida has been a big part of my personal and professional life for the past six years, and while I will no longer be able to continue a professional relationship with the University, I will continue to support the many friends I made during my time there," Meyer said in a statement.
Meyer will call one game a week for ESPN during the regular season and also serve as a studio analyst.
When he resigned Dec. 8, the 46-year-old Meyer said he wanted to spend more time with his family. He insisted his new job wouldn't get in the way of that, with minimal commitment during the offseason and travel only over the weekend during the season.
Meyer, who was 104-23 in 10 seasons at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida, said Monday he would maintain an affiliation with the Gators and help athletic director Jeremy Foley with fundraising for the university. Now, though, Meyer won't work in any capacity with the school or the football program.
"We are happy for Coach Meyer that he is getting a chance to stay involved with college football -- he has so much passion for the game and the players," Foley said in a statement. "He will provide great insight and background for ESPN's audiences.
"We were pleased to provide Coach Meyer with an opportunity within our athletic department, but the chance to work for ESPN was a perfect fit for him and his family. He will always be welcome here and we are forever indebted for what he accomplished and how he represented the University of Florida.
"He gave every ounce of energy to this program for six years and we certainly share a special bond with him. We will always remain close friends and I look forward to seeing him enjoy the next chapter in his life. Coach Meyer will always be a Gator."

Maurice Jones-Drew: Jay Cutler gets it
Maurice Jones-Drew won't apologize for his critical tweet of Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, but the Jacksonville Jaguars running back wants to move on from the controversy he and several other players created during the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 23.
"If I did something wrong I would apologize," Jones-Drew said Wednesday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I didn't mean any hard feelings by it. I think [Cutler] understands that as well. I really think that the media took it out of control and got offended by it because players said it before certain media said it."
An injured Cutler left the Bears' 21-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers after he played one series in the second half. The Bears announced the next day that Cutler had sprained his MCL, but Jones-Drew and several other NFL players were critical and questioned his toughness before the extent of the injury was known.
Jones-Drew said he was rooting for Cutler and the Bears, and when Cutler left in the third quarter, Jones-Drew thought it was a good time to make fun of the Florida Gators, whose coach resigned after the season.
"Hey I think the urban meyer rule is effect right now... When the going gets tough........QUIT," Jones-Drew posted on his Twitter page.
Jones-Drew said Wednesday that he wasn't trying to question Cutler's toughness, and he might even send Cutler flowers as a peace offering.
"I'm going to say something like 'Jay, I hope we can still be friends' -- because I knew him before, we came out in the same draft -- 'I hope we can still be friends. No hard feelings. Here's a dozen roses and a teddy bear with a 32 jersey on there,'" Jones-Drew said.
Jones-Drew played all season with a torn meniscus in his left knee, saying there were days he would wake up and not be able to walk. He learned the severity of the injury during training camp -- he basically had bone scraping against bone -- but tried to keep it hidden because he didn't want opponents taking shots at his knee.
Cutler supporters on Twitter responded that Jones-Drew's knee injury kept him out, too.
"My knee injury was totally different than his. That's the problem," Jones-Drew said. "As a player I feel like we should be able to talk about the game. Don't get me wrong, what I said was wrong, and I shouldn't have said it but I did. It was my opinion at the time, and I stated it so I'm not going to back off.
"But our two injuries were totally different. I don't know his pain threshold. I don't know how tough he was, and I did make an opinion without knowing the facts, but a lot of people did as well at the same time."
Jones-Drew said the backlash as a result of his tweet was strong and sometimes extreme. Some wished a catastrophic knee injury on him, and he said he even received death threats.
"I don't think what I did was wrong; I didn't commit a crime," Jones-Drew said. "Some of the stuff I was getting, it was crazy how people were coming at me like I committed a crime or something. I just spoke my mind."
For those who say Jones-Drew is jealous of Cutler and the Bears advancing to the NFC Championship Game, he has no retort.
"I haven't gotten a chance to feel what that's like [to be in a conference championship game]. People can say I'm jealous or envious; I am because I want to be there," Jones-Drew said. "I want to be in that situation where I can be on the field in the NFC Championship Game. I've talked to [Bears running back and good friend] Matt [Forte] about it a lot because it's something I've never done, and I want to be a part of it. I don't think that tweet was out of jealousy or other players' tweets were out of jealousy. It was just players saying how they felt at the time."
